Yep, Great movie... And tune too (here's midi) (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/song/das_boot.mid)

What year was that film from?
It was shown on Danish national TV when I was young, but I can't remember for sure how old i was.
A few scenes are still clear in my memory and I think I must have been about 8-10 when I first saw it.
Grinbird, Santa and Danish help me out here, you are all older than me; when was it shown?
As a side not I remember my elder brothers rented "Midway" at about same period. I think my interest for WWII came mainly from those two films.

Das Boot came out 1982 Snefens
I wish they'd put the FULL 3 movies Duckwing mentioned on DVD, the one currently available is the shortened edition that was shown in cinemas with some additional scenes...
But the LONG (6-7 hours total) tv version REALLY rocks.

I'm pretty sure the full 3 films can be bought on video tho Red .. not sure if they put'em on NTSC tho ..

another awesome and probably the best war flick i've seen was called i think "The easternfront".The film followed a group of german thru russian was awesome.

Snefens, I believe I was 12 or 13 when I saw it, and that was 13 years ago or so.
It was first released as a movie back in '81 if I'm not entirely mistaken.
I got a VHS original copy I got cheaply - director's cut.
This film is probably the best film I've ever seen.
The only thing Hollywood has done that comes close would be Aliens (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif). Those marines are sooo cool (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
