Title: Best Bands of all Time
Post by: NUKE on July 18, 2002, 12:08:47 AM
Based on: Songwriting, performance, vocals, creativity/originality and impact on popular music.

1. Beatles
2. Zepplin
3. Stones
4. Metalica (maybe 3 instead.... time will tell) Metalica may go down as one of the last big impact bands.

3. There's other bands?  Damn, I need to get out more.

Metallica doesn't belong on the list, IMHO.

Not that I don't (or didn't) like Metallica. I've got a few albums. :)

In no particular order...

Beatles
U2
Rolling Stones

The not-so-obvious choices:
Run-DMC
Nirvana
Prince and the Revolution

Biggest impact on current "popular" music?
Matchbox Twenty (yes, I'm sick of them and everyone that sounds like them and no I don't consider them one of the best of all time... just fitting a whine in)

My woman used to live near Simon Le Bon, apparently he walks to the local off licence (thats liquor store to yanks) and if the other customers dont recognise him he starts whistling "The Reflex".

I always wished he'd be in there the same time as me so I could ignore him and wait for Rio to start being whistled......then turn round and say "Hey, I remember you, you're that fella who hit the bum note at Live Aid."

The Beatles of Heavy Metal ? ROFL.  Curly needs to keep you away from the liqour cabinet Wulfe.

They are long haired hippys who intice mankind in advocating the dragging of fingernails down blackboards in a vain attempt to put a tune to their music.

Now..... Neil Diamond !  He could have been a Beatle ! :)

Agreed - The Dead had a HUGE impact. One year before Jerry died they were still the highest $ grossing touring band in the world!

Little Feat! - OK, not a huge impact, but they were really good.

Genesis - along with
Yes - helped define/break the boundaries of rock music.

Since they formed in 1981, San Francisco Bay Area band Metallica has gone from underground heavy metal band to one of the most successful acts in the world, with an intensely loyal fan base.

Sales of Metallica albums (including 8 full-length albums, and one EP) total over 60 million copies worldwide (with over 40 million coming in North America alone), and have earned gold and/or platinum certifications in over 40 countries. In addition, a live box-set release (containing over 8 hours of live music and video, retailing at over $80), has sold over 600,000 units worldwide, making it the biggest selling box set of its kind in history.

Metallica has garnered numerous awards accolades throughout the world their career, 4 Grammy Awards, 2 American Music Awards, 2 MTV Music Video Awards and 26 California Music Awards.

When it comes to touring, there are few, if any, bands who deliver live the way Metallica does. Their shows, which began in clubs and garages in the early 80’s, are now selling out in arenas and stadiums throughout the world, and continue to be the most intense, powerful and visually stimulating concert experience ever delivered. The most impressive achievement that bears mentioning is the fact that Metallica continues to be a strong attraction in the touring world; a truly rare feat in today’s mercurial entertainment business, where fans often change allegiance to bands as often as they do hairstyles.

Metallica is a band whose success can be directly attributed to a passion and no-compromise attitude in every project they undertake.

Their music is just too new for you fellers.

An opinion from an Asian barbarian: ;)

Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd

they are the all-time three whales on whom the popular music world rests upon.

Then:

Jethro Tull
Deep Purple
CCR
The Kinks (looks like I am the only Kinks fan in former USSR)
Rolling Stones
Fleetwood Mac (early albums not modern pop crap)
AC/DC (the spirit of R'N'R)
Dire Straits (the only R'N'R band w/o obvious blues roots)

I intentionaly leave Jimmy Hendrix outside of this list. He was the one and only.

Soviet bands: Aquarium (definetly the only one itel-rock band, though too many Western rock tunes used w/o copyright notice ;))
Zoopark (Mike Naumenko was the only Russian who understood true nature of R'N'R)
Nol' (Zero). Bayan is much more impressive then Hammond organ.

I am a commie bastard only according to mr. Littman, and you know why he thinks so ;) After two years passed I finaly published my correspondence with our Albanian "friends" on a "you-know-what" website :) Maybe next year I'll publish my experience with Russian law-enforcement that came upon me by their request...

You guys in Poland were happy to have at least SOME Western music. The first Beatles LPs were released in USSR in 1986, and I, a 13 years old boy, spent 3 hours in a cold March rain in a line to buy them... I am still proud that I have a Yugoslavian "Meddle" LP by Pink Floyd. It costed me enormous ammount of money in a black market.

I listened to Metallica in the early 80's when they weren't a household name.   They sold out starting with and Justice for all....after that I stopped cold turkey listening to them.   I only have pre And Justice stuff by them.

