Title: Fastest car you've driven?
Post by: hblair on July 26, 2002, 10:05:14 AM
Mine was yesterday. '85 Ruf Porsche 911 turbo. We had to repair the rt. quarter after a tire decided to unpeel at highway speed. A 4 wheel alignment as part of the repair and the way these suspensions adjust, they are prone to slip under hard acceleration. So guess what I had to do to insure the adjustments wouldn't slip back? Yep, it was hard work having to get out on the four lane and do some hard accelerations, but hey, somebody had to do it. This car is a monster. It has somewhat of a turbo lag but when the turbo does kick in, W O  O O o ooot!. Owner says it has 400+ horses. I believe him. :) As a teenager I remember lusting over these in the Motor Trend / Car & Driver magazines. List price was for like 104,000 bucks in '85. Came factory with the same 17 inch wheels (this was in '85) and Dunlop Denloc tires that the 959 supercar had. Cool Car. I need me one of these. Anybody wanna buy my wife and kids? ;)

Fastest "i've" driven is 130mph in a 1992 Mustang 5.0 5 speed :)

Fastest I've been was in a friends 300zx back in 88.  We made it from Sharpstown to galveston in 25 minutes!!!!!!!!  slowest we went was 110mph fastest was 150mph.  Scariest 20 min of my life!  Unusual thing is that we saw zero cops.  45 was at that time a speed trap driving into Galveston.

Fastest I go now is about 75.  Learned too much about physics to drive fast :D

My college roommate got us from Gainesville to Tampa at an average speed of 180 mph in his Camaro in the '80s.  First and last time I've gone over 100mph for an extended period of time.

I've driven cars that can go fast, but never driven them fast.  Too many amateurs on the highways.  Most of my go-fast cars were Pontiacs, with a Triumph Spitfire and Honda Civic EX in the mix.  Took the Civic up to 85 mph through interstate traffic once but the alignment didn't like it.  Now I'm into size and bulk - Toyota 4runner with 16-inch tires on Enkei alloys, perfect for camping at the race track. :)

But if I had the money, yeah, a Porsche 911 GT3 would be in my stable.

You can keep your wife.  I can barely afford the one I have now!

Ah, fastest car I've been a passenger in, was 180mph in a 1993 Ford Mustang Notchback (built fer Drag Racing).  A seven car pursuit ensued and the driver (my buddy) was mercilessly getting his bellybutton kicked by Michigan State Troopers, Wayne Couny Sheriffs and Livonia Police Officers (original pursuers).

Porsche 944 (1986 I believe)  A client left it in my possession for 2 weeks while he vacationed.  Never exceeded 120 mph, but man, gave me a woody accelerating in that thing. I've had my BMW 330Ci up to 140 before I backed off. (Still had RPM range left to redline) But, it did not excellerate like the 944 (for obvious reasons, and $$)

It was on a deserted, straight, 2 lane road 9/10s of a mile long. The car was my 1967 Chevelle SS, powered by a 425hp 396 from a 65 vette, mallory dual point ign, stock gears. Top speed reached?? not positive as speedometer was buried but tach read 7000 rpm in 4th gear.  Think I figured it to be prolly around 147. Didnt ding anything but was still goin 40 or so at the end of that road...

And, hit 132 on my 1965 BSA Lightning Rocket one day on Ft. Bragg, out by the drop zones..

But, all that occurred when I was young and invulnerable..

me and a buddy took his bmw M5 from Seattle to Vegas. Thru the desert between Tonopah and Vegas I got it up to 165 (yes the new chip was in) the beast had more to give but I chickened out before car topped out. Damn thing felt like it was going 55 and on rails..

1972 Mercedes 450SL.  That things was fast, powerful, and just damn fun to drive.  Took it from San Diego to Palm Springs and back.  The mechanic at the local german fix-it place said that we needed to get it going fast to clean it out or something.  So we had to follow the man's advice.

Speedometers are off as much as 10% in the M5's.  You probably were reaching the max potential top speed in it, but were truly only doing around 150/155 (This is documented via BMWNA)

Gurney Eagle, Riverside Raceway, late 60s.

Edit Offenhauser engine ... if I remember correctly they were squeezing over 500 horses out of that 4 banger?  or was it 1000? guess I should have paid more attention to the mechanics.

