1) You guys are going to agree on the name before it's released, right? No funny "Petition to call the Emily some thing more feminine" threads, right?
2) Perk it!

WOW, what a beautiful plane, thank you Mitsu for sharing that with us.
Clearly it would take some doing on HTC's part but what a wounderfull adation to AH she would be. Not only is she one of the most famious of all Japanese planes from WW2, but an extreamly capable adation, and the Japanese planeset would gaine so much from hear adation.
-
Thanks Mitsu.
I really, really want this aircraft in AH.
Do you have any diagrams for the Emily as you did for the Ki-67?

I have a lot of Emily's interior photos and field of fire pics etc etc... :)
I'll scan them later.

Let's add a few things ;) to Mitsu excellent post :)
-
Source is of course the TAIC Manual
-
butch2k,
it is awesome info, thank you. :)
-
Cool
I wish to use for Rescue Mission.:D
-
ZEKE, yeah flying-boat is really good addition for new version i think. it is completely new unit from sea, it makes new feature for Aces High. and also it can use for multi-role sortie. :)
-
How could Pyro say no to such a wonderful plane, and with such good information as posted by Mitsu?!
I'm going to have to point out this thread to him at the con. I've been begging him for the Emily for over a year now.
Great thread Mitsu!
-
Ok you can have your Emily, but I want my Catalina next! :D

Wonder if HTC can read Japanese:confused: I shure cant. I would like to read those specs and diagrams. I love that sort of thing.
-
Very nice material Mitsu! Thanks :)
Wow what a big friggin target that plane would be though. It would be almost impossible to miss.
-
Yes but it was preportadly very strong, and capable of asorbing some damage, and WOW I heard it bristled with guns but Man Look at all those gun positions! Great stuff Mitsu TY again.
-
I had assumed that because it was a flying boat it would have no belly defense, much like the Ki-67. However I see in those diagrams that only the B-17 and B-24 would have more verticle downward fire. Of course in the B-17 and B-24 they are .50 cals and on the Emily they are 7.7mms, but anything is better than nothing.
I want this bird even more now.
-
Hummmmm! I wonder where the Japanese got the idea to make that type of frame? Looks alot like a Lockheed flying boat that went missing in the Pacific before the war.
What was the name of that flying boat? The China Clipper?
-
Swager,
Nope. If you read the development history of the H8K you'll see that it is an independantly developed design. It is considered to be the single biggest jump in flying boats ever. You don't get that by making a copy of somebody else's design.
Also look at the Short Sunderland. Was that also a copy of the Pacific Clipper? The fact of the matter is that Flying Boats being, well, boats places heavy limits on the types of fuselages that are appropriate. Big flying boats all tend to look something like the Pacific Clipper / H8K / Sunderland.

Some pics are from H8K2-L "Seiku" (Transporter), but its cockpit is almost the same as H8K2 Emily.

(H8K2-L's engineman's room)
-
Mitsu you are a star :) :) :)
I have been trying to think of a new plane to make for my portfolio and with all this info you have just posted all the research is basically done.
It is just to good an opertunity to miss!
Who said playing games is a waste of time as again the AH community is helping me with work :)
Plus its a really cool plane.
I'll post a piccy when its finished
Thanks again Mitsu :D :D :D
-
I'm gonna show them from now.
These photos are H8K2 Emily S/N "426" which is now displayed at Museum of Maritime Science, Tokyo. Of course photos are taken after the war.

