I am not at all pleased to see the old MA map's being put back into rotation, they are way to crowded, I supose if furbaling is your bag then this is great, but frankly I dont care for constant furbals, and some of the old maps are just bad for game play the Mindano map espichaly. The New desert map allows for fluid game play and had the best of both worlds, Furbals at chock points and small unit actions around the sides, it was fun again for me to play in the MA, I am not thriled with the prospect of sluging it out on these older smaller maps:(
-
Not everyone likes the pizza map though,I for one hate it,this way, eveyone can be happy,we all get to play the map/s we like,at least untill we get decent MA maps made, anyway, youll get to play the pizza map longer than the smaller ones. :)
-
Very Happy to see old MA map's again
And you still have the pìzza map to play it now and them...
-
more maps is better maps
its good to have different maps that focus on different aspects of the game.
the old maps are proven furball generators.
the pizza map is clearly favoring ground vehicles.
-
We need more of the LARGE maps for a rotation. Going back to the small ones is a dissapointment.
-
Then go fly in the CT brady. Pretty simple really. Plus, I'd like to see someone in the CT so I could try it. Pretty hard to when is 99% vacant.
-
Choke point on the Pizza? Which fields? I'll look for it next time.

Check out the Q&A forum. HT has stated that the old map s were put back into the rotation so that all could compare the style of maps and offer feedback. Also, the Pizza map is undergoing rework and is intended as a temporary map at best anyway.
-
I heard "this maps too crowded" arguement this afternoon... there were 165 players in the MA at the time....
too funny +)

I like clouds, at least with the other maps rotating in clouds will come back during those particular maps ... I hope ... ya? clouds will be there?
Pizza map is okay but there are a lot of aspects I do not like.
Back door field hopping/grabbing is to easy.
Too many bases to cover with too few people most the time.
Some areas base altitude was kinda a bummer (launching at 8.5k).
The map itself ... a pizza ... or a peace sign. Can't really feel "immersed" when I look at the map personally. Such a perfect lil symetrical world.
No clouds:(
Terrain poorly blends (looking into the distance I see and exact square of ... sand).
Back to the map not giving that immersed feeling, lets talk water. Sueze canals anyone? sheesh. Moats anyone?
But ... there are aspects I like about the map.
Canyons are cool.
CVs can basically reach all over, be in strange places.
Ground vehicle coverage and the vehicles access to general terrain all over is nice.
The single mountain between certain airfields is a fun "point of contention".
But the ndisles, baltic, mandolin ... I like those maps as well with many similar and many different pros and cons.
All in all, good to see them back, better to have map rotations than no rotation imho.
Guess I'm bored. Typed way more than I anticipated :D

As Much as I love the CT, I Love playing for rank, I can not play for rank in the CT and I can In the MA, I fly in the CT some of the time now and since my set up is this Friday I will be in their more this upcoming week.

Last night.. around 60 (at one time) were on.. quiet fun really.
For the NEW NEW map well no one will be happy.. .so lets just all fly in space.. no map no nothing but a bunch of dweebs flying around in there la7s and spits (and no alt potatos in space either)
(hope u can take a joke.. if not i laf @ you)

I for one am very happy to see the new maps in rotation. In fact of the full set, only lake uterus is small enough for the timezone that I generally play in.
-
I think this is a positive step. I'm quite happy to see a rotation again.
-
Looks like the vocal minority of whiners got their way with the old maps coming back. I wold be very happy if I never saw them again. I think there will be just as many, (probably more), people coming on now saying 'please dump te old maps for good' as there were saying 'the new map is boring/too big/I fear change'
RIP the old maps... especially mindinoa (please)

What are you guys complaining about? You can pick an empty corner of any map and fly for hours without seeing enemies to your heart's content. If you want to milkrun undefended fields, offline mode is always available. And much more satisfying Pizza is delivered almost everywhere in the United States.
Long live the old maps!

