I gather a lot of ex-AW'ers are joining AH. Are any going to WB2.77 or WBIII?
-
I'm glad to see new fliers here in AH, however, I'm sad to see AW close its doors.
I began flying AWDOS in 1990 and have many fond memories of the years spent there. I suppose WB's or AH is viewed the same by those who chose them as their first sim.
Change kinda sucks when your gettin old...new toys and features will help I know, but those early days were mighty fine IMHO.
Welcome to AH all you AW's...if any of you need any help, give me a buzz.

WB III has a seperate relaxed realism arena so, yes, I'd imagine so. ;)

I wonder what will become of the AW RR crowd... (FA??)

if you look at the MA you will see pleanty of RR guys have already made the switch..
-
BTW isnt it rather intersting that they picked the Pearl Harbor aniversary to kill AW
-
Yeppers it's now official. For those that hold active AW accounts, when plans are finalized for the farewell fly-by, I'll post them here.

I thought of two .... no three things, when I read the date.
1: How someone said the EA guys at the last con were walking around patting themselves on the back about their Pearl Harbor campaign/promotion (certainly designed to take advange of the movie).
2. The irony of it being Pearl Harbor day.
3. Somebody in the EA foodchain actually DID have a sense of humor (if not common business sense). ;)

The end of an era.... <sigh>
Never had more fun in a flightsim than I did in DOS AW.

That is very true - I know quite a few RR players who are now flying here. Yes, some are finding it difficult, but most of them are persevering as they really want to succeed. Even if they find flying difficult here, they are having fun with all the other aspects of the game... the PT boats, ground vehicles, carrier guns, ack guns, etc....
That's what's great about Aces High - there is something for everybody and for all abilities! As an Air Warrior who has been here since April, as well as continuing to play Air Warrior, I welcome those who are joining us now. :)

I know there are many who never flew AW and probably don’t care about its demise but many of us started out flying AW before moving on to War Birds or Aces High. It really doesn’t matter if anyone thinks AW was dated or if WB or AH was or is better. AW broke the ground and started the ball rolling which eventually lead to WB and AH.
I started AW in 1993 and flew it till 2001 flying with the Pain Squad, the 13th TAS (which is now over here) and the Nightmares VMF-898 during that time. I fondly remember Ghost, Shark Bait, Doom, Dragon, Ice, and many, many, many others from the early days. And made friends with Jordi, Lugs, and others in its later days. I am very glad that AH is here to be a new home to so many old friends and a place to make new friends and indulge in my addiction of WWII flight sims.
I guess I just want to say thanks to AW for starting things that lead to here and to raise a beer to your passing while we old timers soldier on and make AH fulfill the promises and potential that AW was never allowed too.
-
it says it's ceasing operation on the 6th, not the 7th.
-
Yep... i really enjoyed Dos AW. Dos WB was night and day improvement tho and now AH is a huge improvement over WB.

about the only sensible thing EA has done is change the date after protests were made.

You ever see the Looney Tunes cartoon where the little dog is trying to get the big dog to let him join in all the fun? Keeps jumping around and yapping so that the big dog will notice him. Kinda reminds me of someone... :p
-
Hehe ... I love that cartoon too. Makes me laugh. So, what's your point and how does it relate to the thread again?

The following comes from a previously recorded mission film:
:Skip To Break:
EA pulls up, and fires. Down goes JCN, burning in flames, when only moments before it had been riding high and mighty.
Host:
JCN shot down.
A kill has been recorded.
EA (macro) BUNNY LUV WINS AGAIN!! ALL HAIL EA!!
JCN: WTF?? We are on the same team!
EA: Sorry, crap happens, I shouldn't happen again.
JCN: FYYFF, I'm switching countries.
EA begins climbing back to altitude, searching for more victims. A little outburst like that doesn't faze EA--in fact, EA didn't even notice.
:Skip To Break:
EA spots AW, low, slow, already smoking, trying to make it home.
Over the radio:
EA: Don't worry about me, I'll not shoot down a low smoking helpless target. I'll even help you and ward off other attackers.
AW: Thanks--I was really worried, I couldn't last another fight like this.
At this point, EA falls in behind the unsuspecting AW and opens fire with all guns. AW falls to the ground and crashes in disbelief.
Host:
AW shot down
A Kill Has Been Recorded
EA (macro) BUNNY LUV WINS AGAIN! ALL HAIL EA!!
AW: You said you were going to help me!
EA: I lied. Unsuspecting targets are easier to kill.
AW: Dweeb.
:End Of Film:
Now the question is, did EA manage to land those kills, or did it end up flaming into the ground as well? Did it sacrifice all its advantages and ailenate its friends just to dishonorably pick off a few non-threatening targets? Or is it going to get away to vulch another day?
Time will tell.

Oh my God its true, gentlemen do still exist in the wolrd!!
I hope sir that some day soon ( when I have figured out how to get off the ground again), that you will honor me with a dance
:)
-
Damn.
Haven't flown AW in about six years (since giving up on trying to get anybody to fly full realism on Compuserve) but it's still sad to see the old girl go. Closest thing I could compare it to would be seeing a warbird go under the guillotine at Davis-Monthan. :(

AW was fun while it lasted and
spawned a cool variety of communities
and on-line personalities....
