Don't say that SM!

It'll be the name of a band next week, the BBQ Kittens.

You guys have good taste in songwriters. Been a Joni fan for... er, ever. I'd like to add Randy Newman to the list. Hands down the best concert I've been to (and I've done my share), was Randy and a piano in Austin's Paramont. He can rip your heart out. My second fav was Little Feat in the same venue. Lowel (sp) George and the guys wrote some killer tunes. Steely Dan, Jackson Browne aand Bob Dylan don't suck toenails either. ;)

Tom Waits

I bought the Rising a couple of days ago, Springsteens latest album. Man...

Springsteen is unbelievable. No one is even close. How about these: Nebraska, Born in the USA, Ghost of Tom Joad, The Rising...

I have been sitting here for a good 15 minutes trying to describe exactly how good that man really is... but I cant. Words cannot describe how good he is.

Its like, first the music gets your attention, and your thinking "yeah, this is good music"...then the lyrics hit you like a sledgehammer. Bam.

Sandman :)

My personal favourite is the live version of the River, have you heard that one? You know the one where he is talking to the audience for about 5 mins before the song start?
I still get goosebumps when I hear that one...(and I have heard it about a thousand times now)

Oh... and another one to add to your future lists...

Looks like pop/rock is covered.

For country, Johnny Cash. The first person elected to both the Rock and Roll and Country Hall-of-Fame—and it sure wasn’t for his singing or guitar playing. Folsum Prison Blues, I Walk the Line, Wanted Man (with Bob Dylan), I Still Miss Someone.

For blues, Muddy Waters. His song-writing and guitar playing influenced Cuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, SR Vaughn, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones (named their band after one of his songs) and many others. I Can’t be Satisfied, Rolling and Tumbling, Rolling Stone, 32-20 Blues, Mannish Boy.

So, blues and country got covered.

For heavy, there are Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, Chuck Schuldiner, Rolf Kasparek, Kai Hansen, Steve Harris and so on and so on. Too damn many good performing songwriters.

the Boss?

this isn't over-rated songwriter performer is it?

I've always thought he was good but I never understood why anyone would think he was great.  lots of decent songs but mostly just back ground music while I'm doing something else.
