put them both in the sights directory. choose the defualt.bmp as your sight. you should get a glow around the sight (the defualt_alpha.bmp is now the transparecny layer for the sight when they are both present in the directory.)
my colors were just an experiment, play with them till you get something you like.

when ever i try to make 1 my colors end up all fediddleed when in game.
you think you could write up a quick tutorial?
thanx in advance

to make the alpha channel gunsight....
1. create a 128x128 grayscale image...fill it with black.
2. create a 128x128 RGB image.
3. in the grayscale image, create your gunsight design (using white for the actual sight and shades of gray for the glow effect.) including a glow effect to your desired taste. don't worry about color, this grayscale image is the alpha channel for the color.
4. save the grayscale image as a 256 color grayscale bitmap (there are several ways of doing this depending on the software you use....if you need tech support, i can help with photoshop mostly).
5. move to your RGB image now. select a color that you would like your sight to be (a bright green, yellow, or orange etc). fill the entire RGB image with this color.
6. save your RGB image as a 256 color bitmap.
the naming scheme is as follows:
gunsight.bmp ('gunsight' = any name you like)
gunsight_alpha.bmp ('gunsight' = any name you like)
they both have to be in the sights folder.
then when in AH choose the gunsight.bmp
that should do it.... if you need more help, feel free to send me a private message.

hope you like.

Great work mason, I like them! :)
Thanks.

Mitsu, is this really a K-14?
http://www.ceres.dti.ne.jp/~nabezo/AH/gunsight/K14b-2.jpg
I thought K-14 was the diamond ring sight.
I see this was the air-to-ground mode for this sight. Nice photos. :)
-
Sancho, it is an air to ground reticle.
-
I've quickly converted the sight found at http://www.ceres.dti.ne.jp/~nabezo/...ht/gunsight.htm
They are not as pretty as Mason Type 3 sight ... I'm a technician not an artist :)

mason,
How are you creating the blur effect. Is there a blur macro or blur tool that you use with Photoshop ?

there are several ways to similuate that blur.
you can create a layer in photoshop with just the white of the site. Then apply a layer effect to it. I used "outer glow"
You could also create a new layer with the white site then blur that layer.
From there, i used the airbrush tool on a new layer to simulate glare and dust/dirt on the retical.
photoshop 6.0 or up.
p.s. this file has a photoshop document with layers in it. you are welcome to check it out.

hehe, i see your problem!
here's the skinny....on the black "_alpha.bmp", anything that is solid white will appear as a solid color. anything that is black will appear completely transparent. anything that is in between will have the "alpha" or transparency to it. In other words 50% gray will make your gunsite 50% transparent allowing you to see things behind it. your "_alpha.bmp" is the site that you want to "design" your gunsite with. (yes, you still keep it as black and white and grayscale).
the color.bmp is where the actual color of your site is at. not the transparency. In other words, anything that is solid white or any grayscale on your "_alpha.bmp" will allow the color.bmp to show through.
what's happening in your sites above is that the white dot on the color.bmp is in the same spot as the white spot on your "_alpha.bmp". the red does not appear becuase the alpha.bmp is blocking it out. the white dot on the alpha is letting the white of your color.bmp show through, hence no red color.
if you make your color.bmp a solid red and keep your _alpha.bmp as it is, you should see a red dot in your sites. If that doesn't work, then it might be that you do not have a 256 grayscale image for the _alpha.bmp. Make sure that the _alpha.bmp is grayscale. And also make sure that the red square is a 256 color .bmp as well.
all else fails, send me an email with the files and i'll fix'em for ya ;)

which aircraft used the two sights you created Mason?
they are the best I've seen, do you have any more in the works?
thx in advance.
-
Mason,
Thanks for your insight. I have PhotoShop 6.0 and easily created the _alpha.bmp. It was the RGB image that was causing me fits. I created a 128x128 RGB image in PhotoShop with background color set to red, saved it to disk as a 24-bit bmp, but it would not show in AH.
What I had to do was take someone elses RGB image, open it in "Paint", and refill the image with the color that I wanted, and save to disk. This file worked fine. What am I doing wrong in PhotoShop 6.0 that causes AH not to display the RGB file ?
I want to be able to skip the "Paint" step ... :D
Here is what I came up with ...

ahh, ok.
in photoshop, when you are ready to save your color.bmp image,
go to: Image -> Mode -> Index Color
a box will pop up like the first one below.
choose pallette: "custom"
this step is going to make sure that the .bmp is in fact 256 colors. If we did not do this in photoshop, some of the colors would drop out and we would only have 188 colors (for example). Hence, the reason why i think it won't show up in AH.
After choosing "custom" another box will pop-up (like the second one below). What you want to do is click on the bottom right hand color box (see the highlighted circle around it). A color box will then appear asking you to choose a color. Take the eye dropper and click on the background of your color site (in your case it would be the red.) Then click ok.
This should have put a red color in that bottom right color box.
Then go ahead and save the .bmp.
Let me know if this works.

didn't have any in the works, but i take requests.
if you can find a site you want, show me and i'll try and create one.
The ones above are from Japanese AC. you'll have to ask Mitsu which plane they go in though ;)

Mason, is there any way of converting this .targa file so it would work in AH?
gunsite.tga (http://www.hispanicvista.com/ahfilms/gunsights/gunsite.tga)
I've got a mess load of WB3 gunsights from when I tried out a free weekend and am wondering if it's possible and if so how to convert them to work with AH.
Ack-Ack

Excellent work and thanks! Had did you convert the .tga file to both the 256 color and grayscale .bmp? Every time I tried, I always got either a black or white 128x128 square.

i'm using photoshop 6.0. just convert the mode from index color to RGB or GRAYSCALE.
if you're using paint, you might try copying then create a new image then pasting. i'm not sure about that, as i do not use paint that much.
