Man arrested for burning kitten on grill

---------------------------------------------------------------------
LIBERTY, Missouri (AP) -- A man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly burning a kitten on a barbecue grill as several other people stood around and watched in amusement.
A witness pulled the scorched, 7-week-old tabby from the hot coals, but it was severely injured and had to be put to death, police said.
"They kept saying, `Meow, meow,' and they were poking at it with a stick," said Sherry Scott, who burned her hand grabbing the kitten.
Charles C. Benoit, 24, was charged with animal abuse, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He was jailed on $10,000 bail.
Jim Roberts, spokesman for the Clay County prosecutor's office, said he does not expect anyone else to be charged, because no witnesses could identify the others.
Scott said that on Friday night, she saw 10 or 12 people at the barbecue grill in the courtyard of the apartment complex where she lives. Scott said she asked what they were cooking, and they said it was a cat. She said the group taunted her, daring her to rescue the cat.
She said the group scattered when she threatened to call police. She said she pulled the kitten from where it had been shoved into the coals at the back of the grill. Its tail, whiskers, fur, eyes and throat were scorched.
"I called him Lucky because I thought I got him out of there just in time," she said.
Scott said she and other residents stayed up Friday night trying to nurse the kitten with an eye dropper of milk. But animal control officers decided that because of its respiratory injuries and inability to swallow food, it had to be destroyed.
"If you would have seen him, you would have cried," said Sheri Simpson, one of the residents who helped care for the kitten.

I read this in the paper this morning...makes me sick. I'm not a big fan of cats, but doing something like that is barbaric.
Whomever was responsible should be put on a spit and slow roasted IMHO.

Not too long ago 3 guys in texas were found innocent of animal abuse after skinning and beheading cats, because they were not owned by anyone. Was a pretty similar situation, a cat lived in a general area and was fed by the residents but belonged to nobody in particular.

I can't believe some people. Those who watched are no less guilty than the guy who did the act. Too many heartless morons in this world.
-
I'll bet he doesn't even do a year, and whatever his sentence is, we'll never hear of it.
-
I say a bunch of us raid this guy's house and taunt him as we hold his head and upper torso over a grill or a stove. We could yell "amazinhunk, not funny now huh?"
I don't like cat's (allergic to the dander) but when people do toejam like this, they should get the toejam knocked out of them, REPEATEDLY.

Agree completely
Then again, Im fearful God is an ant, and when I go to heaen, there's gonna be this BIG magnifying glass, and its gonna start feeling REALLY hot where I'm standing..... :D

I'm catholic and I think the "eye for an eye" punishment needs to weasel it's "ugly head" into punishing slap on the wrist roadkill sentences towards the amazinhunks of society.
Whoops, I'm already an ant in the eyes of the big guy up there. I still stand firm.

I'm not usually the vigilante type as I prefer and hope the 'system' works.. but I would shed no tears if this toejamhead were conftonted by a group of people that beat the living toejam out of him..possibly involving a grill or heated impliment of some sort. Its sad, but probably for the best that they had to destroy this poor creature. I don't believe in god, but I know that what goes around, comes around.. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near this amazinhunk when his karma catches up with him.

Hawk220, It is your own choice, you have that right and I respect that. I'll bring the matches, do you have any lighter fluid for that bastard?

some homemade napalm possibly? we wouldn't want the fluid to run off too fast....a nice brand burned into his face or forhead for all to see forever would do..I know its a bit middle-ages..but this guy went way too far..

This happened about 40 miles North of here. Lots of coverage.
Now, don't get me wrong. I think the guys are a bunch of a-holes and we probably wouldn't miss this algae if it left the gene pool.
Still, there was a huge outcry for blood to answer blood over this kitten's horrible torture and subsequent death.
Yet I'll wager the same day there were stories of adults seriously abusing children, adults serously abusing other adults, etc. in the newspapers of almost any major city you'd like to pick.
Yet the punishment for such offenses against a fellow human being are considered far too harsh if the convicted are sentenced to 2 weeks in a county jail where they don't get Cable TV.
Go figure.
-
too harsh for the tree huggers maybe.

Soone or later, these amazinhunks have to accept responsibility for THEIR actions!

Exactly Toad.
Just 30 minutes ago, it was verified that the 5 year old little girl was sexually assaulted and murdered in California and we're talking about kittens.
-
If it was my cat being grilled by someone... I'd want the same punishment for the guy as if he'd tortured/killed a human member of my family.
People who abuse children... deserve far worse than anything the penal system is legally allowed to do to them.
edit: Apache, Toad - is it impossible to be outraged by both events?

The woman in the dog mauling case in SF got 4 years for killing a young woman. Go fiure. A man out there got 3 years for killing a dog. Our values are a little strange, to put it mildly.

Very good point. Right on target to you Toad for having the tact and fortitude to point it out here...
