Title: What apps must remain running in WinXP?
Post by: Wanker on July 02, 2002, 03:38:02 PM
You know how in Win98, the rule was to close down all apps except for systray and explorer?

Well, what are the required ones that need to remain running for WinXP?

if you get sisoft sandra(sorry I can't remember where I got it, but I know I didn't pay for it) you can run a 'performance tune-up' in the report it will show you which features you are using that you don't need.

then you goto    control panel/administrative tools/ component services/ local services     deactivate the recomended ones if you agree you don't need them.  you can dis-able them from there and also set them up so the don't auto-load.

also you can browse through the different features and read the discriptions of what they do and programs that depend on them and make your own calls as to what you need.

I'd recomend keeping a document as to what you changed and restart and check things out ever couple of changes so you can undo anything you screw up

Basically, you can start by using msconfig (Start|Run|"msconfig") same as in 98.  That will let you see what is running at startup and such.  From there, it comes down to disabling services that you don't use.  Some will be obvious, and some will not.  Use the Services applet in Administrative Tools from the Start menu.  Turn off the obvious ones, and ask questions here about the rest.  I've got mine pretty tweaked down as it is.