Cars that race bikes are usually driven by numpties that live in a dreamworld.......but on a motorway (translation: freeway) with zero traffic (2am) a Ferrari owner can be forgiven for thinking he can take on a bike.....after all it's top end that matters on a motorway and a 355 has got quite a lot.  Guess the driver ran out of bottle at 150mph.

I have very fond memories of burning a ZXR400L3 away from the lights past Gloucestershire Police Headquarters racing a souped up Subrari rally car with the biggest exhaust pipe you've ever seen.  Again, I won.  The driver musta been impressed cos he gave me a thumbs up at the next set of lights and turned off.

The car with the most potiential I ever drove was a Ferrari Testarossa, but I never got it above 130mph.  At that speed it felt like I was doing 60mph in a normal car.  I have no doubt that it could reach the 180+mph claimed by Ferrari.

Fastest I've ever driven was 155 in my M3.  I haven't had my S2000 more than 125 so far.

Suspension is EVERYTHING in a car...about a month after I got my car, I decided to do a "by the seat of the pants" drive on the freeway on an early Sunday morning (ie: no traffic).  I did not look at the speedometer and accelerated up to what I though, what I felt was 70 MPH.  When I looked down feeling confident I was within 5 mph of that range, I was doing 95 mph. :D

I used to own a Mercedes 220D. Sucker was a pig around town, went 0 to 60 in about 3 days, but on a long trip across the desert I wound it up to 100 and the car just kept getting smoother and smoother. Was a very strange sensation.

The only car I've ever had airborn (as a passenger) was a MB.  In NJ, over a small wooden bridge in the hills of Watchung mtns., a friend got a 70-something MB up to 70 mph and hit this bridge, we got all four wheels off the ground (scrapped the nose a bit on landing).  German cars are built for high speeds, you don't get the floating sensation that you do on many American cars.

I did 140 in a 1978 280Z 2+2 on I-10 west of Yuma AZ one summer. I also have been over 125 on a Kawasaki KZ1000P (Police bike), once while on a loooong training ride and later responding to an "Officer needs help" call in town. I have also been up to 115 to 120 on 2 different BMW civilian bikes, a boxer and an "oil head".

Now I do 75 as there is no reason to go faster in traveling. The old 55 mph limit sucked BIG time.

Jumped a bridge doing 65 in my '86 Chevy once. Unfortunately, the last time I jumped it I was in my father's '98 Breeze (Anti-Lock Brakes Standard). I neglected to note the stones all over the road at the landing spot. Needless to say, my Celebrity (Drum Brakes Standard) didn't seem to want to grip the road upon landing. Damn thing spun out and the only thing that stopped me from hitting a wooden fence was that oh-so conviently placed road sign. Knocked the sign right off the pole and damaged the moulding on my bumper in the process. Needless to say, I had that thing going 90 away from there in roughly 15 seconds.

Until recently 1988 hyundai excel I went 120mph in it. :D (it was just after the rodney king chase, when the police said he was doing 120 i didnt believe the car could go that fast, so i tried it. Very very scary at high speed in that car, barely in control).

Recently my brothers worked '69 firebird putting out about 650hp, does about 10 second quarter mile (need to get official time on it). But we were on highway in virginia near roanoke doing about 160 easy...that was fun.

I owned a '70 Datsun 240Z. Was road racing an older gentleman in a white Porche Turbo Carrera.

I kicked his butt while driving thru city traffic and other congestion. I finally broke clear of the traffic and opened it up to increase the distance between us. At this point, I finally had a chance to look at the world around me. I covered a very familar distance (from known corner to known bridge - drove this highway a million times) in what seemed to be a blink of an eye. I looked down at the speedo and it was registering 140 mph (speedo went to 160-5) and I still had some more pedal to go. WHOA !!! backed off the gas, and looked in the rearview to finally see the Porche break clear of the traffic. He gained rather quickly on me because I slowed down ... at least that is what I thought. As the Porche passed my window, he up shifted to what I believed to be 4th gear and took off like greased lighting (I looked at the speedo - I had only slowed down to 100 mph) and the older gentleman disappeared into the sunset and horizon.

