Ok forget all the shiny snare stars back to basic
Rythem the base of the song the dirigent of the band
they can never play false only they can miss and hit to late
my favourite
William calhoun i think he's got a very fat funky metal beat
-
Carter from Dave Matthews Band and that guy from Rush
-
yeah Neil Pert (sp?) from Rush is an awesome drummer, and I'd have to add Keith Moon from The Who to that list as well, I dunno how technical he was really, but man Looney Mooney was a maniac back there. :)
-
PERT!!
-
Zigaboo Modeliste :)
-
Marcus Baylor (Yellow Jackets)
Daff

"I'm Batman!"
-
Buddy Rich. :)
Pert is the most proficient rock drummer.
John Bonham was the man though. :D
-
Neil Peart. Although the recent song writings of Lifeson and Lee have not done much to showcase his talents.
The "Neil Peart - A Work in Progress" DVD is too cool. I would recommend it for any advanced drummer.
-
Best I ever saw.. Chester Thompson who did the live shows for & with Phil Collins when Genesis toured. He was incredible.
-
Oh yea... Micky Hart.
-
Alex Van Halen and Tommy Lee,
-
Neil Peart.
The key word about Bonham is "effective". To me, he was the right drummer for Zep; don't know how he would fare in a different type of band
-
that fella that plays with the david grisman quartet ... (plays fiddle sometimes)
(was knocking on his head with his mouth open for rythem sound)
Micky Harts good or fishman
how about best rock piano ,.,, PigPIN!
-
I dunno about greatest, but Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and now Pearl Jam fame is a damn fine drummer as well.
-
Mike Getz of STP is a good technical drummer like Neil.
Masher
-
Bonham's strength was his way with anapectic (sp) beats.
love that stop/sutter stuff
IMO he had the coolest rock feel and tension.
Pert da' man tho IMO
-
Gawd i hate Rush, and Pert. I admit he's a good "technical" drummer, but the man has NO swing whatsoever! Its painfull!
Here's my list:
Bonham - for rock, absolutely unparallelled power & feel
Mitch Mitchell - probably the most SENSITIVE drummer in rock. Brought his Jazz skills to the Experience and was a large part of their unique sound. Listen to how he compliments Jimi's playing!
Ziggy Modeliste - drummer for The Meters, by far the funkiest man who ever touched a drumstick. NO ONE plays like he did
Ritchie Hayward, of Little Feat - probably Ziggy Modeliste's best student. He's got that New Orleans Funk feel in a Rock context.
Clyde Stubblefield - James Brown's drummer 1967-1975. The absolute MASTER of groove.
Chester Thompson - havent heard him with Phil Collins, as i detest Collins, but he was utterly amazing with Zappa
Bernard "Pretty" Purdie - Jazz, R&B, Rock, Motown, you name it, he was on it. Probably the longest resume of any drummer ever. From Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan, he's added SOUL to innumerable recordings
Sly Dunbar - the King of Reggae
Stewart Copeland - unique sound, unique approach to drumming. He brought the "reggae feel" to rock, but he made it his own
Pierre Morlin - of "Gong". The chops & agility of Pert, but with a groove.
Narada Michael Walden - of "Mahavishnu Orchestra" And Jeff Beck fame. Another technical monster with feel.
And lets not foget the great drummers of Jazz - Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Idris Mohammad, Buddy Rich etc...
-
I agree with most of that except for Copeland..
I love his stuff but he can't stay in time... ?
and Pert.. I just like the feel.
Especially on stuff like La Villa Strangiata (the slow part)
however, I agree that there are better drummers, specially in Jazz.
Lenny White impressed me live (Return to Forever)
Bill Bruford had cool beats IMO.
but hell.. I'm just a guitar player.. what do I know about drumming ?!?
*edit* Ziggy Modeliste... who?
guess I need to give a listen.
-

oh yeah and him to
he had the jazz school
jazz drummers are amazing
Chester Thompson - havent heard him with Phil Collins, as i detest Collins, but he was utterly amazing with Zappa
"get me out of this cage "with genesis man that number is awesome 12 minutes long
I dunno about greatest, but Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and now Pearl Jam fame is a damn fine drummer as well.
Also one of my favourites he's got funny but hard to follow rythems with eastern influence.
-
oh yeah.. and whatever the name of Dave Matthews' drummer is.. I like the groove he has with the bass player (don't know his name either)
-
I gotta go along with Neil Peart. Simply amazing.
I don't know how many of y'all have ever heard of Spyboy, the band Emmylou Harris put together and toured with in 1998, but the drummer in that band, Brady Blades, was fantastic. I hope she puts that group back together again.
-
Neil Peart.
2112 concert blew my mind.
Thanks Mom :)
-
Easy...
Keith Moon..
-
Well since I am a jazz guy my picks would be the following, and yes it was to damn hard to narrow it down to one.
Big Band
Buddy Rich - Nobody has ever done a finer job of combining speed and power into something that would swing so smoothly)
Louie Bellson - He has one of the greatest shuffles I have ever heard. Listen to some of his stuff with Ellingtons orchestra and you will be blown away. You can start with his work on "In a Mellow Tone"
Bop
Max Roach - This cat really revolutionized how jazz drummers thought about the bass drum
Art Blakey - He brought some great Latin and island influences into bop. Plus I think he has one of the most distinct sounds of any of the bop guys. I can pick him out in about 2 bars.

I'm pretty sure Chester Thompson is the drummer on the Genesis "Seconds Out" album. Great live stuff.
-
Jimmy Chamberlin is the greatest drummer alive....and you know this man!!!!

-
Brandt Bjork from Fu Manchu
Todd Trainer from Shellac
Taz - ex Rev. Horton Heat

Avid, how bout Elvin Jones? I think he's as easy to pick out as Art. He's like a Rock drummer in Jazz, he just them SO dang hard, and yet remains sensitive. His playing with the Trane quintet is probably my favorite jazz drumming.

Ginger Baker

Carl Palmer

Hey Red Ant,
I would have to agree with you on Elvin. You see, like I said, to many good ones to pick from. In jazz there are just so many subtleties that is impossible;e to say one guy was the best. Certain cats were better at certain styles and sounds but they all were/are just incredible musicians.
Off to the garage to woodshed,

John Bonham... the most influental hard rock drummer...
