Title: Thinking about trying AH.
Post by: Akira Takasaki on June 23, 2002, 01:01:39 PM
I have been flying Fighter Ace III for the last couple of months. The graphics are great but the game is too arcadish as is the community. I am more of a simmer, I like more realistic scenarios. The most popular server in FA3 is called "Territorial Combat". Basically it is a country free for all. Americans shoot down Brits, Germans try to kill Japanese, etc. There are hardly any squadrons over there that are based on real historic squadrons either. Most have fictional clan sounding names with no country affiliation. In a nutshell, no one cares about the WWII era. To me it is pretty much Quake with wings.

Is AH a sim or another arcade game like FA3? I mostly fly Japanese and want a sim that has somewhat real scenarios, i.e. US vs Japan naval battles, etc. Are there online squadrons that try to portray real WWII squadrons over here?

The sad thing about FA3 is that it has the potential but the community prefers arcade flight models with unrealistic scenarios. The cockpits even disappear when you look in forward view for easy targeting, that is another thing I can't live with.

Would appreciate any feedback, especially from anyone who has flown both FA3 and this one.

The Main Arena is a bit like what you describe wherein any country can fly any plane.

We do have the Combat Theater where historical matchups can be found using historical maps.

Give it a shot. What the hell, it's free for two weeks.:)

It sounds like the Combat Theater is what you are looking for.  It is an arena of historical matchups that change on a weekly basis.  Check out the CT forum.

But the MA is fun for mindless furballing and such.

Also, we have weekly squadron events such as the Tour of Duty.  You don't necessarily need to be in a squad to fly in them.  Just announce yourself in the TOD forum.

Welcome to AH.

Any good Japanese squadrons in this game? I wouldn't mind hooking up with someone to show me the ropes. I went in on my own and was completely lost. I also couldn't find that combat server you all are talking about. I think it took me to the main server.

If you live on U.S. mainland, try and log on late at night which would be prime time in Japan. There's lots of Japanese spoken.

Welcome aboard, Akira.

You'll find information regarding special events at this link -->
http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=56429

There are a number of Japanese squads flying the Main Arena.

Any other questions, fire away. There's a plethora of players always willing to offer help.

"Is AH a sim or another arcade game like FA3?"

Actually, it's both.

The software it's self is a very good WWII simulator.

It's the arena set up that decides how the software is used, and which sets the tone for the game you play. Currently there is:

Main Arena (MA); which is similar to how you describe FA.

Combat Theatre (CT); A less popular area, but with it's own very dedicated inhabitants who seem to want less "game" and more "sim".

Training arena (TA). A cess pit. Avoid it.

Dueling Arena (DA) Rarely used, except for competitions

Special Events Arena (SEA). An arena put aside for purpose designed events. These can be "very real and serious" or complete quake-a-thons, depending on the designer's aims. AH events have had a very slow and shakey start, but they do seem to be improving in both scope, breadth and aplomb. There's still not enough of them, but we're told there's more on the way in "two weeks".

Judging from the tone of your post, you may well find a home in the CT.

There are no "good" Jappanese squads in AH. There are a number of gang-banging, land grabbing horde warrior alt monkeys who write indecipherable gibberish at each other and usually have extremly high scores and kill me regularly, especialy if they're called "Mitsu" or "Flying Dutchman"; but I wouldn't call that "good"; would you?

Take the two weeks. It's free.

Lucky for the entire community that Seeker finally came along and showered us with his boundless knowledge in the ways of scenarios and events. I just don't know where we'd be now without Seeker's invaluable input.

here's to you Seeker ...

Probably still looking for an Axis C.O. I expect. Which I can respect, after all, not every one has the servility required to deal with HTC CM's.

By the way, what ever happened to the free month's subscription you guys were so keen to hand out after Sicily? I mean, I'm a Euro, so I'm rich compared to most AH players and I won't miss it, but a deal's a deal, no?

You seem to be confusing "servility" with "common courtesy". Common courtesy sounds like an easy enough concept, but I'm continually amazed at how so many people fail to grasp it.

As far as the "free month" goes, you'll have to talk to Nash about that.

I believe Oboe is organizing the 27th Sentai for the CT.

Akira if you get a chance check out the TOD.

But don't take anyones word for it. Come check it out yourself.

Yes, thanks Ghosth!

It's true - Anvil has given Lowe and I the green light to reforming the 27th Sentai in AH.   We're just getting things organized right now, but Akira, you sound like the kind of flyer we will be looking for.   We'll be flying a couple nights a week, according to an mid-evening CST schedule.

The next few weeks will be busy for Lowejg and I (Oboe2)
as 1.10 is released and we get acclimated to the new Japanese planes (and some old ones!) and get the squadron website up and running, but if you see us online please contact either of us and we'll get acquainted.    Or email me at tjlaven@attbi.com.

Thanks!

Akira Welcome to Aces High!

There are several good Japanese squadrons in Aces High.  Look for Kanamaru, Yancyan, Hermit, or Flying Dutchman.

I find the Japanese Squadrons to be some of the best in Aces High.  And the members that are in them are good pilots and fine gentlemen.

Take the two week trial period.  I'm sure after you get used to the features of the game you'll fly nothing else.

Good Luck
Hajo

What I like about AH:

Plane models handle very much like in real life compared to most other sims IMO,

There are lots of Historical/strategic things in ah, Combat Theater, Scenarios Tour Of Duty. (I havent tried TOD or any scenarios yet cuz I don't have an account for MA but they sound very nice),

Terrain Editor that lets you create your own maps, I've allways liked making maps/Scenarios for games.,

A VERY large selection of planes, and more being added every month or so, sometime this month patch 1.10 will be out and we get 9-10 new planes!,

Very good Customer Service.

And if you ever drop in the H2H (H2H is free, its basically multiplayer with up to 8 ppl) I usuelly host historical maps I make with realistic setups and night/day.