My fav. by them is Kill em all.

I love Zep...  but how on earth can you put them at the top of the vocals list AND leave the Beatles off (and Queen for that matter?)  Lennon/McCartney is probably the best vocal matching of any band, IMO.   Add into that the fact that George and Ringo could sing pretty damn well, and you've got the best vocals.

Vocals (in order)
Beatles
Queen
Beach Boys/The Mamas and The Papas (tie)
Simon and Garfunkel

Honorable Mention: Styx, Floyd, Who, Elvis, Jim Morrison

Ok normaly I wouldn't yell at a police officer, but since you're in Australia :D

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Metalica was the best band of the 80's period!!!!!  They inovated metal the same way the Beatles inovated rock n roll.  Though I agree about compairing them to the Beatles.  They really should be compaired to Bethoven or Mozart or the like.  As my proof I give you "Anesthesia", "Call of Katulu"  or "Orion"   that's just 3 instrumentals!  That doesn't include songs with words like "Master of Puppets", "Ride the Lightning","Fade to black", "Creeping Death" or "Four Horsemen" or any of their songs!

These guys actually took time to compose thier music!  Most of thier songs in the 80's were well over 5 minutes long which is why they never really got much radio play back then.   Yes,  they were "alcoholica's" and yes they partied and had long hair.  But they were NOT hippies!  They thought about every note they recorded back then!  Then Cliff died :(    Still a fan though :D

 Nobody mentioned Chicago!

 didn't see Rush

 also didn't see Primus

I'd defenately have to add Glenn Miller

my 2 favorites right now are POD and Puddle of Mud followed by Nickleback...

 You are all communist nazi's!!!!!

I seriously thought about mentioning Glenn Miller and Louis Armstrong.  (miles davis too).  Actually, they do influence some popular music, I mean swing was back in for a year or so.  ;)

Chicago is fantastic, but not in the top 5 of any category (except maybe best trombonist in a rock band!)

Rush is good too, but only should be in the top 5 for the best rhythm.  ;)

Wow, where to even begin.

At the top of the heap, in no particular order:

Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Jimmy hendrix
Nirvana
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Smashing Pumpkins

Pretty Dammed Good, in no particular order:

The Sex Pistols
The Who
Velvet Underground
The Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Grateful Dead
Beatles
Janis Joplin
Queen
The Smiths
Iron Maiden
Ozzy/Sabbath
DKs
Fear
Black Flag
Elvis Costello
The Ramones
Johnathan Richmond
Tull (going to see in a few weeks actually)
Pre-Disco Stones
Dire Straits
Mignight Oil
Boston
Rush

I somehow, with the exception of some metal and punk, managed to miss most of the 80s music scene. I noticed one day: "Hey, WTF happened to the guitars? Is that a drum machine? This is as bad as disco!" :) Floyd and Zep kept me happy until Nirvana. What a loss Kurt was, up there with the other greats who burned out much too young.

The Ramones? Well ok, they were one of the 1st punk bands, but they really were quite bad.

I saw the Ramones in the UCSB (Santa Barbara) Gym back in 1976. My buddy wanted to get an autographed 45 (thats a record for all you babies) and while we stood in line, one of us commented on what a bunch of sweetheart bags the Ramones were. When we got to the front of the line, the guy signing the 45 looked at my bud and said "sweetheart bags huh?" Then he laughed and wrote "We ain't no duche bags" on the record. (Misspelling and all). That 45 was framed and placed on the wall of reverence in my buddies Isla Vista apartment.

RIP Joey

Chuck Berry  - All catagories (Ok forget "My dingaling")

BB King

John Lee Hooker
(Ok Blues/RnB out of the way)

Black Sabbath (I still don't think any other band can imitate their sound).

Deep Purple (Gillan, Lord, Paice (Sp)? Blackmore) Lineup

ELP (Showed all the other 70's "Synth" bands how it should be done)

Alice Cooper (Creativity/Originality - Just go see him live)

Rolling Stones (You can't stay up there for 40 years without being at least a bit good -Whoops slipped back into RnB) :D

Grateful Dead, Are they still alive?

Mike Oldfield (For originality)

Jimi Hendrix

Lynard Skynard (A sound all of there own)

Dory Previn (Who)??? :p (One of a kind - trust me)

Artists like Clapton, Gary Moore, Mark Knophler (Sp)? all worthy of a mention but only as masters of their art not as originators

I agree IMO Master of Puppets was their best album, their subsequent albums may have been as good I think if Cliff had not died . In Justice they tried to compensate for the lack of a strong bass guitar sound with the bass drum beats . The black Metallica album was much better than justice imo, unfortunately, to me it seemed like their last earnest attempt . I like listening to their later albums but it's not the same music that made them famous .

