I was standing in front of the Pepsi machine trying to evaluate my change situation vs selection when a gentleman went over to use the Coke machine. After he made his selection, the person with him commented on how neat the machine worked (it has a tray that raises and gets the soda then delivers it to a handoff area).
The person purchasing the Coke saw an opportunity to shine... "Yes, its quite impressive. Coke won an innovation award for that. Its not like the stupid pepsi machine that just drops it so it gets all fizzy"... as he wandered over to the pepsi machine to show the gentleman its inferior design.
I was still standing there counting change when the Coke machine endorser dropped his soda. It hit with a solid thunk and dented in the corner of the can. Fortunately he'd not opened it yet.
I fought every urge toward outright laughter and managed to keep it to a.. "Now that was ironic" comment. The gentleman did not seem to appreciate it as he picked up his soda, grunted and marched out of the vending area.

Here in Florida, we still have the old "drop in your change and I'll drop out a can" style machine. The benefit of this is that the machine pre-fizzes the soda, making it easier to spray all over your head on hot days.
What I'd really like to see are the really old machines with the glass door, where the drinks were in glass bottles and sat on shelves with the bottle caps facing you. Nothing like some super-compressed carbonated soda packaged in a bottle that might, just might, explode, with its metal projectile facing the consumer. I like a little danger with my sugar buzz!

Why you smart bellybutton Deja. If you would have smarted off to ME like that I'd have shook up my soda and opened it in your face! Then while you were wiping the Coke out of your eyes I'd kick you in the privates and steal your change so I could buy another Coke. Sheeesh, kids today :)

The problem with those old machines was that kids would buy one, and then while the glass door was open exposing the tops to all of the other bottles, kids would take a bottle opener and open all of the other bottles. So you would then have a vending machine full of empty bottles for sale.

Which is why I'm an advocate of tougher penalties for vending machine fraud. Did you know that vending machine fraud adds 50% to the price of your product? Why should I have to pay a buck for a package of Ho-Hos because some twerp is ripping off vending machines? Lock the punks up for twenty years and THEN see how funny kids think vending machine fraud is.

why do you think we want them back ???

man I loved those machines. just a bottle opener and a collapsible cup and it was free soda every day

I like when the kids pay 35 cents for a paper, then take ALL the papers, and sell them for 25 cents each. That's a riot.

Uh...Sikboy, I don't consider that vending machine fraud as much as I consider that free enterprise.

When vending machines are outlawed, only outlaws will have vending machines.
