I'd bet the majority of Americans work the 40 hour week.

5 days a week; sometimes all 7. Usually 8-9 hours per day but my longest shift ever was 24h and in this summer 20 hours.
Longest shift my friend did was 32 hours and this week he did work 5 days, 16-17 hours/day + this weekend, 8 hours/day.

Good thing is you don't need any sleeping-pills after that...

My best ever work schedule

     Wed-Fri  6a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sat-  Show up 6 a.m. in the morning, check in, leave.
Got paid full time (80 hours every two weeks) and got paid overtime fro every hour worked over 8 (four hours a day)

man, those were the days.  Triple time for holidays, and I only really needed to be on-call, so I still basically had the time off.

My company is a lot more responsible now, and I work a standard shift.  That was about 4 years ago.

I work as a support engineer in a big (in fact - biggest in Soviet times) institute of Russian Academy of Science.

Network that we support is working w/o any maintenance for the last 7 years. So I have to be at work only at pay day, to get my ridiculous 1300 rubles.

But, to have some money for cigarettes and beer, I have to work on "private orders" and for contract to solve problems for VIPs in the Academy. So, it turns out to be a funny job where I can drink beer every day after 18:00, but must be ready to run somewhere anytime. And when I have a large order - I can spend a few days at work w/o going home at all.  I can sit on my arse for 3-4 weeks only to wait for the time when I should tear the above mentioned arse to a British flag.

Paradox. When you have work - you earn money but don't have time to spend it. When you don't have work - you have time to spend money, but don't have any money to spend ;)

So I'll sum it up as 35 hours of work in an "average" week, while it can be from 2 to 120 hours a week ;)

I usually work from late march to june (sometimes 40 but usually 12 hrs a day up to 7 days a week)  then. do camping, rafting , ect. for july and august, then early sept. to late november I'm back to work on over time.  in the off time I usually only work 1 out of 5 weeks but some years(maybe 1 in 7) I get on a project that is long term and I work all winter or summer.

on an average it works out to usually 8 months of work and 4 months off

the average US worker has a 40 hour work week (Mon - Fri 8 hr day) usually 10 days off a year vacation. Sick time and company holidays vary job to job. Yes we work more in the US compared to the average worker in Europe

I work in the Air Quality monitoring field and the Law Enforcement supply field when I'm not doing that.

I work about 100 days a year on avg in the first proffesion, and a weekend or so a month in the other.

You get the idea :p.

I spend 3x more time than both right here, on my PC.

Wowsers Frenchy.  I always said I'd push a broom if it let me live in the USA, but if that's all you make being a flight instructore, maybe I'll reconsider that train of thought.

Makes between $20 and $150 a day.

Beans and Franks.

Forget the fart jokes, fuk man, you need electricity. I just don't know how you do it. If you can get local cheese, that's a sweet lunch.

Now ask me why I aint a pilot. (besides falling to sleep with engine noise)

Good luck Frenchy.

(I mean in getting laid. $2 is a squeak of a budget to impress anyone, even yourself for Gads sake)

CFI sucks money wise. A HUGE amount of time spent at the airport for little money in return.
But it's a step, you make hours and 2 years later you hopefully make it to cargo/commuter where u make $1,500, maybe $2,000 month.
After some times of twin/turbine you can make it to the airline/corporate... start $2,500/month and end up at $20,000 a month at 60 year old with a fat belly and a mustache if you are lucky.

Of course, there are always the lucky ones who are at the right place at the right moment and earn a "shortcut". Aviation is a squeak, you spend a LOT for your training and need to live like a bum for a couple of years before having a reward.
It's not like regular BS, or BA graduates who study 4 years and start to make $$$ as soon as out of school.

I'm pretty lucky, I make $25/h as a CFI, the national average is more like $15/h.

$25/hour, 20 hours a week? Say 30 which is a stretch. Still, yikes.

Man I pity you.

DRipsnore could automate your career, but your right, you'll be 60 and have lotsa money.

Omg u guys are overworked
and working more than 12 hrs on 1 day should be forbidden

i guess a lot get sick repeatly

don't live to work

long days aren't so bad. depending on the day of the week and the hours worked it can pay 1 1/2 times or double your hourly rate(depending on your union contract).

plus on a 7 day 12 hour schedual with only 1 lunch(they pay you extra not to take your second lunch break) you can make upto 119 pay hours after the premium time is calculated.

at just under 3 40-hour weeks worth of pay and only one weeks worth of hotel, car, and out of town dinning expences, I'd rather work the longer hours and just take 3 or 4 months off throughout the year,  on a 40 hour schedual there is hardly time to do anything really interesting after work anyway. this way I get my time off in amounts big enough to take full advantage of it.

if you've shown up at work your days pretty much ruined anyway, you might as well make enough cash while you're there that you don't have to come back for awhile.

the only real draw-back is my check is hit for taxes as if I make that much every week so they take my money at the rate of a guy who makes 3 times what I do anually. ( the first check I recieved where take home was less than half was very hard to swallow)

I used to have a sweet shift.  I'd work 3 12 hour shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (nights) and would get off from work at 8 a.m. Monday morning and not have to be back until 8 pm Friday night.  The pay worked out to 40 hours a week.  We also received a 12% shift differential.

I went to a less sweet shift after that, but it payed much better.  I worked 3 12 hour shifts one week then 4 12 hour shifts the next.  The 4th night was always time and a half.  We also received the 12% differential.

When I went to day shift (M-F 7-3:30) I took a 35% cut in pay (not in wage... just takehome).  3 years later and I'm just recovering from that.  They keep me pretty busy at work, but perhaps 50% of the job is at my desk writing reports or on phone conferences.  I can't say its hard work, but it still manages to be challenging.

I do miss those 3 and 4 day weekends though... but being on a normal shift lessens the pain.

I work in a Paper Mill, my current job pays $18.45 an hour, We work four days on, four days off, 12 hours per shift. So some weeks I work 48 hours, an other weeks only 36 hours.

We  get 1.2 times overtime pay for working Sundays.

This schedule is a hell of alot better than the 28 day rotation we used to work til about 2 years ago.

(28 day rotation = 8 hour shifts, 7 days in a row graveyard shift, 2 days off, 7 days in a row swing shift, 2 days off, 7 days in a row day shift, 3 days off)

Deja's schedule sounds a lot like mine.  I work 12 hour shifts on Sat Sun and Mon and then I am off for the rest of the week.  As long as you put in a full 36 hours you get paid for 40...so its like getting 4 free hours a week just for showing up.  Would be nice if we could get a shift differential.  I had that at one of my old jobs...it sure was nice.  They give us a lot of flexibility with our schedule though.  We are allowed to trade days with others if we need a day off during our regular scheduled time.  Heck, if you work it out right with the right people, you can work like 6 days in a row and then be off for almost 2 weeks and it doesnt burn up any of your vacation time.

Milnko-
What mill do you work at? Wauna, Wyerehouser, or Long-fibre?

if you're working at Wauna stop by the new stainless tank (being built between recovery and the digesters) and say hi.

I'll be there 7-5:30 tuesday- friday for the next couple weeks.
I'll be the guy with the long hair and the welding hood or hard hat that says 'capt. Apathy' on the side.
