Title: I really need to vent...
Post by: Dux on August 03, 2001, 02:42:00 PM
Last night I'm flying around in a Spitfire looking for some fun. I spot a con upping out of 24, its a 109. Oh boy, historic matchup. I let him take off (coulda vulched, ack was down). He leaves the airfield vicinity, coming toward me, and dives into a cavern, I dive after him. Our noses pass (no HO), I reverse up into a loop and start pursuit. He's slowly pulling away, but I chase. He starts grabbing alt... no way I can climb with him, so I keep my speed and stay low. He extends until he's about 4.0k away and starts heading back to me. I position myself until he's diving in from my 8 o'clock, I break left into his dive and evade him, he zooms back up to his perch. I stay in the canyons because I know he'll have to get low and slow to get me there. He BnZ's on me, I evade... this goes on for a good ten mnutes.

At this point I'm thinking... this is great, this is why I play this game. A well-matched set of planes, a well-matched couple of pilots, some great terrain to fly in (I love Mindanao), a historic opponent (109 vs Spit) and not the usual N1Ks or LA7s that I see EVERYWHERE, no heroes swooping in stealing kills while the others are busy. A dogfight that was based on tactics and strategy, not uber UFO gamey dweeb or gangbang tactics. This fight was the most satisfying that I've had in a long time.
I look at my fuel gauge... rats! 1/8 left, time to rtb. So as the 109 is in the middle of one of his extensions, I reluctantly break off and head for home. I'm smiling... I type into the radio "<S!> 109 @ 24. great fight. I'm bingo. RTB."

Silence.

Oh well, I'm heading for home, about halfway there. The whole time I'm keeping an eye on the 109, and see that he's now chasing me again, slowly catching up. I am verrrry low on fuel so I get as near to home as I can before he dives in on me. I dive into a canyon and break into his dive, and for the next 3 minutes we're having the same great fight again, but this time it's getting tighter, getting closer, my undersides scraping the canyon walls. Finally I get him at the top of a loop... I'm under him, just about stalling... I get a good burst into his tail and see his elevators come off. As I'm hanging on my prop, my engine sputters to a stop, and as I flop over to begin my glide in, I see his chute pop open. I'm just beaming at this point. What fun that was!

In white text in the buffer, private message comes in...

"Stupid Spitfires ruin this stupid game..."
"I can't fight in the canyons against a Spit that can turn on a stupid dime at 1 mph..."

As my Spit brakes precariously to a halt in one of the canyon valleys, I give the guy another chance, and send him a great big sloppy <S!> over the open channel. This time I know his name.

back at me on private channel..
"blah blah stupid blah blah..."

I send him my own private message.
"So I guess I'm just gonna have to take that as a Salute then, huh?"

Silence.

I logged off in disgust.

Since when is it all about winning? Is it score-whoring, stats, perks, ranks, etc., that brings this attitude out of people? Is it some kind of "my plane has a top speed 2.375 kts faster than his, therefore I should win all the time" stat-quoting, bean-counting mentality? Just what the hell is it that people expect from this game?

Or is it me? Am I just getting burnt out?

Well, you just have to laugh and remember that it was still a great fight!  Not everybody is as mature and reasonable about losing as you might be.  Just chuckle to yourself and keep on trucking.  :)

There will always be some insecure 1337 G4M3RZ out there that can't stand losing.  Sometimes they are just younger folks that haven't matured socially enough to handle the challenge.  It's the nature of the Internet multi-player beast.  :)  Comfort yourself in the knowledge that there are far fewer of that type of player in a game like AH than in most other Internet games out there.

There's always gonna be sore losers in any game you play.  The only way to avoid this is to play only with friends in something like an S3, but it doesn't look like that will ever happen here.

Hey Dux! Take it easy  :) Enjoy the moment and don't let such people to bring you down! You are there to have fun  :) And that is why probably most of good pilots left in past months  :( It was no longer fun for them... Well they were good or maybe the best and when you are the best its hard to find a challenge specially in the Main arena... but still its just a game and so take it like a game. <S>

You did good.  The 109 pilot was just kicking himself for being so stupid as to get into a turn-fight with a Spit.  Yours was a victory, his, mere frustration!

