God this is just so stupid!, then you take it and it is usless....wtf.
-
Hehehe, it is annoying when you have CAP over an enemy base and just waiting for a goon. Just to find during the wait a horde of people bomb every hangar/fuel/ammo there is- what use is the field after that.

Pet peave #2
Hearing whiners say "don't blow the gas/ammo/drunks!"; and then seeing the enemy pour out of said base.
If it's Red; it should be dead.

If it's Red; it should be dead.
And after capture; resupply. That's what it's there for.
-
So, defenders are forced to take 25% fuel, can't carry bombs, and have no troops...and how does this help the base capture?
-
when planning to take a base .. why not take a supply goon as well
.. after all isn't that what there for?

Take out the hangers. I haven't EVER seen a con spawn out of the ammo dump or a fuel bunker.
No reason whatsoever to blow anything but hangers and AA on a base that's being overrun. Behind the lines, sure, help yourself. On the front, no.
If you want to improve your attack score go attack a field that needs porking.
Oops...that's not as easy, is it. Silly me. :D

If chances are that the mission will be a failure, anyone running that mission *should* call a "Scorced Earth" policy,if you can't capture, make sure they can't use it for a spell (counter attack) Basic Tactics 101.
-
Good point Rip ... have been on a few of your long NOE missions that turned to "Scorched Earth" missions after the goon(s) have been taken out.
Seeker ...
The point here is that when a base is capped by 10-20 planes flying circles around the air strip, vulching the crap out of anybody that TRIES to up, while waiting for the goon to arrive.
While the cap is in place, some jerks feel inclined to blow up all the ammo, fuel, and troops. For what ? It completely eliminates the base for any forward attacks from that point.

I do it just to cheese off the strat potatos. ;)

Back in the day when Hangtime first joined the FDBs we used to have a squad nite thing going on. It wasnt anything official, it just seemed that everybody happened to be flying at the same time on the same nite so we would run some mission type stuff. Hangtime used to try to drill it into our heads that we shouldnt blow up that strat stuff. He finally gave up.....I mean after you vulch a guy 6 or 7 times and he finally gets it thru his thick skull to not try to take off there, what else is there to do but start raping the base? Its just boring flying around in circles waiting for SOB or Fatty to show up with the goon. Besides, the goon will prolly auger on final so it doesnt really matter.
:D

Glad you mentioned this.
Got a little torqued the other day watching guys pork a perfectly good base that we were about to take.
Have to remind myself... they paid $15 for the privilege of doing whatever the hell they want.

Last evening, the enemy had grabbed several vehicle bases close to our HQ. I launched out in a heavy F4U-4 for the two- sector flight (each way) to the nearest (to HQ) of these. When I arrive, I find that a Rook panzer and osti have killed the VH. I then proceeded to bomb the barracks and kill all the fuel. I then get howls of protest from the GV drivers for leveling the field. Well, too bad. Had someone responded to me earlier when I asked the status of the field, I would not have had to fly the 4 sectors round-trip. As it was, after killing that much time, I'm gonna bomb something. Note that the icon was not blinking, despite having Rook GVs there.
After that, I took a Wildcat (FM-2) from a CV and went to the next vehicle base. There I also found the VH down but no longer smoking, and a Rook panzer was nearby. However, an enemy panzer was also present. I put two 100 pounders on the tank (killed it) and rocketed the barracks and fuel. At least, if we didn't grab this field, it would be unable to dispatch troops for a while. Again, the icon was not blinking.
Still later, I visited an enemy port with an F4U-4 and leveled the town. A few minutes later, I get a request to come back and level the port itself as the ack was killing troops in parachutes (they should landed the goon on the far side of town rather than drop them, outside of ack range).
Airfields are a different problem. If overpowering numbers are present, than fuel, ammo and barracks should be spared. However, as Rip points out, if the issue is in doubt, flatten everything to prevent a counter-attack. Naturally, if this is a spoiling attack, fuel, ammo and barracks are the primary targets.
My regards,
Widewing

I thought that more than a few goons are needed to bring back a porked base.
Right?

You are right, it takes several.

I always love being the cat in the goon heading for the town and noticing that a building or two are up. At this point you call out on the radio for one or two the folks vulching the base to come over and kill the buildings. At which point you are completely ignored as they are to busy chasing the other 10 idiots that are ignoring you for the one newbie spit driver that keep upping. Now the best part is that about the time the one guy that has been running to beat hell for a sector to kill those two buildings for you shows up, so does the enemy LA-7 goon hunter that came in from the sector on the other side. As the town goes down, you get killed and the morons are still steeping on each others donuts for the vulch kill. I got a lot of respect for a cat that will grab a goon when needed, it has to be one of the most frustrating aspects of the game.

If I have any question about whether or not the base might be captured, I’m gonna pork the fuel and radar. It doesn’t take much for me to question the situation either.
-
if i arrive at a 'capped' base in my 'jug 'o deth' i'll orbit to see what's up. i'll vox to see what needs ord (routinely ignored). the city is my main priority, i'll check it first for status, and knock down anything standing.
if there are FHs up, and lifters or cons coming from other bases, and it looks like goons won't be able to get in, or they are getting killed trying to get in, well, fug it. i'm leaving the place a smoking hole.

sandman... I was joking. I only hit fuel/ammo/barracks to stop a base from attacking on of ours. If I gotta hit something just to hit something, I'll drop a hangar. Worst case is that it'll take 15 mins to re-up. Big deal, the other hangars have usually been down for more than a few minutes.
Besides, aren't there re-arm pads?

cc that Nifty... but some people do just that. They'll pork a base just to get a reaction.
No worries... it's all good.

A few days ago, from a cruiser, I killed the VH, all the fighter hangers, finished off the town, and hit a fuel tank while trying to kill the radar. Someone accused me of porking the base on vox, and I replied that killing the fighter and vehicle hangers was a good thing. When he pointed out the fuel tank I hit, I told him he should be happy about all the other stuff I had taken out.
So ok, it was a misunderstanding, but then he got sarcastic and kept ragging on me, so I left. A half hour later they were still trying to take that base. I imagine by that time everything I could have porked would have regenerated twice.
Some uber generalz need a life.

Rape? Nah... dressed like that you know they want it.
What gets me are the groups that use ruffies to lull the oponent. Bore them to death while hiding all over the place and then sneak up on a comatose victim. Its not really rape... but it is completely boring.