Never have I driven that fast again and never under estimate a Porche Turbo Carrera !!!

hehe back in 89 I had a 1981 Mazda GLC that had 3rd gear missing.  The car would shake violently between 65 mph and 95mph.  One day, while I was a courier driver in Houston, I found myself on the 610 ship channel bridge.  So at the top I punched the pedal to the metal.  At 65 the wheel started it's normal shaking.  I kept it floored.  By the time I had reached the bottom of the bridge my speedo was pegged (95mph) the shaking had stopped just before I pegged the speedo.  As I got to the bottom I passed 2 18 wheelers in like .7 seconds flat and realized that I was doing well over 100 mph in a death trap of a car (that was suprisingly running very smooth!)  So I let my foot off the gas.

It took a full 20 seconds for the speedo to start dropping hehe!  sure enough at 95 the shaking came back, only this time added by my own shaking at the though of how stupid I had just been.  I would imagine that I was around 120 or 130 mph in that thing.  I was so effing stupid back then!!!!!!!  I'm very lucky to be here now I think.......

OK one more....

The fastest car, well the most fun to drive, that I've ever owned was.. don't laugh.. a 1974 Mercury Capri with the V-6. That little POS was a "poor mans porche" if there ever was one. It wanted to go airborn at about 105, but it was really quick and handled quite well. I miss that car.

Well, while it was no exotic racer, at the worldly age of 17, I reached the speed of approximately 130 mph in a '72 Nova going downhill on a two-lane Arkansas highway on the way to Greers Ferry Lake.  Kept waiting for the hood to fly off, but it never did.  Them 78-series tires kept me on the road safely until I had to chop throttle (no lives put at risk except mine and the girlfriend).
The woody part came later (thanks ex-girlfriend!) after climbing Sugar Loaf mountain

On the track or not on the track?  On the track is was easily a friends old Camero.  Ex Players Light racing car, 100% race with only enough other stuff to keep it "production" so it could race as such.  Production included a radio mounted in the spot where the dash should have been (it was removed but the radio had to be there).  Full roll cage, racing seat, Z-compound tires.... I'll remember his instructions forever when I sat down to drive.  "Watch for the rpm shift light to remind you when to knock it up a gear, it's so loud when it's running you won't be able to even think."... the speed gate had me at 145mph on a rather short front stretch.  My knees and heart confirmed the speed when I pulled it over a couple of laps later.....

Those late 80's 5.0 Mustangs are tremendously quick/fast.

My 72 Camaro, 400 small block, 202 heads was a very quick car, but I wouldnt take it over 120 or so. I dont like driving fast top speed. I like acceleration better.

Nothing like a good muscle car for raw power and accleration IMO.

Gainesville to Tampa at an average speed of 180 mph in his Camaro in the '80s

OK Wobbled….

My brother manages a dealership in Atlanta and although I didn’t drive it, it was a BMW I was riding in, a 5 or I’m guessing more like a 7 series. Big, (shit, HUGE) comfy as hell, loaded, etc… You know, not the insurance salesman wives car DRip drives.

They have a sign at the bottom of the hill they use as a mark outside the dealership they have a contest getting to speed on with trade-ins. It was fast. Scary Fast, but it never felt squirrelly. Quite impressive.

Fastest actually driving was on a 86 Honda Interceptor 1000 at 120. It would go there with ease and didn't seem so bad.

In a car, in the GTP on the way to Blackrock desert outside of Gerlack lately. It’s the flattest space I had ever seen, like the Judas Priest “Point of No Return” LP cover. 115, but it didn’t feel all that smooth at all, and it was for a brief run. As a matter a fact, it was open range, and that means the first cattle hazard in the road I ran across made it down right no fun in the least. Lotsa rpm left, no handling or sense in it making burgers with yer car for sure.

Where people find desert space like that to speed risking only themselves and roaming cattle is beyond me.

Raced a Mustang in my 1987 T-Bird Turbo Coupe on Interstate 84 in New York.  About 110 MPH.  Kinda scary, but that car could move!!  I still wish I had it.  Best drivin car I ever sat in.  Well exception of my dad's Chrysler M300.

Got my brother's 1978 Trans Am (400 4bbl, 4 speed) up to about 105 and the gas was about 3/4 of the way depressed.  I have no idea what the top end of that car is!  He still has it but has totally rebuilt it.  It now puts out about 560 HP.

