I like this idea. It will be interesting to see if this arena will have a population. We will have a furball arena(current MA) and a Fly and Live arena.
I am pleased to see that what you do in combat not only affects you, but also affects others. Chase for the kill may boost your ego but lose in the long run as you abandon the mission objective!
Hot Dog, this mission theater is just what the doctor ordered. And when ya get in that old furball mode, and we all get in the mode, there is the MA.
-
Actually... the MA may or may not change. They haven't said anything about reducing strat in the MA.

The "Runaway!" arena is more fitting methinks :->

I'm delighted with this news.
More than anything else, people seem to be complaining about the gameplay. Whether it's caused by furballs or the size and style of the maps, or whatever else, a lot of folk don't seem to be finding the type of game experience that they want.
The option of a mission based theater will virtually double our gameplay options. Unlike the CT, i think it will be populated most of the time - the opportunity for medals and rank progression will exert a neat pull on people. I will also enjoy flying realistic missions, even if i only see an enemy once every half an hour.
I'm really looking forward to this. HT have once again shown a brilliant ability to 'think outside the box' to bring us an update that won't just be based around a few new planes.
-
In point of fact, Target:Rabaul has been planning to be a mission-based flight sim from its inception, so I don't think it can be characterized as a brilliant innovation for HTC.
However, I am looking forward to seeing how it'll work out. Target:Rabaul has yet to see open beta, so my money is on HTC to be the first to implement it in a massively-multiplayer environment.
-
I remember all the hype when CT was first announced. I'll wait and see if the "lasting" response to the new arena is better received.
-
I think the CT was created for a minority of players. They got what they wanted but it just didn't have the ability to attract a larger group. This mission oriented idea may have a better chance to attract players who are looking for a more realistic way to fly planes. Fighters supporting bombers with the goal of getting the bombers to and from their target. I think it will need a lot of players to be a winner.
I hope to see carrier forces face off without any land in sight or if land bases are involved maybe a limited number of planes from the land bases!
Just the idea of a new way of flying other then what I have seen in the MA of AH and the way we flew in AW is exciting. The fact the HTC has always impressed me with well thought out ideas adds to my anticipation!
Two weeks? Did I hear someone say two weeks?

I know I shouldn't evoke the name, but AirWarrior: Vietnam was supposed to be a mission based flight sim as well IIRC. It will be very interesting to see a game actually get this into play.

Surprised no ones mentioned autoscenarios?
Could be good.

The 412th FS will be in this arena. We can't wait :D

It seems like a step towards a degree of realism that I personally feel has been lacking from AH since I subscribed. While its fun furballing, it has gotten a little too much like an arcade game for me, with a lot of people beating their chest and furballing as much as possible just to get a great score, at the expense of any actual gameplan or strategy.
One of the original appeals I had to AH was the realistic aircraft and the hope, at the time, that online game play would be somehow different than your typical offline sim. As it stands now, AH often seems more like your standard offline sim, but one where the "AI planes" are actually human driven.
The concept for 1.11 sounds cool. At least it would seem to limit the "let me see how fast I can blow through a furball and how many cons I can kill before one of them gets me so while I ignore my wingies as they get gangbanged and some con blows away the goon which was coming to capture the field" mentality. 1.11 might actually require people to work together, fly formation, etc.
Seems kinda cool.

So, is this arena open now? This has been the only thing that's attracted my attention to HA in a couple of months and I'm considering subscribing just to try it out.

Next release stickman.......
wont be long though

Not necessarily. There will still be tards like me who are there to mix it up. If I can get to the enemy, one of us is going to die. If it happens to be me, then fine. The last thing that I want is to land an undamaged plane with a full clip. If I never get promoted beyond Warrant Officer because of my eagerness to engage, then that's fine as well.

You'll have to wait a while to get in this new arena. When there is no time estimates given you are usually between 2 weeks and 4 months away (guessing) and I would guess closer to 4 months as we just had a new release. Hang around and hone your skills until then! :)

aaaccggkkkk! EA! aaagggkkkkk!

The Cutthroats squadron will certainly support this arena. Historical terrains, countries, and airplane matchups? This could bring the challenge and fun of scenerios to everyday gameplay.

I will play there, my rank will be PLO... :)

Those that expect to get into a fight right away may be dissapointed. Prolly get tired of the climb-out and log for the furballin in the MA, I hope. Of course there will be those that are spoilers just to be spoilers, but will soon tire of that and may even get a kick outa flighin to complete a mission:), I hope.

I was ready to cancel my account 'till I read about this arena
Hopefully it will work. I'll certainly give it a good try.
-
I'm going to go back home now. Someone should give me a yell when this fabulous arena has been opened and I'll give AH a try for a month or 3. Until then, I have no use for a continuous furball. Not my style of gameplay.
Eskimo2, after reading your post I realized that you belong in Warbirds on Jet day.

Quite possibly the worst part of WB con 98, besides having to go home :D, was listening to Wild Bill spew his crap about AW:Vietnam. That was the night I learned what vaporware meant....

That's interesting. For me the worst part about AW Con-98 was having to listen to the Kesmoids talk about AW:V. I had zero interest in it, and thought it was a harbenger of doom for AW. (Circle get the square).

I was already wishing for some sort of nightly auto scenarios like Air Warrior used to have in the Gamestorm days. This sounds like that expanded to a 24/7 basis. If it is at all as I think I understand it is going to be I will fly it often.

LOL...It couldn't have been as bad as listening to Littman at the 1999 WB con banquet in Palm Springs; I almost lost my dinner. The saddest part is, he had practiced it  ahead of time! Same tripe...different speaker.
