what width do i need so its at a scale of 1:1?
-
(http://www.concentric.net/~Reaper/mapmaker/1scale.jpg)
if you want to make what is equates to a 1:1 scale terrain (real size), you will need to load a region into MapMaker that is already approximately 1:1 (512x512 miles)
-
that doesn't really help
it says the width is measured in degrees, that says miles

Furious is correct about this statement BenDover.
Try this calculator at the web site very cool!
http://164.214.12.145/calc/degree.html
So I would enter a latitude number that would be close to the center of the area you want ( North to South ) that would give you the center of your 512 mile terrain.
Example: If I wanted to make a 512 mile terrain around Nova Scotia, Canada and wanted to make the city of Halifax as my center position of my 512 X 512 terrain. I would use 45* Latitude, and enter that number in the Calculator.
Doesn't really matter that much anyway, your map wouldn't be that far off it you entered a Latitude number close to where you are taken a section from the world.
I have another site too that may be useful but I'll need to find it first.
I'll be soon getting back to working on using the mapmaker again and may even come up with a Help file. Had found some information that may be useful to people who want to use the program.

Sorry BenDover wasn't completely thinking :( I should have added that you would be using Statute Mile.
Nautical miles are used on ocean and coastal waters.
Statute miles are used for inland areas such as the Intracoastal Waterway and the Great Lakes.

right
lat= 7.23 degrees
long= 11.22 degrees
adding those to values i get this (see attacted),
which, correct me if i'm wrong, looks right by eye balling my atlas i found in a drawer today