Other map may have been pizza, these old maps are bland warmed over TV dinners that don't work with the new strat system.
-
People didn't use the new strat system with the new map anyway. People just milkran undefended bases.
-
I love flying bombers, & missions, allot more than furballing, but I gotta say I love the smaller maps!
The pizza map was just wayy too big, couldnt find a single airfeild, enemy, or determine where the front line was, or what needed capturing.
AH may need a little bit bigger maps but Pizza map was just WAY too big!
I love to see the old maps again!
-
As time went by on the Desert map I began finding even the remote bases being defended, milkruning was not as rampent as it had been, lines stabalized and Big Battles were being fought across a broader front, Change of any kind is a tough one for most to deal with, For me I remember the old days on the Beta map and all the good fighting that went on when AH had a lot fewer people in it now days on these smaller maps with the Huge number AH has in it reminds me when I flew FA, which was basicaly just one big furball. I can tell you this though, I went and watched TV tonight, I havent done that since the Desert map was out.
-
Old maps are a big let down, only small pockets for furbals, open spaces with nothing and no chance to buff without being noticed and slaughtered.
Pizza map loud mouth crybabies did get their way it seems........ a minority of loudmouth cybabies.
Pizza map had it all for me.
This Island map that is on now is way boring me...... only thing to do is mindlessly head for a furbal. Try to up a buff away from action (in order to get any alt), and you are marked as a buff as soon as you hit radar. No Gv fun either. No clouds, pure blue stark water .
Pizza map was really getting fun.
Oh well, I know that new maps will probably be on the way.

I dunno, I certainly didn't see gameplay evolve into anything even remotely resembling that.
I did, however, actually have the urge to play again tonight. That was the first night I actually _wanted_ to fly (couldn't due to prior commitments mind you) since about day 4 of the pizza map release. At least now we're back to a format that accomodates a wider range of people. Once the pizza map returns, it will be my turn to catch up on TV.

Well Vortex you have 34 hours, I have 92 hours so far this tour, I may of seam somthing you mised :)
BTW I curently have no life:)
-
I also don't get how anybody could not find a fight, the Map is real easy to read, in about 30 sec I could find a Fight of any type, by looking at the map.
I gues it is a prime example of the Human condition, "excuse me miss wher is the informatin desk?", the cleark point's to the Big Red Sign over her head that read's INFORMATION , and she replies " you are at the information desk sir can I help you" I gues having to look at the map is to much for some people? Nothing personal just an observation.
-
I got an idea... How about a map inbetween the size of old maps & pizza maps! Think it would be a perfect balance!
What you all think of this idea?
-
I think the 512 map is best personaly, and Ah is going to Grow Gents, that means more people....
-
Hell, Just be grateful they (HTC) went to the trouble to give us diffrent maps............... Thanks HTC:rolleyes:

Perhaps, although I doubt it. One doesn't need to spend 6 hours a night online to see the failings of the system. I found it quite obvious within a 30 minute time frame on most nights...at which point I'd usually log in frustration.

The last week I flew, just about every sortie I had would start at a base close to what appeared to be a busy area. By the time I got to that spot the fight was usually done...i.e it would usually be 30/1 odds at that point. There is no real reason to defend bases in this map, so why bother when the milkrun comes your way? Moreover there was no discernable front. The size makes it too easy to simply bypass pockets of activity on the Magical Milkrun Tour. Accordingly most of my flights ended off in what was now the abyss with me Alt-Tabing out, and just doing a right click and "Close" on AH. I certainly wasn't going to waste more time traversing several more sectors in this ongoing quest for a fight.
That was the norm. There were indeed exceptions when a good fight would be close to your base. They just weren't that frequent unfortunately, or many times just didn't have much longevity for some reason.
If one flew outside the 4-6 hour prime time window then it was a real job trying to make it work. The map was an unmittigated disaster in that context imo. It is grossly oversized for prime time imo, let alone the 50-200 number range of off hours.
You see the problem is that when the "Information" sign is written in a language I don't read, and has a tarp thrown over it, and the desk it hangs over is stuck in a broom closest, it isn't really doing the job it was originally designed to. That's a much more apppropriate analogy methinks. There's a lot more broken with the pizza map than there is working, from a gameplay pov.
But again, we come full circle back to my original point. With a rotation you can have all the fun you want in the vast wastelands that is the pizza map, when it cycles though. I'll enjoy the shoulder to shoulder crowds of the previous maps. That's a far better solution than what was offered the last few weeks imo.