...and NO ONE mentioned Frank Zappa?????

philistines, the lot of ya! ;)

Ok, I'm assuming that we're excluding Jazz & Blues, and focusing on great BANDS and not individual performers/songwriters, etc... so, in no particular order:

Frank Zappa - ANY band of his
Jimi Hendrix Experience
The Beatles
Traffic
Led Zeppelin
Steely Dan
The Meters
Parliament - Funkadelic
Sly & The Family Stone
any James Brown band of the 60s - 70s
Mahavishnu Orchestra
King Crimson
Little Feat
Velvet Underground
The New York Dolls
The Ramones
Humble Pie
Be-Bop Deluxe
The Clash
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
The Grateful Dead
The Police
Alice In Chains
Black Sabbath.... ONLY with Ozzy! Dio must be destroyed :)
AC/DC - preferably with Bon Scott
Pink Floyd, provided it stops with "The Wall" ;) Actually imho the Syd Barret floyd is the most interesting music of the lot.
Iggy & The Stooges
ZZ Top... BEFORE the fuzzy guitars came in!
... and many more that my memory won't produce on demand ;)

now.... Bands that Must Die:

Journey
Foreigner
Asia
Boston
Rush (that one word could start a 300-post flamewar ;)
Any leather/hair sporting 80s metal atrocity :)
any leather/hair sporting 80's "new wave" atrocity, with the exceptions on the above list
Abba
Styx
...feel free to add ;)

While I like all of these bands and have their albums, they aren't necessarily my favorites, or representative of what I usually listen to, but...
In no particular order...

The Clash
Black Sabbath (the ORIGINAL Sabbath, that is)
AC/DC (they slip in on influence)
Johnny Cash
The Misfits
Black Flag
Dead Kennedys

Cool!  I was pokeing around in a music store in 1983 and found "Kill'em All" buried way behind loads of other stuff.  I saw the "Hammer and Blood" on the cover and thought "I just gotta hear this".  Turned out to be one of my favorite albums for YEARS, I couldn't believe the "new(ish)" sound.  Of course nobody in Oklahoma had ever heard of them, and some folks thought I was kinda wierd when they heard it blasting out of my very loud KRACO (woohoo, cheap as hell but great sound for about a month) car stereo.

...Started to un-like Metallica the 5000th time I heard Enter Sandman, now I can't stand the bastards since the napster thing.

Could music be the common thread ( no pun intended, yet implied by it's mention) we all realate too?

Lookout!

"Everything Thermals

Yeah, everything Thermals, straight from the pages of your journal.

I know nobody's ever seen it, the Thermals know all your secrets.

Yeah, everything Thermals, we're in an outerspace wormhole.

Brought to life by the big bang, traveled to Earth in a Dodge van.

The Thermals go right to your head, the Thermals have sex in your bed.

And everything in circles.

Yeah, everything Thermals. They come in four shades of purple.

Some are tikes, some have trousers. Some have pictures of flowers.

They are the Thermals, they guarantee life eternal.

And only need skin and bones, and a sweet pair of headphones.

The Thermals don't need drugs to have a good time.

The Thermals need drugs just to stay alive.

And everything in circles. Yeah, everything."

This is a tough thread to keep on topic because the parameters strongly limit choices but the temptation to mention personal favroite bands is strong...

The most limiting parameter IMO is "impact", "vocals" is also tough.

OK, I'm prolly gonna blow it, but:

1) Elvis Presley

2) The Beatles

3) Pink Floyd

Only one of those is a personal favorite, BTW.

The portion of the Beatles songs that Michael Jackson owns is valued at about 900 million dollars, and he doesn't even own many of the biggest hits.

Some may not like the Beatles, but a lot of musicians and many fans agree that they were a huge force and talent.

While I didnt read each list I've seen alot of good bands listed but havent seen one performer that shouldnt be forgotten as being influential.

How can any list  that includes the likes of the Beatles. Led Zep and such be complete without mentioning the one performer who as far as Im concerned is the true father of Heavy metal  &  Rock N Roll
that performer is

Chuck Berrry
I mean this dude was doing heavy stuff before anyone ever even came up with the word heavy metal
Classic example is "Johnny B Goode"
I mean if that song were released for the first time today it would still probably be a hit.
