Doc "87 Les Paul Sunburst standard playing Death":D

Yes,
He gave lessons to Steve Vai, Hurt Hammet, and some other kick bellybutton guitar players from the 80's.
silver surfer baby!
-
Of course we know who Joe is... Last year's G3 tour with Joe and John Petrucci was increadible. Talk about speed and technique. Could never get into Via's music.. sounds like me playing as fast as I can after a bottle of Merlot.
-
You guys are like.... old.

If your gonna post the spidy gay dance and least include the "your are gay song" midi with it.
-
Joe is one of my fav's.
I even did a cover of Flying in a Blue Dream and also one of One Big Rush
-
Well Stevie Ray is gone......but BB and Lucille and Clapton are still around........thank God for that
Hajo
-
The Phone call, Strange, I Believe...gotta love it.
-
and Jeff Beck, and Eddie, and Eric Johnson
-
Joe Satriani is a mechanic. yawn ;)
-
He sux,,no more,no less,,,,,,yawn yawn.
Kerry King rules:cool:
-
let me hear you guys' playing...
I mean, since you're experts and all I'm sure you can blow him away.
-
He's technically an excellent guitarist but I just don't like his sound...Surfin' With The Alien and all that.
(Nor did I like attending an "Alcatraz" Concert and seeing that Yngwie had been replaced with Steve Vai...hate that guy's sound too.)
-
http://shopping.yahoo.com/shop?d=product&id=1921149019&clink=dmmu-ks/Sample_This_
Not really a guitar solo-oriented album, but i do play all of it :)
Some jazz stuff on the intro/ourto tracks, the rest is funk/r&b stuff
-
I did listen to him, and Steve Vai for a while. Kind of went through a phase back in the Surfing w/ alien days. In the ned. it all souded very sterile (for lack of a better term). They are very skilled, but it all lacked the character and emotion I find in the music of others. I think that is why they aren't more popular. Sure, any guitar player would want their skills, but I'm not sure they want to sound like them. Awesome, yet bland if that's possible.
Clapton did some electric blues stuff a few years ago, that was awesome. SRV, great stuff. These are the guys off the top of my head, there are others. What makes them great is they really pull the emotion from their gut, and translate it into music. It's more than just playing super fast with perfect skill.
Could I play that way, heck no. Do I have a right to criticize, as a cunsumer, I sure do.
-
Technical ability is about 30% in playing guitar, or most music...the rest is taste. A technician can only go so far before what he plays becomes stale. I used to like Satriani, a little, but all those 80s guys are about is speed and cold sounding solos. Give me Stevie Ray or Adam Jones any day.
-
ok ok.. I have to agree.
technical ability only goes so far.. the feel, the soul.. that's where it's at and that's what made guys like Jimi and SRV great IMO.
I hate steve vai's stuff but I appreciate his technical skills.
I try to play all styles to improve my own.
-
Stevie Vai was absolutely fantastic when he was playing Frank Zappa's music. Once he started playing his own, he immediately lost me :(
-
"another lie" is what you played on?
I don't hear much guitar on my end...
but I'll grant you the benefit of the doubt and assume you know what you're doing with a guitar.
here are a few of my cover tunes
guitar stuff (http://www.nick-tucker.com/_pages/music.htm)