That would depend a great deal on what sort of folks you are flying with. A lot of people were playing checkers while the rest were playing chess.
-
The old maps have no canyon fights. Canyon fights are the only fun aspect of the game. Without canyon fights, the game is just boring, and no fun at all.

Agree with vortex and hoolign... the talentless strat potatos can find areas where they can fly around for hours doing nothing in the small maps.
agree with popeye too tho... we need maps with canyons. I especially want to see an "area" arena with canyons in the early war "area".
Seems to me that all the whining is coming from guys who want to force everyone to fly ONE map all the time.
I say anyone who says that the pizza map is jam packed with action and furballs is either very lucky, a liar, or doesn't know what action or furballs are.. or any combination of those things.

Beats me...
My norm is quite different. EVERY time I've flown there has been at least 2 pretty even furballs going on for hours. Always with less than a full sector flight to engage (it is centered on a target base for some reason). And I can be flying at any time, US am, US afternoon, US prime, 3am..doesn't matter, there's a furball if I want to join it.
I cant understand folks that consider it work to just look at the map for more than 3 seconds. I must need a new job if yours is that easy.
It IS a pleasure to fly a map thats balanced finally, none of this "the north (west, whichever) country is immune to caputre" that we have with ALL the old maps except Baltic.
New alts, canyons, greater CV reach, everything is better, more variety. The only thing the large pizza is missing is a country immunity position and action chokepoints. I can do without both.
I do see how the "map is too big I can't coordinate all the action" generals who are ignored anyway wouldn't like it.
-
My two cents worth, my eyes enjoyed the old map last night did not have to get up and take a break from eye strain. When they rework the "Pizza map" maybe they will have at least one area where there will be less yellow and more green and blue tint, and then it will have something for everbody.
From reading all of the posts on the bbs it looks to me like there is about a 50/50 split on the maps question, would be courious how many phone calls and Emails Hitech got about this maps question though wouldn't it.
-
I for one was THRILLED! to see the old maps back! I dont know if the new map or new version had anything to do with it but I have had on average at least one disconnection a night since the new update came in. Last night flying was great!
Old map was TOO FREAKING BIG! It got to where I didnt even pay attention to the base capture messages. Who cares if you just lost 3 bases..heck! we got 60 more!! Give em a few more!! Who cares???? I sure didnt anymore.
Strategy??? You've got to be kidding! I tried and tried to makes sense of any strategy concerning which bases were more strategically important...couldnt find one. You would be zoomed in on your lil area and a base looked important then you'd zoom out and realize...oh heck we're being flanked a thousand miles to the south along an defended front by a bunch of base grabbers who just took 10 bases. You realized that the fight you were just in over that one base didnt really change the overall picture that much. And personally I find grabbing undefended (read less than 5 guys defending it) BORING! I'm not here to be McArthur, I'm here to have fun. You want strategy? Ever hear of Avalon Hill? Advanced Squad Leader? Europa Series? V-4-Victory? Stalingrad? Board games?? I signed on here to play a flight sim. I've been playing board games since I was 8 years old! Checkers and chess? You want to play chess? Ok we can play an e-mail game of a true strategy game if ya want but whats wrong with checkers sometimes too?
I'm here to have FUN and to me fun is flying about 1 sector, to 10k or so to a fairly evenly match FURBALL! of about 40 or 50 guys, tear into it, kill as many as I can and pray I can get out alive!! Dont insult my intelligence because I refuse to have fun the way YOU say I'm suppose to have fun.
This seems to all be boiling to a head...there appear to be two groups here, one that wants to have a more concentrated arena where larger fights occur and another that wants it more spread out for more "strategy". Seems to me its a bomber/vehicle group against a furballing fighters group. Personally I thought that was what the MISSION PLANNER was for! I dont need a mission planner to go find a fight in a fighter, at least I didnt until the new map came out. If you want to play Strategy etc then go make yourself a mission, get a group of buffs with escorts/vehicles, whatever and play the way you want.
Well....guess I'm venting here a bit :D but what I do know is that with the smaller maps I was almost ALWAYS able to find a pretty good furball to dive into and have fun and that was NOT the case with the freaking huge pizza map. Say what you want but I will define fun for myself and for me concentrated, mass furballs is FUN!!!
Dont EVEN get me started about that endless mass of brown....
-
new map old maps who cares its the fight that appeals to me and nothing else be it in a bomber or fighter or gv
there is no shortage of that in AH that i can see
-
AH may need a little bit bigger maps but Pizza map was just WAY too big!
bingo
-
After a few days went By I could always find a furball a BIG one on the Desert, Just as Boozer, said. and I could find the other type of battles two, Frankely I fly to much to be thriled to deth to fly into a big hary furbal all the time, I do enjoye it sometimes but not all the time. The Best part on the Desert map was that I could do that if I wanted or, or do somthing else. The Quake stile battles on the old maps hold nothing more than a passing interest.
I to played SL. and ASL from the time I was 8, and games like Flat top and Tokyo Express before that, It is just their is more to this game than just The Furbal, which is whear it has been for months. We have a lot of new people in AH who never knew what it was like before, they know nothing more than the Furbal it has become, I am not suprised they are complaing frankely for they don't know better:)
The desert map allows for both types of gameplay, the problem is the Furball fan's just have to look a little harder to find a fight.

