What reason is there to risk a (virtual) life in a dogfight?
Why shoot someone down who is no threat to your homeland, and at the same time take the risk to get shot down yourself?
Why take the risk of beeing shot down if you aren't even going to do any damage to the enemies properties (fields)?
Is there a reason to attack bombers that already dropped their bombs, or GVs that already lost their guns and are immobilized?

Maybe cause its fun?

i fly to engage mostly in a2a combat its fun, its challenging, and unpredictable. Win, loose, draw it doesnt matter.
I was never out smarted by those pesky fighter hangers and a vh never reversed and shot me down.

Question: Why do you enjoy furballing without mission objectives?
When I'm in the MA, furballing IS the mission objective. MA is just a scenario practice area to me.
What reason is there to risk a (virtual) life in a dogfight?
It's a virtual life and therefore meaningless. The real question is why NOT risk it?
Why shoot someone down who is no threat to your homeland, and at the same time take the risk to get shot down yourself?
Because it's fun. And my homeland is the USA.
Why take the risk of beeing shot down if you aren't even going to do any damage to the enemies properties (fields)?
I couldn't care less about the "enemies properties". As long as they keep spawning targets and are not too far away, I'm happy.
Is there a reason to attack bombers that already dropped their bombs, or GVs that already lost their guns and are immobilized?
It's fun to watch them explode, and it's fun to piss off anal retentive people who actually care about dying in the MA.

Glad you asked :)
I was a RL pilot in my younger years. Have a fasination with WWII aircraft. Flying here, or on any sim is as close as I'll ever get to doing that.
I love fighter "tactics" Shaw comes to mind and have done alot of reading on the subject.
I enjoy the whole picture of:
- Knowing your planes fighting envelope
- Knowing your opponents planes fighting envelope
- The constant reassesment of energy states
- Learning SA in a multi con envirement
- Learning to fight at a disadvantage
- Evaluating "when" and "where" certain actions are required
- Evaluating mistakes in SA and ACM
- Applying whats learned from that
- Putting yourself on the edge and seeing what shakes out
- Enjoying those rare moments where you use the full potential of the plane your flying... and kick ass
- The enjoyment of catching your hair on fire and coming out on the other side, then cleaning the nose print off your moniter
- After all of the above land the sortie
There is NOTHING better than a good "rope". Your opponent still has drool on his chin when he hits the chute :) Come to think of it a good co-alt 1 vs 1, or catching a sleeper with a dead six shot ranks high on my list also. Sleepers crack me up and always will.
You'll notice it's all air to air combat. Shooting a ground target just seems silly to me when there are real people out there flying fighters that NEED to be killed :D
I try my best to do that.
I don't have a homeland, any allegiance is restricted to saving a countrymans butt if I can, and killin badguys. The Knights are fine upstanding fellows though.
I'm a hunter, I kill people. An inbound fighter is why I fly. He's mine. He made the mistake of getting in my space and by God he's gonna pay for it :D
Give me a turner with a couple of B and Z guys above me and I'll have a great time. I'll lose the vast majority of times but jeez it's fun.
I'm not playing this country against that country. I've got WWII online if I want to do the "country" thing.
I want to fly planes with the express purpose of fighting other planes. If a base never switched sides it wouldn't make a difference to me.
Bring the fur, the fur is alive with people that "Fly the planes"
Straight and level is boring.
A whole lot more straight and level around here of late. Not as much fun.
And I kill bombers that have dropped there load so I can hear the crew scream on there way in..........
;)

"I'm a hunter, I kill people. An inbound fighter is why I fly. He's mine. He made the mistake of getting in my space and by God he's gonna pay for it "
And thats the truth :)
Scared bullets dont hit anything.

I wonder why anyone does anything BUT furball.
Go figure. :D

Hey do you have ANY fun??? :(
-
Well after you put a string of kills in your belly, your virtual life will have a whole lot more meaning. Just my thots...
-
yeah, i kinda think dogfighting is fun...
-
I like watching burning wreckage
(preferably not my own)
Shootin toejam down is fun. If it isnt for you then youre in the wrong game :)

ccvi, cause lack of time or lack of patience.
When I take off and head towards the combat zone I, mentally, visualize a black screen with a blue horizontal bar with the text "LOADING ...". When I spot the enemy the bar has got to the 100% and the game starts. It is like the very old tape games, loading along 10 mins, but here, when you are shotdown you need to reload the program again.
-
"LOADING ...".
I never thought of it quite that way Mandoble. I LIKE it :D

the strat is pretty lame.. it has to be since it would make no sense if it were complex in a game that people enter at all times day or night..
Every air to air fitght is different . every strat element is a lot like the boxed games we all left. Air to air brings out the people in people and strat brings out the Ai in people.

I've been furballing a lot in the spit V this tour. When i can't find a furball i've been defending bases solo against huge numbers of cons. For me it's the excitement of the dogfight itself, dodging cons, making snapshots, checking your 6 every couple of seconds, sweaty palms (yeah i get them in long fights:D ) etc...
At first i hated going solo against numerous amount of cons, but i'm really starting to enjoy it. I feel a whole lot more satisfied dogfighting 5+ cons on my own for 5-10mins whether i live or die, than i do from capturing a field, bnz-ing some a/c below or anything else i can think of. That's not to say i wont climb to 25k every so often to go hunting buffs, or join a mission to capture a field. But, nothing comes close to the feeling you get when you have a fantastic dogfight, nothing!
On another note, i've had far more 's this tour than i've had all my previous tours, why? because i've been furballing a lot more due to flying the spit. I've had some fantastic fights where i've had multiple cons on me where i've shotdown 1 or 2 down, made one auger or just pinged a con in a snapshot. After the fight i've had 's from the guy i've shotdown and/or the guy that shot me down......and that feels darn great.:D
ok, enough of my rantings for today.:)

A good fight deserves a salute' regardless of outcome. Furballers love what they do and the vast majority Salute' a good fight.
I think it's kinda special with the furballer.
Can't Salute' a cherry picker if he picked your cherry, I mean really ?? Kill the cherry picker and he's so busy killin his dog you won't get a reply :)
When taking bases, talking to the hanger or building you just blew up is sort of like talking to a cardboard box. It listens, but it doesn't have a food hole....
Yep, furballers are special.
Honest to goodness real live people that are trying to kill you...
Come to think of it, that last sentence is too wierd..

Because it's only a virtual life, and dogfighting is a lot of fun. I've said it before, but it's like boxing or martial arts, with planes and no pain.

Why ask why? It all good. Do what ya like, change and do something else, have fun.
-
Because a 6 year old can "man" a tank/bomber, successfully. I dont think one can out fly me.

bud!
i fuball sometimes to test my ACM skills (however bad they are)
but i do agree with you... wish there was more emphasis on stratgic battles.
in advance to all you who say goto the CT or whatever...
there is never the #'s that the MA has and it's usually full of uber pilots. (no fun to be killed all the time since i suck:))
-
fun. pure and simple fun. Maybe I will get to do this more after the current TOD is done. Putting in a lot of my weekly AH time into getting things ready for Friday's.
As for salutes... I give 'em when the fight is memorable. To give them out after every good fight cheapens the salute, IMO. I flew for a bit on Saturday, in both CT and MA. Only one fight deserved a and hblair gave it to me in the CT. Of course it was me in a Boston and him in a 109, some fight... However, since it was hblair, he got a :p instead of a . Damn Bobby hater doesn't deserve a ! ;)
