I've never posted a squeak about anything HTC before, but this map takes the cake.
Just my opinions, flame away if you will.
The water looks like a cheap hotel carpet. I can't decide what the ground looks like, something I chucked up after a hard night of drinking I think.
And whats with the bloody fields over 3k altitude? How realisitic is that? Anyone know the highest altitude any fighters or buffs operated out of in WWII? Does anyone ever think about realism when designing these things?
That's what I really like about AH, the realistc FM's, but that seems to be where the realism stops with HTC these days.
As far as the shape and sheer size goes that doesn't bother me one bit, I like the size. Shape is irrevelant, this isn't a historical arena.
I do appreciate the hard work that goes into designing maps, but I think sometimes things go a little to far.
I feel like I'm playing in Warbirds again, which after AH came out seemed like a bloody cartoon! Deja Vu.
I've been outta town and just finally been able to log in and try out the new version and haven't even tried the new planes or buffs but after tonight and this map, I don't have much desire to bother with the rest of it.
Please guys, reset this sucker(as in some country,I don't care which Bish Rook or Nit, take another one over!) and give me a reason to log back in.

That was considerably polite and well reasoned, and I share some points. For me this map is kinda... well, not motivating.
I for one will spend more time in the CT (Burma, yessss).
On the other hand, this may be a vewy vewy smart move to lure people into playing in the CT :D

Well I think that the map is intimidating. But when you look at it is trying to be all things to all people.
I really appreciate that the desert ring give's the opportunity to have panzer battles with very little aircraft interference.
As to the high Altitude well no, its not realistic. But i think that they've given thought to those slow climbing buffs. It generally gives them a 5-7k altitude start.
Also with the high alt fields, you have to think about the aeroplane that you use. The old faithful La7 dont work too well at those altitudes so you have to think about the medium to high alt fighters. Spit 9, P51, P38 come to mind.
It takes a bit of getting use to, but its not that bad.

Bad map, no doubt about it.

Good map no doubt about it

IMO I think this map Is great, I can understand why some wont like it but I really do enjoy it, HT are never going to be able to keep everyone happy there is always somthing someone wants/dosnt wont but its just the way it is.
I like the map, lots of other people like the map and for thoughs of you that dont unfortunatly its tough luck because its here.;)
I think people will get what I mean:confused:

I'm still giving the map a chance, size-wize.
What does bother me is the shimmering of the terrain. I don't know if the problem is on my end or not. I have to look away from it at times.
Also, I thirst for GREEN, in this map. I guess I wouldna made it in the Afrika Corps, or in Afganistan :D

We'll never find a map that everyone likes.
In the mean time...continue to fly, have fun, ignore the map that doesn't fit your style, enjoy the ones that do fit your style.
-
This isn’t going to be the only map, we will have others when they are finished. Wab has also already said in another thread that the altitudes could be adjusted and had sent something to HTC about it. Up to them as to whether or not it happens.
Personally I like the higher altitude fields and remember they are also dealing with game play issues.

I personally am finding its NOT the map...
I pick a place to fly, I zoom my map in and rarely see even 50% of the map for the night...
since when do u have to fly over the whole thing +) Just pick a home field and use it

I have to say that the map has really grown on me. At first I was frustrated in that my beloved Yak-9U seemed to have so far to fly on so little fuel. Then it occured to me that this map is only bringing an actual weakness of the Yak out into the open. I find I like that.

its just annoying(the map).

Gunthr, you have mipmapping turned on? It helps with the shimmering.

I've finally logged some hours on the map over the past couple of days. Great work overall guys (AKs), it looks like it was a real challenge to complete. I found several really good fights that lasted a while, and had my first canyon fight. I overall like the change in terrain and don't have a problem with the realism (any more than shooting down FWs in my Zero).
As a counter point, though, it took me an awful long time to find those good fights yesterday (over the course of 5 hours), with a lot of milkrunning/gangbanging going on as far as I could tell. Had to choose to be the vulchee or the banger, and neither was particularly fun for me, since I like a good (fairly even numbers) fight more than a base capture (hey, if you can have BOTH...). FWIW, this was not totally uncommon in the small maps, just the size of this one seems to make it easier. Yesterday actualy reminded me of the AW/Gamestorm FR Big Pork arena (not a good thing), but I'll have to see how the arena pans out over the course of the month as well as any new maps of modifications to this map that come into play.

The terrain is still butt ugly, and the altitudes are not early war friendly, but I found some good fights last night. The wide open spaces are encouraging small groups to attack fields, which I see as a good thing. I'd rather intercept 3v6 than 3v30.
Canyon fights are a blast.

enable MIP mapping the shimmering will go away.

I really like the terrain. It provides everything I need to have an enjoyable time for my squad and I.