Holligan... pizza is NOT delivered where I live....:(
-
I'm probably wrong, but I don't think so:)
I would estimate that of the entire subscribership in AH, only about 10% have bbs accounts....of that 10%, I'll bet that only 25%-30% actively read and post. Not a very complete pulse of the AH community imho.
So, my point is this....I think that the overwhelming majority of AH subscribers play the game and enjoy themselves, irregardless of what map is up or what plane is modelled or whether ballistics are accurate or not.
C'mon and shoot me down HT....you know how you enjoy doing that:)
-
The problem with the old maps is that they're just too crowded for a non-skilled person like me to have a shot at surviving unless I only fly the speed demon, uber-fighters.
I happen to enjoy flying other aircraft, but in these 256x256 mile maps that is a death sentence for me.
The 256x256 maps are just way too small. A 384x384 map might be OK, but I was enjoying the 512x512 map. On it I was enjoying AH more than I had in many, many months.
Maybe its because it wasn't so crowded when I signed up back in 1.03 and am used to having other options besides "endless furball".
-
Hmmm still seeing lots of multi runs by slow early war rides in the 'old maps'.
Seeing guys complain the maps are too small when there are only 165 players on....
165 players is 1.03 numbers...

I closed my account a couple months ago as the small maps were just too crowded for my taste. After a two week trial with the pizza map, I was just about to sign up again, but today I read that the old small maps are back in the rotation. I have absolutely no desire to go back to the bad old days of overcrowded arenas. I'll be back when the small maps are gone.
-
What cracks me up, is THE FACT that if everyone's needs were met, you'd still find something to squeak about. WHAHAA!!! They brought the new maps back!!! WHAHAA!! Where did he come from, he wasn't there a second ago!? WHAHAA!! I put 15 37mm rounds into that Ostie and it's still up!! WHAHAA!!!

Want new maps there is a terrain editor, until we have more of a choice of large scale maps the smaller ones should be in rotation. Just imagine playing the pizza map for a year.

I like the map variety, as it makes the AKDesert go away, and finally reintroduces all those proper sized nice green, easy on the eye and fun wheel I keep getting my foot stuck in, maps.