Hmm.. a tough one..  My healey is pretty quick but I've never had it over about 125 or so..  My 69 El Camino is a big block with a 6 speed and stays glued to the road pretty well with all the suspension and steeering mods (they call em "G machines"  now in the hot roddy crowd)...  Some guys are pushing these old Chevells through the air pretty fast but I still don't feel all that comfortable in it at really high speed... besides... the speedo don't like being pegged for long.

When the jag coupe came out with a 12 cyl a buddy bought one and we topped it out.   That was pretty fast.   I drove a 41 Williys with a hillborn injected 427 in it and it ran 130++ in the quarter but was pretty squirrly.   My 68 RT Charger with 2.75 rear end was pretty fast and would bury the 140 mph speedo but who knows how fast it was going..  lousy power steering tho... wasn't pleasant.   Easy to fix these days.  Heck... even my CHP 90 5 speed Mustang would do 140 or so and it had a state calibrated speedo..  I don't like going 140 in that car even with the better "cop" suspension..

Ya I dont believe the 180 mph average either, especially since no stock Camaro has ever been capable of exceeding 165 mph, not to mention the fact that to average a high speed like that, you have to have been traveling much of the time at a much greater speed.

Also, BMW M5s are governed at 155 for whoever said they went faster than that in one.  Car and Driver just had a great article about why all BMWs have speedometers that read much higher than the car is actually going.  I have read an estimate that said that a current M5 should be able to reach around 180 with governor removed though.

I also dont believe most of the stories about muscle cars from the '60s going much beyond 140 mph.  There are 3 key components to going really fast as in top speed.  (1) gearing, (2) horsepower, (3) and most importantly, aerodynamics.  American muscle cars from the '60s were extremely powerful, even considering that the horsepower figures given for them by the manufacturers were gross horsepower, not the currently used net horsepower.  However, these  cars were designed to  accelerate fast, being more intended for drag racing than for top speed contests.  The aerodynamics for these cars prevent them from going much beyond 140 in most cases without lots of tuning.  Most cars from the '60s and early '70s were geared for quarter mile optimization and not for top end speed.  I saw an article on a Dodge Challenger once that had the 426 hemi in it, rated at 425 hp.  This car was a stripped down one intended for drag racing, and the hemi was one of the few engines that was underrated in hp by its manufacturer, due to insurance concerns.  Even given modern net hp ratings, the hemi would probably show around 400 hp.  This car, despite having all this horsepower and a monster amount of torque as well, topped out at around 118 mph.  Why? because it had a 4.10 rear end and a low geared 4 speed tranny.  This car was extremely fast in a drag race though, 1/4 mile was in 12.9-13.1 sec range with trap speed of around 110 mph if I remember correctly.  Even if this car had much taller gearing though, aerodynamics would probably limit it to around 145 mph.  The fastest car from the '60s, bone stock was reputedly the Shelby Cobra with 427 (if this car could even come close to being considered stock) lol.  Some of the more reliable road tests, indicate that this car could top 150 mph under certain circumstances.  Some Dodge Superbirds, with more attention paid to aerodynamics, and souped up quite a bit, were able to top 160.  And the famed Andy Granatelli, was able to hit 190mph in the flying mile, with some heavily modified cars from the '60s.  These stories about stock Chevelles, GTOs, and other muscle cars from the '60s going 170 mph are largely bogus though.

Just remember, the max number on the speedometer has NOTHING to do with the potential of your car.  I have seen Corvettes with 85 mph on speedometer and other much slower cars with 160 mph.  I cant tell you how many times people have told me, "my car can probably do 150, thats what the speedometer has on it anyhow".  Also, speedometers are quite inaccurate, often lying by as much as 20 mph or more at high speeds.  Motor trend used to show what some of the supercars they tested indicated, and then what they were actually doing as verified by a 5th wheel speed measuring device.  It was quite a revelation.