I played on all of it, and wrote all the music. If you want to hear guitar solo stuff, try the "intro" and "outro" samples
-
Kerry King rules, rules trash talk
lol.
Well Slayer is great and you gotta love Jeff Hanneman live.
Another great player I love is Zack Wylde. I heard he doesnt' altpick and every note is a down stroke. He's faster than most alt picking masters like Slayer and has style. Check out the song "Speedball" by Black Label Society.
-
Wlfgng - just listened to "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" - VERY nice :) Did you rip the changes by ear, or read them? I wish you'd taken more of your own solo though, you're obviously capable :)
I used to do "Good Bye Pork Pie Hat", which made it a cover of a cover
-
by ear and thanks.. mucho appreciated.
I decided to do that song because I had just purchased a POD preamp and had this great JB sound in it. In fact, all the guitar stuff is straight off the POD.. great hardware IMO.
I was planning on doing some collaboration with Black Sheep but my CD burner has kicked the bucket.
Zack Wylde is a kick.. loved him in 'Rock Star' shooting the highway signs from the tour bus.. lol
no one slings hair as well as he.
-
Steve Howe
John McLaughlin (sp)
-
I had a chance to work with Zack Wylde on a solo album a few years back, but he had a certain "substance dependency problem" that made it a less than attractive proposition :(
Midnight Target - RIGHT ON with McLaughlin! Out of all the "Note Monsters" he's the only one who plays with real fire & passion, imho :)
"Technique doesn't come into it - I deal in emotions"
Jimmy Page
-
McLaughlin no doubt!
a real guitar player.
only guy I can think of that played a scalloped fretboard...talk about control.
Howe, I used to like, but too technical and not a whole lot of feel IMO.
I have not doubt that mr Wylde was like that.. hell.. he toured with Ozzy right ?
---
RedAnt.. just listened to the guitar stuff.. very sweet. Killer tone.
I'd like to hear the rest of those two.
wish I could write.. sigh...
-
Here's a guilty pleasure for all you 'nose in the air' guys, Neil Shone.
Never bought a Journey album, but he was very good.
-
I dunno' about 'nose in the air'.. I think musicians just have different tastes/views of music than non-musicians.
-
true.
My best bud & college roommate was considered the best guitarist in the dorms. I was an audience of 1 to many many jam sessions and impromptu concerts. Everything I know about guitars I learned from him.
He did some studio work in LA, did background music for a Hanover Bank commercial, then he became an accountant.... go figure!?
-
Mark Knopfler is pretty good, but c'mon, who compares to Jimi?
-
man who they call the jimmy of our time
Vernon Reid
he plays from jazz to metal
-

No one, is who. Jimi is in a class entirely by himself :)
Vernon is a damn good guitarist, but man, i HATE his sounds! Way too processed for my taste.
Incidentally, Vernon and I played in the same band, though at different times. Anyone remeber "Defunkt"? And now my old drummer from "Sample This", Curtis Watts, is playing drums with Vernon Reid's band "Mask". It's a small world.
-
i kind of like gary moore and jeff healey too.
oh and dont forget tom scholz from boston.
i like alot of music couldnt tell ya my favorite,
but if i had to pick mabie david gilmour from floyd.
(the old old stuff) JC:cool:
-
I love Gilmores style.. even though technically he isn't a giant.
Tom Scholtz.. I give him credit for the sound and electronics that he is a genuis with.
Vernon is too processed IMO but he plays with feeling.
jeff healy.. hard to compare.. what a wack style tho
Musicians change careers for money if you ask me..
many many talented musicians never make it big because of the fact that it's a 'right time, right place' and 'willing to do what it takes' kinda business.
Just because you're talented doesn't mean squat in the biz.
btw I'm the IT manger for our town.. figures eh.
-
Satriani is cold, a few he warms but overall cold. Vai I don't care for.
Listen to an acoustic cut or to by John Mclaughlin. Like Knopflers stuff. Like the Jeff Healey/Knopfler cut.
Santana is so much better in person than on a alblum.
Robin Trowers early stuff ROCKED.
Stevie was good, saw him with Jeff Beck. Goooood show.
The best in my view ??
There's a lot out there faster.
There's a lot out there louder.
There's a lot out there with "chops"
But NOBODY plays sweeter or can phrase better than David Gilmore. All of his solos' have a begining, a transition, and an ending. They make a statement. They have a reason.
Nobody better.
He plays with "holes"
It's not "just" the notes, but the spaces inbetween that make a passage sweet. Ebb and flow...
He's the master.
-
Question for you guitar gurus.Who played lead on the early Alice Cooper stuff?I wasn't a huge Cooper fan but the guitar work still stands out in my mind.

Actually "Surfing with the Alien" was his best album imo...hmm, that was actually back when they still made albums too!

Frodo! Long time no speak, bro! :)
Alice Cooper stuff was played by two guys - Steve Hunter & Dick Wagner. Two GREAT guitarists, they were part of the "Bob Ezrin Band" - anything Bob produced, they played on. For the best example of their amazing dual guitar work, i recommend "Rock & Roll Animal", by Lou Reed. A "double live album" back in the day, now available on one CD - smokin stuff!

Drea, buy the G3 DVD.
Via removed me from my bar stool in my brothers basement in the final "rif-off".
I think it was 2 notes, lol. Unreal.
He palyed the Hilton indoors last year in G3. No security, just a open casino hall. It's just not fair living here.