This photo shows cockpit, a ceiling of this room, and each crew's position (pilot, co-pilot, commander, engineman, front radio operator, voluntary navigator...etc)
-
OK, I gotta take a sleep, upload more interior photos later. :)
-
I have been hoping that the H8K2 was on HTCs "to do" list, but was afraid that there simply might not be enough information about the H8K out there for them to do it even if they wanted to.
Mitsu and butch2K have shown that is not the case. I really hope HTC adds this one at some point. The big bombers do take a huge amount of work, but it would be a wonderful addition to AH.
-
Yes They do man what a wounderfull adation she would be, Thanks again Mitsu I have never seen pics of her like these:)
-
wonderful thread.
looks like this plane is on the list for Target Raubul
-
I'm starting to like this plane!!! Keep the pics coming Mitsu. :D
My guess is only it ups from ports and no three plane formation.
-
GRUNHERz,
Yeah, I think so too. they would have a problem like TBM's 3-ship formation issue. this flying-boat could do a level-bombing though. :)
But this plane should be able to take off from a fleet, because Japanese fleet often supported H8K2 Emily.
-
Take off from fleet..
Hey thats pretty interesting possibilty. How bout this HTC adds a seaplane tender to the fleet, and the survival of that ship determines availabity of all seaplanes from the fleet.
That would be cool and add more interest to the game! :D
-
In one of those pics I definately see wheels, Are they internal and suitable for landing on runways or is it a cart used to move it around whilst on dry land? There are a lot of fields at sea level and it would be cool to be able to drive up a ramp and land on the field, would make it a lot more practical to land sorties. Also any depth charge info? Subs may still be on 'the list' and I can see this being a fantastic ASW aircraft.
I'll put my $0.02 in, this is a truly beautiful aircraft and I want one.

a large photo shows engineman (left) and direction finder man's (right) position.
2 small photos of the left bottom side show a duct, and crew's bench for a rest.
The right upper photo shows a top hatch and its ladder. this hatch is also used as a reserve turret.
The right middle photo shows No.1 fuel tanks.
The right bottom photo shows crew's bed and bench for a rest.
and you can go to the rear room through the hatch. :)
-
This is so cool, it is like a mini series, whear each day we are intruduced to a new part of the plane:)
-
Every Navy had seaplane tenders, and from those tenders operated all type's of seaplanes, also seaplane bases were built in and around loggons and sheltered coastal areas, as well as coastal air bases. In Ah this could mean, Port's, CV groops, and coastal Airbases, as well as coastal V bases.
Another point is look at the back of the CA in the standard MA fleat. their is a Float plane launcher promentaly modeled, while it certainly would not suport and Emily, I can think of A bunch of cool planes it would. So the CV is sunk u can still up a AR 196, or a Jake:)

-
Ummm.... are there enough 'jump to' commands for all the gun positions in the Emily? HTC may have to fake it a bit to keep the number of gunner positions within the game limits.

2 questions
from befor could it land on land?
where is the head/bathroom?
-

No, it can't.
-
brady did you go to school with hitech?
:)
-
This is great Mitsu. Thanks.
I think that the H8K2 would be flyable from ports and coastal airbases as PT Boats can spawn from those points. Coastal VHs might be an interesting option as well.
I don't think that the H8K2 sould be usable from fleets. Who'd use a carrier based bomber when they could take this instead?
I do think that the H8K2 should have the 3 aircraft formation option.
Mitsu,
Do you know how much ammo was carried for each of the gun positions?
-
Zigrat, ah no.....Why do you ask?
Can't wait Mitsu:)

A right photo is looking behind from the middle of tail room.
Maybe you can see chain in this photo, it brings cartridge clips for tail turret.
Other 3 photos show the open mouth of tail bottom turret, and hatch and toilet.

