no, it is a GUN sight. Just not an optical one.

Early WWII planes used primitive metal ring-and-bead sights instead of optical gunsites. When the optical ones were used, the old ring and bead ones were still retained just in case the optical failed for any reasons.

Shrug. It's what HiTech said in the MA when someone asked.

think on it from this perspective. The P40B (a plane with no bomb rack at all), has this ring-and-bear sight, as well as the P40E.

What do you need a dive bomb sight for, if you have no bombs to carry?

it was a gun sight :)

I don't really care enough about it either way to argue. But, your sentence has absolutely hideous grammar. It's shocking. Besides your obvious lack of talent in the formation and structure of sentences, I think you should try it before you knock it. Whether or not HiTech said that in the MA or whether or not it's even a dive bomb sight doesn't matter. The sight works for me. So I naturally assumed that what I read in the chat buffer was true.

Its simply a mechanical backup sight for the guns in the event that the reflector sight bulb burns out or the electrical system is not working.  Spares in the forward bases, early in the war, weren't very plentiful.

Sarge1...   I don't think the majority of the above posts were directed towards you... just a petty squabble between dingo and rram +)

Yes sarge1, I am clearly the idiot. Had you bothered to read my post in it's entirety, you would have seen that I was quoting Wotan.

Anyway, I wasn't squabbling with RRAM. I was squabbling with Wotan.

dont squabble with me because you dont know what you're talking about.

I think ram explained why.

Look, I'm not arguing that it's a gunsight. I think I explained why I thought what I did. Now, the reason this thread is unsually long is because you felt the need to belittle me with your stupid run-on sentence with no punctuation.

The P-40 metal sight is a gunsight.

bellittle you?

you have an inferiority complex that forces you to overcompensate what feelings you have with insults.

You are "belittling yourself". Its evident in your reply to Ram when he pointed out what the "ring-and-bear sight" was used for.

Instead of accepting and dealing with your ignorance you snipe back "HT said was whaa".

Then you attempted to shift the focus from your to me.

Grow up ya big baby.

I said this:

That's snapping back?

I didn't argue that RRAM was wrong. I didn't argue anything. I was only stating where I got the information and why I thought it would be correct.

Is that okay? Or do you need to drag this on further?

you are the one with complex..... drag on at will

Your reply to ram's explanation was something that one would expect from a child.

"My mommy said it was"

My point to ram was to let you believe what you want. Then you come back with even more childish tripe.

As I said....... drag on at will

Are we supposed to believe that you typed that in this format, or that you used MSWord to search and replace all occurances of SPACE with NULL and therefore creating this fancy little punctuation free run-on sentance?

And EvilDingo, who the hell cares about someone's grammer usage anyway? A lot of guys using this board are not American and speak/read/write English as a second language. Before you go hurling gramatical insults, how about you try to format your sentance in their langauge first?