THE guitarist of all times is Eddie Van Halen.
Besides Jimi Hendrix, I can't recall any other guitarist that can be immediately recognized from the little piece of playing. Well, Yngwie Malmsten can be recognized, but besides the terrible speed, his solos are nothing but playing scale up and down with fingers running in a speed of light.
Big to Eddie for winning the cancer!

I agree.David Gilmore would be broke if he got paid by the note. But NOBODY does so much by playing so little. He never played a fast lick in his life cause he didnt NEED to :)
Alex Liefson.Another great one. Flying in a blue dream wasnt the greatest wax of all time. But it does have several really good tunes. Eddie Van is Incredible but hardly the best.Robin Trower "Bridge of sighs" Ahhhhhhh
-
DrDea, you forgot Francis Goya!
Anyone remember the Japanese heavy band from the mid 80's. I've tried to remember the band name but can't. Band guitarist was elected the "guitarist of the year". He was fast and had good solos. Anyone?
-
Do you guys feather your hair?
-
My vote is for Slash.
-
Mmmmm....fine call.I forgot Slash. His solo on November rain is sweet :) Kinda Gilmore esq.Sweet child of mine...Yup Slash is another hair waver.Love the hat too I made a wav file done to On the road again in honor of the PNG system in AW.I will have to dig that out.
Saw Zack Wyild at Oxfest last year. That guy is something. He IS the king of hair tossing no contest.
-
On outro is that an ESS335? Sounds Gibsony to me ;)
-
SLASH!! Jeez, I thought we were talking about guitarists! :p
-
There's gotta be some soul in the music. Lightening fast scales are nothing more but technical speed. The players feelings should be reverberated through his instrument. Scholz of Boston is one example. One can see the classical background tastes in his playing. BB and Lucille, Clapton exhibit that kind of music everytime they pick up the guitar, so did Stevie Ray. Big deal some jerk can play technically fast...as the old commercial said "Where's the Beef?" They're technicians......nothing more!

If you guys get a chance to, pick up some Clutch. They're a Maryland band that I've been listening to for a hundred years or so. I'm not into the "solo" playing guitar player, but more into how the guitar fits with the rest of the band, and these guys are insane. And I have to mention Quicksand for balls to the wall drum playing, and Tool for pure anger.
-
you're old!
-
Never heard of clutch.Where they outta?Im in Hagerstown myself.....Let us also not forget honorable mention to the Motor City Madman and Brian May.
-
Yeah I am pretty old wolfgang. Not sure from where in Maryland Clutch is from, but they used to have a huge banner behind them of the Maryland "coat of arms", when I've seen them play at the Troc or Electric Factory in Philly. I guess they fit more into the "hardcore" arena of rock, though they're neither Metal nor Hardcore. Very bluesy though, and alot of off-time stuff, which sounds great with their drummer who just sits right in the groove and hammers away. Very cool.
-
My mp3.com site: mp3.com/dyonisos (http://www.mp3.com/dyonisos)
Any other AH'ers on mp3.com?
While I can appreciate what they're doing, the guitar players who just display blazing speed and nonstop proof of technical virtuosity in constant search of the "wow" factor are lower on my personal list of good players than the ones who are willing to play at normal speeds for the sake of the music.
:D

There was a great all-acoustic album by Mclaughlin, trying to remember the name. Got it. It's "My Goals Beyond". Worth a listen if you can find a copy. It has some sitar and violin (might Jerry Goodman on violin, not sure), and interesting percussion.
-
jus' joking there envy.... sigh.. troll gone unoticed again.

Alex Lifeson :)
-
as per biggles comment:
silence is THE most important part of a 'toolbox' of notes.
-
Yea.............Alex Liefson Acoustic trees intro :D
-
I agree Biggles. For me Rock has stopped being about showcasing some guitar slinger's chops and more about how each instrument interacts with and compliments all of the other instruments, including the vocal instrument. It has also become about trying to find that special new thing in music, because a lot of it has become stale. I hate the radio and its redundancy. The same ten songs over and over. And the record companies are worried about the internet killing their sales. Bah! They should worry about themselves and the direction they push their industry. Sorry, not going to rant. Pullin Chalks!
-
la villa strangiata has a better acoustic intro imo
-
Naw Wolfgang. I got yer joke. I was just joking about myself there too.
I must say....I am a Rush Nerd. Listen to Exit Stage Left at work almost every day.
-
Big Rush fan. I went to see them in Saratoga, New York on July 7th (SPAC). I sat/stood/was situated towards the front, and to the left near Alex's amps. It was amazing.
-
ok I admit it..
even though Rush's guitar stuff is relatively simple.. I really like Alex's stuff.
it's why I covered them :)
purley from a guitar player standpoint.. I like playing Rush because Alex plays so 'full'. I can play a rush song on my guitar.. everyone knows it instantly..
some other stuff isn't so recognizeable (just the guitar part) or it takes two or more guitar players to play.
Rush guitar stuff just sounds so fat and I have this great Alex patch on the POD.. pretty close to the 'real thing'
-