My own personal fastest was 144 mph indicated in a Ford Mustang GT.  For a long time, I never got to drive a fast car, since my family mostly owned big trucks.  When I got to college a friend let me drive his Toyota Corolla GTS (which was a 2 door sports car version of the corolla).  It wasnt fast, but compared to what I was used to I thought it was.  I got it up to 95 mph before I ran out of road.  I was always wanting to break 100 and I never had a car that could do it until one day a friend let me drive his Audi 5000 to Chicago.  I wasnt impressed with the car around town, as like most German cars, it was geared for highway driving, not stoplight acceleration.  Later that night, a Q45 passed us at an extreme high rate of speed, and I stomped the gas to follow him, curious as to exactly how fast he was going.  Imagine my surprise when the previously soft Audi, nearly snapped my neck into the headrest as we accelerated from 85 mph to 110 mph in a very short amount of time.   The Infiniti was still going faster, and he ran off and left us.  I was reluctant to drive someone elses car any faster than 110 so I backed off.  That was my personal best speed record for a long time.  Then I borrowed my moms Honda Accord once, and took it up to 124 mph which was as fast as it would go.  I often drove it that fast on the Interstate since I knew where all the State Trooper hideouts were.

Later on in college a friend let me borrow his Ford Mustang for a speed test.  I made several passes down a deserted 2 lane highway that had a 3 mile straightaway, to test the brakes, and to make sure the road was clean.  Then I made 3 high speed passes, topping out around 144 on the 3rd one.  The car just didnt have anything else in it, and the last 20 mph was hard won at that. That jibes with the Motor Trend top speed for that year Mustang which was exactly 144 mph.

Those are the fastest that I have ever driven, but the fastest car I have ever driven, although I never had it above 55, would be the BMW 740i.  The C&D top speed for this car is a governed 155 mph.

The fastest car I have ever ridden in was a Lotus Esprit Turbo.  I got a very short ride in it, while my buddy test drove it.  He said he had it up to 160 mph, but I doubt he actually did, although that is around how fast the top speed for it should have been.  While I was in it we were in a neighborhood though, and never got above 50 mph.  This car was exceptionally fast though.  The acceleration to 50 was as violent as I have ever experienced and I have ridden in a number of fast cars including, Camaros, Mustangs, Firebirds, BMWS (including an M3), Mercedes Benz, and numerous others.

With me driving it was my 1987 Red Mustang GT.  This was back around 1988 so it was tuned pretty good with aftermarket goodies for drag racing.

in the 1/4 mile around 12 seconds flat with a 1.6 short time this is with a 4:10 ford motersport rear. From what I can recall my timeslip was around 102 MPH through the traps.

Same car with a 2:73 posirear and nitrous oxide tuned suspension for road racing, I am not relly sure on the top speed .
I know it was over 140MPH because my speedometer was pegged for at least 5 seconds.

It was on NJ Gardenstate parkway heading towards AC
(Atlantic City) in 1989.

New cars are nice; You can drive 120mph (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/prov/images/Provinssi%202002%20087.jpg) all day long without thinking if it's gonna take off from next lane painting or not. Actually it's kinda boring.
With my old Vauxhall Viva '69 every minute speedometer passed 70mph was an adventure. With old, maybe original, Avon tires from seventies you could drive it in slides by using throttle in dry tarmac. With 1,2 liter engine...

1976 Plymouth Gran Fury with 440 police package (former North Carolina State Trooper car).
Speedo went to 140. I had it buried 5-10 mph past that at 3 AM on the Capitol Beltway in 1985. Love the howl of a Chrysler big block.

It was a big, big, big FAST car.

Currently have a 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo SS. The engine is a lame-o 305 with some minor stuff done to it. It's getting swapped out for 350ci/425hp motor in the spring. I've just had all the suspension work done. Had it up to 135mph and it rides as smooth as glass.

 Keep in mind that I did this on a 4 lane highway, late at night, noone around. Be safe! If you have to speed, try to just kill yourself and leave everyone else alone!

fastest i have ever been while driving is about 140 MPH.

this was in my 1970 Duster.  Has a basically stock 340 that is pushing out about 290 horses (i love these guys who say they know this person or whoever that have 327 and 350s with 500 HP+, gimme a frikken break. Any naturally aspirated mouse motor that i have ever seen over 500 HP is not even close to streetable.  And the poor owners have to rebuild the damn things after every race weekend.)

Anyway i raced an older gent in his 98 firebird that was all tricked out and chipped up and the like on a highway south of where i live. (yeah i know it is a dumb thing to do but the highway is in excellent shape and often deserted, and the cops dont mind as long as you keep it off the main streets in town.)

The other fellow beat me by about a half car and he said he was doing 145 or so.