You know the name.....is that pilot "known as a sore loser"?  If so.....take it as a compliment and walk away.

I have been on the winning and losing sides of those battles....I must admit to absolute dissapointment when I lose.  I am able to take a deep breath and move on however.

To those who fly 109's and hate Spit's cuz they turn.  Too F*cking bad that is the ONE thing they do great and HTC aint gonna change that!

Sounds to me like you had a great time  :)

Compare that to my couple of flights last night.  I couldn't find anyone that *wanted* to fight.

I started by going up at a base on the edge of the action, and flying to the south of it a little, because there were way to many friendlies to the north.  Every enemy plane that came my way refused to fight; instead they all blew right past me and went to die in the gangbang to the north.  Even if I chased a plane down, it would end up with me on the guy's six, along with four or five of my countrymates.

So I went off to vulch at the nearest enemy base.  Too many friendlies around, I couldn't get in a shot, so I flew on into enemy territory.  Came across two high ponies who were obviously winging.  Great!   I'll die, but at least it'll be a fun fight.  So we merged, I evaded their first passes, and tried to keep an eye on both of them, because I fully expected one to re-engage, and the other to come along while I was busy.  But it never happened. They made another clumsy pass or two, then just kept on going.

Finally, when they were out of sight in the distance, I flew back to the vulchfest, saddled up on a friendly plane at 100 yards, and pulled the trigger to mercifully end my flight.

Sounds like you had a blast Dux. Enjoy the moment.

I'd privately laugh to myself at a guy that fought my fight and then complained that I won!

What the other guys said. Ignore him, savor the fight.

Ya know the funny thing is that I believe that is a quote from Goering himself during the Battle of Britain, wasnt it?    ;)

I had more kills last tour than I've ever had.  I definately got more <S>! than <FU>.

For some strange reason, I seem to remember the <FU> a tad more clearly.  For yet another strange reason, the <S> definately meant more at the moment.

Oh well, at least it seems you ruined his day  :)

It's the sort of thing that should go up on a "screenshot hall of lame" forum, if you filmed it...

Ouch.

Yet another BnZer with an attitude problem who seems to thibk that all slower, better turning aircraft should be there only as easily hit targets.

The important thing is that you enjoyed the fight, up until you shot him down.

Most of the time when I give a <S> I get one back.  If I get a <S> I always give one back, with a compliment on what I think he did well.  I haven't had many people go off on me, but it sure sucked when they did. Funny thing is, they never go off on me if they win.  ;)

Dux, hate to hear that. There are some bad sports here. Just throw him a <S> with a smiley if he is a tard about it.

I can see giving the guy room to take off, but where did your E-go?   ;)

I had a very similar experience yesterday.  People whining and squeaking about who knows what, insulting me and so forth almost pushed me to the point of cancelling my account.  I can deal with the Niki and any real or perceived problems with its FM (it's not like I can't choose to fly one if I wanted) or any other "topic of daily BBS whine."  What makes this game suck is the same thing that really makes it great.  The people.

What made me decide not to leave, were the people.  For every guy that insults me or what not, there are about 20 people that give me help when I need it or a good natured ribbing when mood needs to be lightened.  Just when I was getting to the point of deletion, several guys made me see what is good about this game.  Guys like Nash, AKHog, Oct, BAne, Booky, Nomde, and many others too numerous to list, made me realize what is best about this game.  No matter what happens, we are all in this for basically the same reason.  To have fun "flying" WW2 planes against each other.  Whether is is getting bounced by a high P-51 (Gee, wonder if that is Bane?), nailed by some unseen opponent (Oh no, not Nash AGAIN), finding a Jug that wants to TnB my hellcat (Frenchy or Nomde, makes no difference, always a tough fight), fighting alongsude the AK's one month and against them the next, this is what gives me the most pleasure in this game.  No matter the outcome, I know that I will always get an <S> and/or a good natured ribbing.  All my "despised enemies" challenge me and get me to push my virtual plane to its limits, hopefully, I provide the same to them.