At least...
Nose 20mm turret - it had 7 drum magazines (45 rds each).
Top 20mm turret - it had 10 drum magazines (45 rds each).
Sponson 20mm turret - unknown...
Tail 20mm turret - it had 9 or 10 drum magines (45 rds each).
Rear bottom 2 x 7.7mm turrets - they had 6 drum magazines (total), but size is unknown...
I would research more about this.
-
I guess that sponson turrets and top turrets shared drum magazines.
-
Obtaining the Magizen capacities for the 7.7mm weapons would not be to dificult, what of the storage for the other 7.7mm guns throught the boat?
Are you shure the the Waist and top turet shared Magizines, that is not a lot of 20mm ammo between the 3 guns, much less than the tail and nose.
TY again Mitsu.
Their has got to be somwone around who served on these Planes, to bad we can't just go over for lunch and say hey, how many 20mm Magizines did you have in the back:)
-
All i can say is ...
wow...
will someone from HTC post here...?
-
Elegant work and thread. Emily and Catalina with seaplane tender and other mobile basing would sure add an interesting new dimension to Aces High.
However, as in real life, they would be awfully big slow targets and couldn't be expected to survive long in the Main Arena. They'd do better in scenarios but even then would have to be deployed judiciously (gee, maw, don't he talk purty...what'd he say? huh?).
-
Halo,
H8K2 would be significantly more survivable than the Lancaster. Its faster, better armed, climbers way, way, faster and was probably tougher.
The H8K is in a totally different league than the PBY Catalina.
-
I got some color photos of Emily.
but I'm tired of scanning. :p
-
Well when u recover, I will be happy to see them:)
-
I would also love to see colour pictures of emily, This thread is really, really good, Helped me alot thx :D

Here is some color movies of an Emily. I can e-mail it in better quality if you like.

Awesome!
Mitsu
Would love to see this girl in AH. Its been one of my dreams for a LONG time to fly a Emily flying boat online.
Bomber, sub hunter, search & rescue, patrol this one does it all with style & she has teeth also!
-
The end of that gun camera footage is painful to watch. The size of the splash and explosion when the Emily hits the water was huge.
-
Ya.
-
AAvenger,
Thank you for great movie, it's painful though.
I have a lot of dieing Emily pictures too. :(
I hope you send me a better quality movie via e-mail.
My E-mail: mitsu@ah.wakwak.com or mitty@uranus.dti.ne.jp

btw did they say Flying-boat is planned?
I must read again HT's interview...

Mitsu I hope so...
Just like to say if I had the choice of awarding a 'best thread ever' this would get it.

Wow! Very nice work Mitsu. Hope we really get that plane. And Brewster of course ;) :D

That plane has more rooms than a lot of people's houses.

Extremely impressive work Mitsu, this is deserving of another punt!
SUPERFLY, are you reading this?
-
I receaved the book Mitsu scaned these out of a couple weeks ago, and spent hours looking at the images, very Beautiful plane, and would bring much to AH.
-
I really, really want this airplane.
-
Yeah!!!
HTC, model this plane, please.
-
pretty please superfly one of these :)

Nice paper plane...

WTG MItsu, what a nice suprise this would be, along with the Ki-84 :)

even if it was a big target it didn't go down easy - very sturdy plane - ever see "The Fighting Lady" - a bunch of F6F make passes at emily before she splashes (& even then they didn't sink her)
-
out of curiosity...
anyone know the combat records for the H8K2 Emily?
-
oh, FD...I can copy japanese combat records and photos to you via E-Mail. :)

i think if they put in a planeboat,,should be the PBY catalina:)

Why?
The US has gobs of stuff already, thus adding the PBY would only kill one bird with one stone.
The PBY would also, unlike the Emily, be a hoplessly slow sitting duck.
-
The US has gobs of stuff already, thus adding the PBY would only kill one bird with one stone.
well,,,more than one country used it,,,,the PBY cat was made in the usa,, and ussr,,and canada,,,it was use by almost all countries till the 1960's,,,ussr used them,,,france,,,canada,,uk,,even aussie used them,,and still used for helping with forest fires still to this day,,,and its allmost 70years old!!,,lol,,this plane has been around sence the 1930's..and proubly one of the only plane left from the 1930s that is still used to this day for work!!,,lol pby was slow,,but it had great range and very tuff
the emily was a good plane,,but!!,,i think there was only 131 made i beleve,,mite be wrong on that,,,but that aint a very big run compared to the pby {over 4,000 made}which was made by 3 major ww2 powers,,and used from the 1939,.,,till now,,,hard to look over a plane that was used for so many things,,by so many countries<~~pby kills allmost 3 birds with one stone
ussr could sure use a pby would be there best bomber around,,lol