Hey, can I get the settings? I bought POD 2.0 about a month ago and am on the lookout for interesting patches. I've always liked Lifeson's sound. Maybe you could upload it to the POD patch exchange at http://www.line6.com?
POD's are great. I saw 38 Special last month, and they used NO stage amps (except for the bass amp). Just POD's with wireless systems, run directly into the house system. Sounded good. Also, we opened for Blue Oyster Cult back in January, and all of those guitar players had POD's mounted on top of their amps (Crate amps!)
-
POD rules for recording IMO.
I have amp simulators for the following:
Marshal (65-today probably 50different types including plexi, etc)
Fender (same as above)
Hi watt (30 or so)
mesa boogie (tons, can't remember how many)
matchless,
vox,
tubes, solid state.. you name it
then I have 'artist's' patches...
satriani,rush,metallica,hendrix,clapton,johnson,vai, etc etc..
btw vai's sound sux lol
be glad to send them to ya.
I tried posting them on the POD site.. didn't work :(
send me an email at nick-tucker@attbi.com and I'll send them to ya.

What kind of stuff do you guys have?
Pre '75 Orange 2x12 Combo amp(by far the loudest amp I've ever used, ok sound quality)
Les Paul Studio (with heavy gauge strings)
Rat distortion pedal (distortion set very low for best string attack)
Ran through an old 70's Ampeg half-stack for ten years that was just super loud and had an incredible sound, but let my old bandmates borrow it when I moved to Brooklyn and lost contact when I left.
With just this simple setup I 've gotten a bigger, meatier sound and better tonal range than any Marshall I've ever played through.
I do not like over an processed sound, but I do like a very large amount of distortion, so I found a good in between somewhere along the way with a combination of old tube amps and newer Gibsons.
-
LOL I've got a 71 Gibson J45 and....it uses air :D
Mini Marshal Stack for the strat.

!!!!!!!!!!!! JIMI RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 and i'm only 16 so don't be calling me old:p and the 80's sucked so bad it puts music to shame all around
but i listen to system of a down and rage against the machine and there both pretty damn good

Don't get me started ;)
'68 Fender Telecaster Custom, natural wood finish
'94 Fender Custom Shop copy of a '62 Strat, powder blue
Gibson J45
Fender '57 Champ
Fnder "no-name" single 12'' cone Tweed
Fender "blackface" Tremolux head, modified to where the "bright switch" flips between two circuits: '57 Bassman/65 Marshall Plexi
Seymour Duncan "Convertible" variable-power amp: 5 - 100 Watts
Fender "blackface" Super Reverb
Gibson GA-10 10-watt tube practice/recording amp
Just say NO to solid state amps! :)
"Vox" wah pedal
Electro-Harmonix "Small Stone" Phase shifter
oh, and a fully equipped pro studio, including a fully-blown ProTools Mix+ rig ;)
-
System of a Down is one of the worst excuses for a band ive ever heard. Ill take all that "80's music thats sucks" over that crap any day. Good music has come from every era, shut up and enjoy it. Even that crap you listen to.:D
-
ammo.. he's awesome. I could only aspire to play like that.. 3 parts at once.. sheesh
have an Eric Johnson instructional video showing the Atkins style...sigh
NO to solid state amps :)
Fender deluxe reverb (tweed) with the POD and a Jeff Beck Strat.
all kinds of precessors I never use any more... same with a zoom 9150 rack mount.
I use gage 12 strings. double humbucker in the neck position, BigFatty picks (about 1/4 inch thick). Gun metal whammy block ,roller nut. very fat neck with gibson frets, whammy block is locked down (by me).
(oh, and a Korg wavestation synth , Cakewalk and Fruity Loops, BBE sonic maximizer, POD, POD editing software w/amp sims)
the amp is a little bluesy for some live stuff so I use the POD and Fender twin with 2 12's. punchy and the POD modifies it to be pretty warm when needed.. but it's damn loud! hehe
got rid of:
Marshal 4x12's (late model)
Fender bassman
some weird VOX that was noisy as hell
Mesa Boogie (the 60 watt blonde stack)
(I miss that almost as much as I miss the stacked blonde!)
pedals galore
small amps galore
(not gonna tell you what happened to MY 61 tele :( )