I would rarely ever break 120 MPH in fast acceleration with it because i was running street slicks out back with about 12 psi in them and 5 inch wide pizza cutters up front.  Anyone who has driven a set up like this knows how difficult the car is to control when you let of the gas and the rear tires "balloon."

Extended periods of high speed are out of the question in my ride... it is just not built that way.

Interesting to note that today's 02 Corvette tops out about 170...

"Top Speed Wide-Open Throttle
To simulate high-speed, autobahn conditions, Corvette is subjected to a wide-open throttle test on our five-mile circle track at the Milford Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan. Starting with a full tank of gas, the car is driven flat-out at its 171-mph top speed until the fuel tank is empty - approximately 30 minutes. The test validates the car's ability to withstand extreme thermal loads reliably."

Had my Pajero up to 115mph - was quite smooth too - and not bad for a big mofo 4wd. Been 160mph in a WRX STi, that was nice.

Oh and fastest pinged speed was ~95mph in a 62mph (100km/h) area. My first real test of my laser jammer :D and damn I just about shat myself when my detector went off. Cop followed me for another 4 km's before he got called off somewhere else. Over here thats a big bellybutton fine + loss of license + loss of vehicle for a few months. That was the longest 4k's I ever drove in my life.

But if you really want to know fast, a guy I know has a 2001 Diablo, 90mph in second gear alone!

Probably my Ram Air firebird + vortec supercharger.

I had it to about 160 mph indicated, which is a couple mph faster than what it is rated for stock, and it was in 5th gear, not 6th.  Very solid up to 145 mph or so too.  God knows how accurate the speedo is at the higher speeds, so I'll safely say I've gone 150 mph.

I loved GM v8 cars, 65 MPH and 1400 rpm in 6th gear.  Such fun on the freeway.

When I started this thread, what I meant by fastest was fastest accelerating, guess I shoulda been more clear. The ride in that Ruf Porsche reminded me of a car a friend had in high school. Actually, the one and only thing they have in common was the ruthless acceleration. The kinda acceleration where your neck muscles strain like crazy to keep your head off the headrest, then you finally relent and lay back in the seat and enjoy the rocket ride. :)

My friends car was an old wore out '79 Z28. The doors were dragging like crazy, dash cracked, etc. (you get the picture) But he only bought it for one thing, and that was to embarass all the kids around here who's parents bought them new Mustang GT's (this was the mid eighties when GT's and Buick Grand Nationals were king). Welp, he started out by taking the factory engine out and chunking it. He then installed a very hot engine out of his dads late model dirt track car. Then an NOS system, changed up some gears, etc. and this thing was a beast. I still remember one saturday night 4 of us guys riding in it (we were all about 180 lbs apiece) and he did a 20 mph kick with the nitrous on, and well, beer flew everywhere, both rear wheels broke traction. You couldn't hear the tires spinning over that screaming V8. But then they hooked up and we were at warp speed in no time. :) Skeeery fast.

As far as top speed, I used to own a '77 280zx. This was the first year of the 5 speed. This car wasn't much on acceleration but on the interstate it would really stretch out. I prolly had it up in the 130 mph range at one time or another.

hblair,

My Dad had an authentic 930 RUF for a couple of years. At the time (mid '80s) they were one of the fastest cars in North America. I think the HP was well over 400, 500+ with the twin turbo if memory serves.

The fastest I've ever driven in that car was ~140 MPH for a short period of time. I wasn't tracking the speedometer too closely - I was on a straightaway at a race track in that car with an instructor in the car with me (My Dad said the only way I'd every be allowed to drive the car was if I went to a couple of driving schools with him and the car - people who have experience with rear engine/rear drive cars know why this is so important).

It was a wise move on my Dad's part. I learned about why high speed anywhere but a race track is very unwise, and got alot of the 'driving and turning at high speeds' out of my system. After those schools I didn't really drive it that much, and when I did I didn't really 'wind it up'.

There were many many 'fake' 930 RUF cars in the U.S. If memory serves (that was a long time ago) one of the ways to spot the 'real deal' was to look at the intake on the air dam.

It was a cool car though. The only car I ever saw on the road that was faster at the time was a nonlegal 935, in the Cupertino, CA. area in the mid-late '80s.

I topped 195km/h in a Bilbao-Sabadell trip, in the first weekend of September '01.