-
yes...seriously I'm busy recently. :(

how 'bout not calling Emily but Mitsu? lol :D since you have so much info of it.
-
Bump.
-
Bump for HTC's 1.12 consideration.
-
I've researched about H8K2's defensive gun a bit, I update it.
All 20mm cannons on the H8K2 were Type 99 Mark II, were supplied by drum magazines. One drum magazine includes 45 20mm shells.
The H8K2 Emily mainly had the following defensive guns:
Front - 20mm cannon x1
Top - 20mm cannon x1
Side (Left) - 20mm cannon x1
Side (Right) - 20mm cannon x1
Tail - 20mm cannon x1
Front turret:
I have the drawing - but it is old 7.7mm turret's one.
it shows there were 7 drums.
But, my another Japanese H8K2 book claims that front 20mm turret was 225 rounds.
so it should be 45 x 5 drums = 225 rounds.
Top turret:
I have the drawing - top turret had 10 drum magazines.
so it should be 45 x 10 drums = 450 rounds.
Side turrets:
I have the drawing - but it is old 7.7mm turret's one.
it shows there were 7 drums in each.
no claims in my another book, but remember the front turret.
It seems 20mm drums were reduced to 5 from 7 when upgrading turret from 7.7mm MG.
so it's maybe 45 x 5 drums = 225 rounds in each turret.
Tail turret:
I have the drawing - tail turret had about 10 drum magazines.
I think it is the same as Top turret's one.
so it should be 45 x 10 drums = 450 rounds.
Researching is still continued, but I believe it's good information when modelling Emily. I can scan these drawings.
Thanks.
-
Thanks for the ammo info Mitsu.
Do you know anything about the bombsight, or the bombsight's location on the H8K2?
-
Karnak, I'd scan it later.
-

Thanks Mitsu. I was wondering about how the bombsight was setup.
-
I'm sorry for delay.
-
Thank you, Mitsu.
It isn't where I'd have guessed, but that works well enough.
-
That is good to hear that the Gun's were Type 99MK II, I always thought they were Type 99 MK I's, If this is so then are Most Late War Japanese Navy Aircraft Mounted defensive 20mm MK99 cannons realy MK II's? Like the Later Betty's and The Francis(PIYI) for example?
-
I recall reading that Emilys were used on night raids against Pearl Harbor and Oahu out of Marshall Islands area in 1943. I dont think these rose higher than nuisance level raids but they give a hint of the range of this aircraft and its potential if it had been given higher priority
-
this would be a good addition for aces high.
do you know if it ewas ever used to ferrry cargo as well.it would make a good addition for suppling bases when you could sit and wait on the water for it to be captured then resup quickly
-
I hear of the Emily and Catalina all around AH, it's about time HiTech works on em!
-
punt
-
you guys just have to tell me what "punt" means??!
-
Punt again.
-
Hmmmm HTC, how about this flying-boat for the first one? ;)

Bah, forget flying boats. We don't even have a decent water model yet. You're not going to get flying boats in.
Plus it was an anti-shipping plane. No need for it OR the Catalina OR any other maritime plane if we don't have any SHIPPING to be against. Against anything else it would be woefully underpowered underused and dogmeat for all the 44/45 late uber MA rides.

I've hear that opinion expressed before about Emily (probably 2 years ago in this) thread & I've heard it quite soundly refuted. Emily was the monster of combat seaplanes, like the B-29 was to the rest of the heavy buffs. Faster, tougher & more heavily armed....but really what heavy buffs (B-32 & B-29 excluded) arent fairly easy pickings for the late war monsters? IMO (if that is worth anything ), from the number it looks like Betty was maybe the best axis heavy....anyone remember how many hellcats it took to bring that one down in "The Fighting Lady"?
