I'm told in the S.A. culture, particularly among the blacks, that wearing a condom is considered "highly unmannly" and pride factor runs very high, in other words, we could ship 40 billion condoms free to S.A. and they'd simply use them for water balloons, nothing more, nothing less.
The real question here is, is the puppet to teach children to accept the diseased children in school? Is it to teach safe sex?(doubt it) Is it to teach a "Moralistic approach with optimisim"? (the character in question is supposed to be a very optimistic character, even though stricken with a fatal virus)

The most accepted theory on where it comes from:
The virus was transferred from monkeys to humans in Africa somehow. There are different theories as to how it was transferred. Some say it came from eating monkey brain (smart move right there), some say it came from getting monkey blood on some open wound, some say it came from ..eh..kinky sex.

No one knows the original source for AIDS, as they don't know the original source for syphillis either..though its "rumored" that it began in Africa...I'd like to see a source too.

Oh...remember the last outbreak of Ebola in Zaire (now Congo) that one started when someone found a dead chimp on the track and brought it home for dinner...another smart move.
There are alot of diseases that originated in Africa, I suppose the climate there gives the various bacteria/virus the best chance to reproduce and survive

A(H2N2) Influenza Hong Kong virus = 1.5 million death
not all desease come from Africa ...

The thing about AIDS is that it is a disease that you can avoid with a 99.9% degree of certainty. That takes it from the realm of a true disease and into the realm of a behavioral problem.
Not a popular concept, but it can not be refuted, can it?
Of course, your behavioral choices CAN cause other innocents to be infected, re childbirth or malicous intent, but other than that, any given person can assure themselves of not dying from HIV.

Only if you start your OWN blood bank/supply, and you can do this but it costs you. I agree with the rest of your post.

Hmmmmmmm, Ya, know we haven't heard much about HIV and AIDS in say the last 10 years. I wonder why all of a sudden it has become a front page issue? I see ads on TV now that we weren't shown for years,but all of a sudden, bingo, HIV!! AIDS!!
Now in a kids show too. I hadn't heard much about HIV and AIDS even from the special interest groups.
What has all of sudden changed????

I'm no tree hugger but did you guys catch any of the news from the World Health Organizations recently concluded aids meeting? There were projections offered (sorry I don't remember the exact numbers) that based on the current rate that aids is spreading in South Africa that within the next couple of decades there will be tens of millions of children orphaned by aids. Further I have read horrible stories about child and even infant gang rapes down there because there is a belief that HIV postive males can rid themsleves of the disease by having sex with a virgin.
We may be missing the point folks.

No, there are several reasons we see more about AIDS now.
First of all, there's a conference, or was, just a few days back. Then, a new vaccine that works on some strains.
More importantly, we're now finding out that the suppresants we've used so effectively that someone infected with HIV was more likely to die of old age than AIDS are failing. The virus is becoming immune to it.
In addition, the problem has grown temendously in Africa. In some countries, 40% of the population are infected. The future problems this will cause are likely civil wars and so forth, ebyond the orphaning of (infected) children and untold suffering.
And HIV infections are suddenly on the rise again in the Western world.
I agree that it's more of a behavioral problem than a true epidemic - in the Western world. In Africa, due to lack of funds (and thus medicine), lack of education and *culture*, it truly is an epidemic gone crazy.
I think we'll find a vaccine within the next 50 years. But much can happen until then.

Most of the aids in Africa, and now China (scary stuff in some of the rural areas) comes frome heterosexual contact. Many of the infected are the wives and by extension newborn children of men of have strayed with prostitutes, etc. Now that it is out of minority (behavior) communites it is spreading at some alarming rates in the third world.

I heard HIV was invented by the CIA to control the black population of africa.
Also I heard that it was also to help deter many people being gay and it was issued by the Superpowers to control the over booming population of the world
If that is the case, didn't they think about the "normal" people who would have sex with african people? DUH!

My main problem with the whole situation, is that the USA is somehow responsible to pay for the whole worlds AIDS situation. We have done our part, and continue to do so, developing drugs and treatments for the disease. Our citizens are educated about it and the rates are dropping. Every other country has the responsability to do the same, and I, for one, refuse to pay for them to do so.

Actually, that's not true. The spread of HIV in the gay community has largely stabilized, and HIV amongst heterosexuals are actually growing at a much larger rate.
Africa is a prime example of this.
The stigma of HIV is, like many other STD's, that a person infected is viewed as immoral, promiscuous or sexually deviant, or a drug addict that take his stuff intravenous. The numbers show a much more well defined picture: while there's a larer fraction of HIV infected people amongst gay men and drug addicts, 'clean' normal people outnumber them by far.
In a way, it's understandable. I find it a f**cking hassle to have to stop what I'm doing and enjoying to put on some rubber. I do it, but I can imagine that more passionate people than me (my ex girlfriend just called me 'emotionally dead, heheh) will have a harder time interrupting their little games.
I see HIV and AIDS as a disease. How people contracted it is, to me, almost irrelevant (not counting the cases where someone knows their partner is HIV positive but still doesn't practise safe sex etc). Once they have it, it's no different morally than having other diseases or illnesses.
Unfortunately, a great deal of people do not have the same opinion as me. Not saying I'm better than them, but I think being open about it allows for a more aggressive and unhindered war against it. Taboos have a tendency to slow development.
