Title: Are you afraid of another terrorist attack?
Post by: Innominate on July 20, 2002, 02:35:35 AM
Then it's worth noting that more people are killed every year in car accidents than by terrorists period.  So flip on the news, get a bucket of popcorn, and watch the show.

"I'm afraid we have woken a sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve.

It's funny how some people are desperate to get the giant back to sleep.

It is even more funny how some of the people who are the most desperate to get him back to sleep are the very same people that the giant is trying to protect.

I think am afraid of Congress more than anything. They can't run their own show properly but think they can run everyone else's better then they can run it themselves...

this is a good question.. where ARE all the terrorist attacks that they said were going to be happening? We've reorganized the government,  have a new 'Der Fatherland' security department..placed part-time barbers and diswashers with machineguns in our airports for window dressing..people are giving up their right to privacy willingly for what? Where's the danger? We are supposed to believe that there are cells of badguys plotting and planning just down the street.. now the government is asking us to spy on each other, with this citizen corps.. even tho its been about a year since the attacks..

things that make you go hmmmmmmm

Damn straight. Get the job done and the return to our regularly scheduled programs as soon as possible.

The problem is that Bush has offered no end. There's is no exit strategy.

The Al-Qeada exposed a weakness. Are we going to spend the rest of our lives in fear and heightened alert?

No.

At no time, before or since 9/11, have I been afraid of terrorists.

Nobody I know here in CA, Liberal or Conservative, is afraid.  So far as I can tell the only entity that is talking about how afraid Americans are, is the Government.  It behooves them to make people think there is a mass of scared Americans out there as it makes it easier to get the police powers they've been drooling over for the last decade.

Looks like the news media has been back to normal for some time...

Before 9/11, Shandra Levy was story #1.

Now its the SOB who killed the little girl in Orange Co. (Riverside), accounting practices of Enron et al, then the kidnapped girl from SLC, then maybe folks hiding in caves...

Looks like we are holding up.

Do I think there will be further attacks on the US?

Yep.

Will they be devastatingly successful?

Maybe, but probably not. They'll kill some folks but, as has been pointed out, not nearly as many as will die in auto accidents this year. Not nearly as many as will die this year of having poisoned themselves with tobacco over the years.

Any acts will draw a response however. That's good and bad. It could easily lead to escalation by both sides.

But scared? Nope.

"And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. " (From The Desiderata)

I'll die when I'm supposed to die. So will you. So will Bin Laden (if he hasn't already.)

And two generations hence, few if any will remember any of our names.

Gotta go now. Time to play AH.  :D
