Could the US have won the naval war against Japan with just destroyers?
The US built 73 or so modern DDs in the 30s.
Add up the Benson/Gleaves(96?)
the Fletchers(182?)
the Sumners(58?)

400 or so destroyers not counting the old ones and the Gearings which came on very late...

Well all they needed where the 3-400 DEs in the atlantic... I didnt count them.

Uhmm no.

But if Pearl Harbor had worked out for the Japanese and the CVs were there as well we might have had a chance to find out.....