Well, one the way to a gig one fine day i stopped by a friends' place in downtown NYC to borrow an amp for the gig. I double parked the car, locked the doors, ran upstairs for 2 minutes max. When i came back down the trunk was popped and my beautifull L5 was gone, vanished :(

Man, you guys have some good stuff. Red Ant, I guess studio work of some sort is your career? The only other guitar I want, besides a nice acoustic, is an ES335(?), the big old Gibson rockabilly guitars. I love them. Been spending my cash on my 50's car, and not currently in a band, so music equipment has gone on the wayside.
-
Vernon Reid is processed?? Fastest fingers, I've ever heard.
NOW, with Pink Floyd being my fav. band of all time, he is tops right now.
Eddie needs to go to Cabo San Lucas and figure out what he wants in life. He is up there.
Robert Cray and BB King are two hellified guitarists. Guitar Shorty is one of the best I've seen as well and HE NEVER GETS MENTIONED.
Vernon Reid is BY FAR the most UNDERRATED guitarists out there.

Hehehe, when I work with artists i hate (not a common occurrence, but does happen sometimes) i just try to find ANY redeeming qualities in the music & focus on those ;) As for great career - well, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they REALLY loved the work itself. Its unsteady pay (freelance), prima donna artists, no real set schedule, and the hours can be long and ardurous. But i do LOVE what i do, so i put up with all the BS that comes with the territory :)

The great thing about him is that he creates Melodies that fit the song perfectly,
and are unique to that song - your average Guitar jock will just play the scales
he practiced over any song...
Alex Lifeson? Well, Rush is one of my fav bands, but the guy that really keeps
it all together is Neil Peart, the Drummer, nobody can sound bad
with a drummer like that... ;)

Jimi page..??? see the thread on over-rated guitarists.
Gilmour rules
I'd give my.. just about anything to have a drummer like Pert.

Okay I can't take it anymore!!! Why has nobody mentioned the following names in the list of great guitar players?
Django Reinhardt
Joe Pass
Wes Montgomery
Step out of your rock and roll minds for a minute and listen to these cats. I will guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Someone had mentioned earlier in the thread about AHers on MP3.com? We aren't there yet but will be soon. In the mean time have a listen at http://www.jumpjones.com

Well Monk I usually try to hold out as long as I can. But one can only stand so much of...."Eddie Van Halen is the best f*%cking guitar player that ever lived man!!!...that guy rocked!!!" :D Sooner or later someone has to put a stop to them and suggest that they listen to all the guys that know how to play the chords with the numbers in them :D :D

Jeff Martin - The Tea Party
Guitar, Esraj, Gibson Harp Guitar, Hurdy Gurdy, Santur, Sarod, Saz, Sitar, Tambura, Tar, Ud...anything with strings he plays and plays well. They don't come much more talented than him. :)

ALot of Jimmy Page's SOLOS are not too memorable, but the development of his songwriting, along with the rest of the guys contributions to zeppelin songs, Plant, Bonham, and JPJ really made LEd Zep what it was. Easy pleasy Lemon Squeasy, is almost always the best route to music. You guys have heard Stravinsky's Rites of Spring. There are some incredibly simple sections in this piece that move in ways no other music can. Now I'm not comparing LZep to classical music, but sometimes less is more. I could play all of Zeps songs in Hschool, as well as Metallicas and all that other stuff, but I guess the way they played thse songs could not be duplicated by me or the other guys I played with.

Anyone remember the Japanese heavy band from the mid 80's. I've tried to remember the band name but can't. Band guitarist was elected the "guitarist of the year". He was fast and had good solos. Anyone?
After having a nostalgic evening by listening my very old c-casettes(!), I found it! It was LOUDNESS and the guitarist was Akira Takasaki.

Not even close to eddie, jimi or other legends, but still very good guitarist.
