Title: PCs soon to simulate reality???
Post by: AKSWulfe on July 22, 2002, 11:29:48 AM
(http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs3/img/screens/ss10.jpg)
Too save on you guys downloading images: here's a few more.
Truck In T-Storm (http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs3/img/screens/ss19.jpg)
Mossie under cloud cover (http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs3/img/screens/ss14.jpg) (notice the sun lighting only some trees, I assume that's from the sun peaking through the clouds)

That's from CFS3.. so if Microsoft can do it, then imagine what other companies will be pushing out in a year or two...

Screw eye candy, that toejam is straight smack for the eyes.

But yes, the beyond the graphics CFS3 will blow like it's predecessors in terms of... well anything except graphics.

Then of course there'sthis screenshot from Maddox's RTS game (http://www.il2sturmovik.com/forgotten_battles/screenshots/Water.jpg)... but those water effects are supposedly going to be in Il2: Forgotten Battles.

5 more years, and PCs will be running reality I think...

Maybe... but then again, I wasn't comparing either of them... just saying PCs are getting some pretty advanced instruction sets that will possibly allow for virtual reality to really become virtual reality in terms of visuals.

Absolutely incredible!

One question though.  Why is there only one guy in the Mossie?

Because it was modelled by Micro$haft?

Or it was the Tse-Tse version... the one with the 37mm cannon (or whatever size it was)... I don't think that one had a co-pilot/navigator?

Believe me, I ain't buying CFS3... I just thought those particular screenshots looked real good.

Regarsless of graphical quality, they still lack the field of vision and depth of vision that human eyes have.

New graphic-chips are already showing some nice features. If you're running card with Nvidia's chip check out their demos in http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=power_demos

Pretty indeed. But we still have the problem of 19 & 21" monitors to solve. Maybe a really hi-res projection system to the screen size up to 8-9 feet, eh?

Otherwise all that pretty "eye-smack" is still going to be invisible at normal RL (tm) shooting ranges.

So, when can I get my 2400X2400, projector and 8 foot wide screen for $199?  ;)

Ah yes... the visual barrier...

Fug the projection screen, I hope they come out with one of those dealies, in the movie the Matrix, where they plug your bellybutton into a huge computer.

We can't be far away from simulating touch and feel (to our nerves), I read about a scientist who was experimenting with this sort of thing for artificial limbs.

Man... the next 20 years or so are gonna be uber-cool! :)

Wasn't there some discussion a coupla years ago about the feasibility of using low powered lasers to literally 'paint' an image direct to the retina?

IIRC, the theoretical resolution from such devices was in the order of 3,000,000 * 3,000,000.

Bloody heavy headset though :)

<------------- Uses WideScreen HDTV and STILL my gunnery sucks.

How much eye candy do you need? I see plenty during the current fights in AH. Enough to play the game and more.

They're called MEMS, the military uses them in some pilot's displays.

The future is a pair of those mounted on a wave of real VR type goggles.

That should make a powersurge pretty exciting...
I think I'm staying with a monitor actually :)