So basically, what I am trying to say, is don't let one or two bad apples ruin YOUR fun.  Find where the guys you like to fight are, and take them on.  Always fun and always a learning experience.  Screw the lamers, the only thing they are good for is testing your convergence or deflection shots.

i had an awesome fight with dogfighter the other day. he is a class act and an excellent pilot.  check out the film.
 http://www.iit.edu/~buonmic/dogftr.ahf (http://www.iit.edu/~buonmic/dogftr.ahf)

too bad there aren't more like him, i wish there were. truth be told, there are just too many quakers and furballers in the main arena who value kills and score over all else for the MA to be enjoyable which is why i cancelled my account. some day there will be a sim where we can pick the people we fly with, and against.

that fight, where i didnt get the victory, was more satisflying than those where i get 10 vulches, but teh sad thing is most people in aces high arent that way.

Well it has already been said, but hey what’s another.

109 got impatient and lost his advantage and you’d think they realized that afterward.  As much as he was trying to slap at you it was probably himself he actually wanted  ;).

Co-E with a spit means its time for an extension, hehe.

** Zigrat – you don’t really mean that about being able to pick who you fly with and against?  Or do you?  Just finished reading 1984 did ya? **

[rant]

Everyone seems to forget one thing.

When I get pissed or someone gets pissed at me.  This thought is in my head.

Tired of losing!

Any one who plays this game on a regular basis loves it.  But, the whole premise seems to beat you down over time and this is precisely the nature of the game.  For there to be a winner, there must be a loser.

Mostly, it is being a loser that makes you get hacked.  A loser over and over again   ----> and over again.

Never seen a player whine on ch 1 "Oh man, La7 ruin this game and it sucks bad".  This line, after maybe they just made their 4th La7 kill in a row.  It don't happen.

At large, it is the more successful players having more fun and the less successful players being victims and having less fun.

Take a look at the player base, the experienced or veteran players hang around for years (and post here more often) and the gleebs (newbies dweebs) come and go.

When someone gets pissy, it is because they are often just tired of losing.

[end of rant]

This is precisely the reason I normally squelch Ch1 before I even take off. If I have a particularly good fight, I can always Unsquelch and give a <S> (win or lose, doesn't really matter to me.) If I start getting trash talk back, just squelch again.

Minotar is right, losing sucks.

Fact of the matter is though that if you died, YOU made a mistake someplace.Don't blame the other guy, don't blame the plane, put the blame where it belongs. With the guy who's hand's on the stick.

While I've been around since beta & I'm a AH trainer I dont' consider myself one of the "great" pilots. I die WAY too often, but I do manage to have fun most days. If I'm not, I'll log rather than give into the frustration.

Suck it up when it hurts, shoot the other guy a <S> if he earned it (and maybe even if he didn't) Grab a new plane & go try again!

I gotta jump in here.  I have fought dux more times than most.   He is a very good sport in my experiance with him.   I have killed him numerous times where he was alone and low and fending off other attackers far from home.   I have done this several times in a row on occassion.   He has done the same to me... Never have i had him get on one and whine.   On private we laugh together over the situation that led to either of our demise.

Heya Dux Long Time No See,

But I know what U mean by that I personaly remembver where he took off from fly back there and vulch the hell outta him but thats me and we know my temper gets the best of me I dont know how many people I have yelled at over channel 1 (like every Nik pilot freindly or enmy)  I have become a great fan of the Typhoon its great for tearing Niks apart and getting away.  Near the end of last tour thats all I did was hunt Niks.
I still will enjoy hunting them but in a different plane I havent decided what yeat but I will figure it out before I come back from my credit card vacation.

                        untill then
                        <S> all
                         Hodo
PS Dux flys a Spit 5 most of the time so extending from him in a 109 is REAL easy.
