Title: Awesome new ICON developement in AH (idea)
Post by: brendo on July 31, 2002, 07:29:40 PM
Hi all,

I am not proposing that HTC change the icon settings or display information.

We now have alpha channel code in AH, as used in the gunsite.

So... how can this improve the way AH displays icons?

I'll let you guys talk out the idea, I'll post some screenshots later today.

Not sure I follow you there.  (i.e.- what are you gettin at?)  In laymen's terms please, I'm pretty stupid.  :)

EDIT: just noticed I passed 500 posts.  That only puts me 12,000 behind Ripsnort.  :)

One way to use the alpha for icons is to have the icons fade the further away the target is. That would be a very good idea IMHO.

As it is now, you can do a Linda Blair spin with your head and instantly notice every enemy aircraft within d6.0.

Woiuld it be possible to fade the icons so that "normal" color & intensity would appear at d1.5 (or something like that), and fade out from there. You could still see the icons at d6.0 but you would have to look close.

The icons in WW2OL got brighter with range?  I thought it was with time in the view plane that they got brighter.  Been a while... but it seemed that if I looked away from a con (even if it was near) there'd be a certain amount of time before the icon would reappear at full brightness.

Its actually one of the features I really disliked about the game... target re-aquisition was just too hard if the con was below you.

you are right deja that is what they do, but I think the fading thing is lame.  The slow fade depending on distance is great, but because not only do you get a more realistic game but you also get an instant idea of how far it is just by the brightness of the color.  Using this may also allow people to eventually turn off the laser range finder and still have some sense of distance.

DJ, last time I played WWIIOL, the icons at distance were kinda greyed out when they "faded in", so you couldn't really tell if they were friendly or not.  When you got close enough to "ID" them, they turned from grey to the correct color at full strength.  You're right in that the fade is related to how long you've been looking at them.

target reacquisition is supposed to be hard if he is below you :) but it should certainly vary with range

basically imo fade in time should be a function of range. fades in real quick at close range (less than a second) but long time at d6.0 or so (i am thinking in the 3-4 second range).