I had a complaint, then found out that I just hadn't discovered the better parts of the map yet. Now I hold my tongue until I know more about the map. :)
PS: I still don't like the peace-sign design. Too symmetrical. Nature isn't orderly like that - a more random pattern to the rivers would've been appreciated.
-
Other than the slightly overwhelming size, this map has a lot of great features - Water ways big enough for carrier ops, tons of spawn points that encourage ground battles, many undefended targets for milkrunning bombers, ability to perform several captures in an hour, furballs for the turn-fighters (I've seen them every night I've been on this month), canyon fighting (!), only one wind layer (!), the ability to employ new planes and tactics that couldn't be used to max effect on any previous map, etc.
Rather than list things I don't like, I'd offer ideas for modifications. Make the high alt bases into alpine terrains with snow covered peaks and plateaus. Create flatter and greener low alt plains. Can low level clouds be added below the terrain alt (low level valley cloud cover/fog)? Spawn point mods that avoid steep hillsides or immediate base-in-range spawns. More easter eggs!

About a little realism with some artistic license instead?

I'd never thought I'd see the day that I'd agree with GRUNHERZ. It's not the size of the map that is bad, but rather the design.
Basically it's a shoddy design, a 'gamer's' map so to speak. Not that I wanted a historical realistic map but one based in reality would have been nice.
The desert terrain is nice though, reminds me of the old Libya3b and Egypt terrains for AW, but I have to give a major thumbs down to the design of the map, it's utter crap and still sucks hairy sheep balls.

shimmering is due to the mipmapping. you either have mipmapping disabled in AH video set up or in your video card display properties.

I understand that other squads are now working on alternative maps. We'll soon see the "Steak and Potatoes" map, followed by the "Burger and Fries". Personally, I'm working on a "Peking Duck with Pot Stickers". ;)

Immersion
Realism
Ownership
IRO thats what I want. The map fails in all three to varying extents.
and please please..... name the sodding fields!

Tshred, it's a bit of a shocker eigh. Quite a number of the guys had the same reaction on first seeing the Circular Concentric Even Handed High Altitude Desert Texture Quadruple Expansion Map (aka, the PIZZA). There's a thread or two on it...ahem. But, after a few days, it kinda grows on you. I'm at the point that the old maps seem so GREEN and BLUE, it hurts my eyes. What's with all the GREEN in the old maps?
Give it a few days...seriously!

ok as to the map.....
The number one thing is the AKs gave their time freely and saved us from another two month wait for HTC to make their opwn map.
If it wasnt for them we wouldnt have 1.10 so early!
I have tried making maps and its no easy or FUN task at times! Please guys will you just appreciate the sheer scale of the work involved here! Ive yet to find A BUG in this map which is a first for me and shows the level of commitment here.
Im not arse licking the AKs thats for sure, I consider them as an enemy squad as im most often fighting against them.I only have a passing aquaintance with most, ie AKcurly,AKwabbit etc
My own thoughts on the map?
I think the ONLY error is the symemtry is a little offputting because it seems to kill the variety BUT if you ACTUALLY play the map there IS a huge variety of areas.
Ok so it seems to lack a bit of imagination in the overall look and YES i agree it does not appear in the least a realistic map (which i prefer, tunisia is my favourite map) but it is by far preferable to mindanao for me! :p
one thing id say is although i hate the islands map as a whole id like to play on it with the new planes so maybe a little swap here and there for variety? thats is if the map is usable with new strat system of course.
HTC as a long term customer I am asking you to please give us a relistic section of map for the next map.
It doesnt have to have realistic bases BUT we cant have all bases 50 miles apart! there should be some that are further (perhaps rear bases>) and now we have the formations PLEASE either widen the formations or give us densly packed targets!
theres no point in having a formation if all we have is wasted bombs.even near misses that have larger blast radius would do!
THIS is where AH is letting me down personally.
BOMBS were big! the holes were BIG the blast was BIG, the death toll was BIG.
jees AH bombs are not right.I know its a game but Please do something with them.
I pictured wide tracks of bombs when you promised formations but what i see is 3 bombs hitting the floor in exactly the same way as an old 3 salvo used to (except it lands in a tiny A shape not an I shape)
what we need is a 3 track drop that allows us to miss by 300-400 yards and still hit something.
Ive never been so frustrated in AH as i have lately with the bombing.Flying hours only to drop and miss everything but a single ack or something.
The calibration is off for sure as i have tested with the green cross plotter in TA and my sight ALLways calibrates 300 yards shorter than the cross and the bombs land a further 200-300 yards further than the plotted green cross! its not right im 90% sure.
ah well rant over all at HTC for new planes, new strat, formations, it just needs a little fine tuning i think
oh and AK's, ive seen all the flak youre getting and its undeserved. thanks for the map.

Hmm, if ya can't find a fight on this map or a base thats within 10ft of yours then pull off the sleepmask or put the bottle away.
This maps got everything, if anything the bases are too close to eachother over most of the map. I use the Yak9 alot and find i've never run out of fuel yet, don't fly a headwind or fly at the proper alt. and it gets pretty dang good mileage.
My suggestion for this map is remove 30% of the bases and make the remaining ones larger for rear areas and some smaller dirt fields for frontline fields.
One indicator that bases are too close and too many is the fact that these days there are more base capture messages than kill messages (and yes i know about the 2kill min.).
