other small news, Amtrak train derailed, people maybe dead (no big whoop)
Back to the beach in Cali! Please ohhh please somebody throw a wet beach towel over those poooor pilot whales. They might actually die! :(
Gotta love CNN.
-
Hehe, just think "Agenda" when you think CNN or National network news. ;)
-
They're actually giving the derailment some airtime now, but I'm sure there is some cheezy heroic rescue in store for the pilot whales that we'll be hearing about for days to come. When did whales become our favorite animals? What if a herd of pigs were drowned in a creek in Arkansas? Would that make national news? I think not. :)

In all fairness, a herd of pigs drowning in Ar-Kansas doesn't quite grab the headlines as much as whales beaching themselves...whales beaching could be anything from "Oceanic environmental factors" to "Study of Oceanic behavior"...they still haven't figured out "why" they do it, but they have theories...OTOH, a pig drowning just means it was a chosen method of suicide, better than the worse alternative of being CAUGHT BY A SOUTHERNER! ;)

They were after something, but not those squid...squidwards were on the west coast, these pilot whales on the east, most likely trying to get Krill in shallow waters...again...

I wonder how pilot whales would be to eat? I would like to get a few friends together, some beer, a grill, and head to the beach. Somebody bring sweet corn, potatoes, and a garden salad please.

IIRC Pilot Whales are the largest species of Dolphin. Think of them as Flipper on steriods. Would you eat Flipper??
-
But why does the media show so much interest in the whales beaching themselves? How often does this happen? If they were little mackerel or something nobody would even notice, but hey, they're big old loveable intelligent whales. :)

If you cook 'em right, taste just like chicken.
Much much better than barbequed kitten.
-
Maybe the head pilot whale saw a hottie on the beach, and not realising the problems of inter-species relationships, tragically lead his pod to certain death.
PS: Has anyone ever seen that clip of the beached whale being blown up by a crapload of tnt? Hope they don't do that again.

typical CNN viewer is interested as it is about a living creature larger than themselves..
as to why the whales beach, MT. lazs and other CA'ers passing gas in the Pacific :)

Tastes more like dalmation to me, easy on the sauce tho!, don't want to smother the scrumptious flavor.

I've had porpoise before (in the Pacific). It was killed by a small harpoon. You have to know how to cut it correctly because there are some lines of fat in the body that give it a strong flavor. It also needs to be bled. There are some areas of meat that are almost like a filet mignon. You probably want to marinade it over night though or at least 6 to 8 hours.
You should know that I'm originally from northwest Arkansas in the Ozarks, the part of Arkansas where we thought the movie "Deliverance" was a documentary.

Good to hear that you've got that accent under control. :)

An education, world travel, and learning two other languages helped me a lot. I do still sound like a hick after I've been drinking a lot.

Actually MT since they've come out with dolphin-free tuna it tastes kinda bland.

oops

LOL, thanks for the "Blast from the past" video Sandman!

the only thing worse than dolphin free tuna fish sandwiches is whale free automatic transmission fluid....

From that day on... whales thought twice about beaching themselves on our coast.
Muahahahaha!
-
Mystery of the beached whales. It's called one ping and one ping only, ok maybe two. But I bet it can be enough to rupture ear drums, destroy sense of direction balance. I bet that active thingy will ruin a whales day.
Btw wasn't there a bunch of beached giant squid just the other day?

I'm thinking.... We could set up one hell of a sushii bar!

Yeah, how dare they have a story about beached whales as their third tier story, behind the train wreck and behind the DOW soaring 447 points!!! The gall!!! The outrage!!!
You guys are really pathetic sometimes. Whining that a conservative station like CNN dares to mention something not immediatly connected to big business or nationalistc jingoism.
-
I just saw the photos on Yahoo News of the beached whales and was thinking how sad and terribly tragic, all that meat going to waste.
-
While there is no firm conclusion as to why the whales strand, it's generally believed that they play follow the leader --
This proves it, all whales are conservatives. :p
-
Which is why they weren't from the West Coast but rather the East Coast. Damn, Hblair, don't you know that Cape Cod is on the EAST Coast?!? I've been driving up and down the WEST coast all day, frantically looking for a whale to give a sponge bath to, because you said Cali and all this time you were talking about a bunch of EAST coast whales. Grrrr, Hblair, let me send you a geography book.
-
lol elfie, I wasn't paying too much attention to the story. :)
Karnak, it wasn't third tier early this afternoon, it was the main thing. They'd cut in and say they were on a story about a derailment then go back to the lost pilot whales. CNN's conservative? :)
-
Liberals have a very strong affinity for whales (think Rosie O'Donnell).

Give the whales all the press you want. I'm just glad there isn't another child abduction/molestation/murder story this week.

A bunch of whales try to commit mass suicide.
Some amazinhunk humans throw them back in the water.
So the whales try again.
And we're going to try and put them back in the water.
How would YOU like it if you tried walking out into the ocean to kill yourself, and some whoopeeed whales kept pushing you back onto the beach?
-
Whales have been beaching themselves since before our ancestors began living on the ground. This is a natural phenomenon; tragic but fairly commonplace.
Why is it that humans cannot leave the natural world alone? Either we're destroying it willy-nilly with urban development and sprawl, or we're attempting to prevent "tragic" natural events. We attempt to save whales that would normally die or we try to put out natural forest fires in order to "save the trees."
I wonder how the natural world managed to survive for so long without it's human caretakers? Many plants and trees have adapted to natural forest fires and depend on them for seed germination. The successful fighting of forest fires over the last 50 years has had a disastrous effect on our national forests. Dead limbs, underbrush, and thickly packed and stunted trees have caused modern forest fires to burn much hotter that would normally be the case. Seeds that would germinate in a normal, natural fire are now burned or sterilized in fires that burn hotter than 1000 degrees fahrenheit.
Nature doesn't always need a nanny.