I did it after realizing that I had kept the speed over 180km/h for a lot of time without noticing I was running that fast...

That was my first trip in that car (my previous one was a Suzuki Swift). I thought I was running at no more than 140km/h...so when I looked at the speedometer and saw "180" I thought "WTF, lets see how much can I get"...and that was when I topped 195.

All that in a Opel Astra of 1997...speed readings all are indicated.

Acceleration..  probly the willy's.... a 10 second car in the right hands.   My Healey will run low 12's with street tires and closed exhaust..  it pulls pretty well.   I will be glad to give deja a ride in it if he comes by.   starts right up and is is street legal.. sorta.

lazs, ya got a Healy? What, a Sprite with a Ford 289? (jest guessin) I used to have a 1963 AH 3000. Paid 700 dollars for it, rebuilt the motor and used it for my daily driver for years. Not very fast, but alot of fun to drive, and that big six had a ton of torque. Sold it to liquidate assets before my second marriage ended in a divorce.

K Laz, I'd like to check it out. The hot setup back in The Day was a Sprite with a 289 in it because it was practically a bolt-in swap for the stock 4 cylinder motor-mount wise. Of course you still had to weld on the cross member and rear mounts, but it was a relatively easy swap and man o man those little Sprites were quick. Well, for The Day, anyway.

I don't know about fastest accelerating but the scariest accelerating I ever did was while backing down an extremely long and crowded launching ramp at Lake Oroville and having my breaks go soft on me. I was in a 74 Scout, manual transmission, and I was pumping that brake pedal like a hillbilly fiddle player on Meth while trying to jam it into any forward gear I could find. Got stopped right at the last moment, but had to endure the dirty looks from the other boaters who thought I'd backed down the ramp that fast on purpose.

Hblair, no troll, just sayin. You jogged the ol memory of cruising El Camino Blvd. back in The Day. The hot rods in 1967 might not have been as fast as the Hondas and Acuras are today, but they certainly looked and sounded faster, plus had more character.

elf... trust me on this... putting a 289/302 in a sprite is MAJOR surgery..  nothing from the sprite  drivetrain can be used.   You better be a good fabricator and a welder and have a good imagination...  It is not impossible... far from it.. friend of mine has a bug eye sprite with all late model vette suspension and a 468 injected crate HEMI in  and it looks pretty stock except for the narrowed vette wheels.   As to the old muscle cars..... things have changed with the muscle cars....

today...unless one of the old muscle cars is just some pristene resto job... they all are better than they were.   Suspension and drivetrain components have made huge leaps and the aftermarket caters to a group of "Gmachine" hot rodders that have very deceptive muscle cars.... All the good stuff from the sixties, sound, looks torque etc. but..... with new car handling and top end..   for instance... My SS el camino was a 350 hp 396 4 speed car...  A wicked cool car in it's day but.... you can't even rebuild a 396 anymore without stumbling onto 400+ DYNO hp these days... more is easy...  The six speed I put in it means that the first 4 gears are like having a 400+ hp car with 4.56 gears and then... shift to 5th and have 3.31's   6th makes the car have about a 2.75 final drive.    2 1/2 exhaust make it sound better than when new... radial tires, bilstein shocks, high rate roll bars and springs... adjustabel, boxed control arms, fast ratio steering.... It looks like 1969 but...

for rip... in the 396.. followed a bmw going to fort bragg.   lot of tight turns but... they were uphill..   I could corner with him but he couldn't accelerate uphill with me.   He was working a lot harder than me plus..... i looked cooler doing it and didn't make all them funny noises.

I lived for a long time about 20 miles N. of Eureka on the coast.

And when I get back to the U.S.A./CA. I'm going to get a house on the water at Sea Ranch for at least 4 weeks. 8)

No (scuba) diving for me there though. Growing up there I like free diving more, especially in that area.

Wulfie, I free dive there too, but at 50 it's getting tougher to stay on the bottom like I used to.

Anyone remember the old Datsun 2000 sportscar? I believe they made a 1600 also.
Friend of mine had 2 2000's. Only one was running at any point in time though. He would just keep swapping parts back and forth keeping one on the road. I drove the puppy once. Was a very fun ride and surprisingly quick.

A friend at work just got a 1600.  Man that thing is small.
