why were there blimps at d-day?

there were a whole bunch of barrage balloons over the fleet if that counts.

those guys were all in great shape back then, but a lot of the vets have put on a few pounds...but seriously, i know the US Coast Guard used blimps in WWII for costal patrols, as they can stay aloft forever, can carry tons of eqpt, & have a great view - maybe there were some watching for sub, but i've never seen those pix - have seen the barrage balloons, though...

I think that's what he's talking about.
The balloons were used to hold thick cables in the sky, so that enemy airplanes would not come down to strafe/bomb, for fear that the cables would slice off important pieces of their airplanes.
