Title: bloom25: 3DMark2001 SE challenge
Post by: Animal on August 09, 2002, 05:05:46 PM
My PC, Your PC, OUTSIDE!!!

Here's the thing: No more popsicle standard benchmark.

1.)  1600x1200

2.)   4x FSAA (enabled inside 3DMark, set the 3D AA settings in display properties to application controlled.

3.)   Mipmap Detail Level to: BEST IMAGE QUALITY (Display Properties, Direct3D settings)

4.)   All other settings in 3DMark set to default.

5.)   No popsicle third party apps to reduce image quality and gain performance. Just a clean driver install. Drivers of your choice.

I have a faster video card, but you have a faster overall system.
LETS SEE WHO CAN SQUEEZE THE EXTRA PERFORMANCE!

System Info Version:   2.2
Operating System:      Microsoft Windows XP
Processor:      AMD AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1600+ @ 1.61 GHz
Graphics Cards:      NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600
         NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600
Total Physical Memory:   512 MB
Free Physical Memory:   342.03 MB
Motherboard Manufacturer:   ABIT <>
Motherboard Model:      761-686B(KG7)

My first test gave 2371', gonna run it a few times again to see if it can score higher.

The only problem is that my monitor doesn't support that resolution (at least I don't think it does).  I'll try it though...

BTW animal.. could you post the whole system information and stats results?  I'd like to see what drivers and FSB you are using.

Also... I don't have the direct3d setting in the place you called out.

Cool but I'm a tard and cant find where all that system information you have is, in 3DMark.

Here are my system specs:

Athlon XP 1600+ overclocked to 1,607Mhz (153MHz FSB)
Abit KG7 w/ latest 4in1 drivers
512MB Corsair PC2100 CAS2.5
PNY Geforce 4 Ti4600 overclocked to 310/720 (30.30 dets)
IBM Deskstar 60GXP 7200 RPM

Windows XP Pro.

Animal, just save the results and select .txt file format.

Bad news on my card, 64 MB of ram is not enough to run at 1600x1200 @ 32 bit color w 4x AA.  I'm not going to be able to run the test at all.

I can run the test with 2x AA on at 1600x1200 32 bit color.  (64 MB on my video card I'm sure is really limiting me though... :( )

Here's the result:

Deja; Display Properties>Settings>Advanced>Geforce 4 Tixxx>Additional Properties>Direct 3D Settings>Mipmap Detail Level: Best Image Quality

Makes a big difference in score, and in image quality.

Running at these high settings is what really matters if you want to play future games (like Doom 3 and UT2003) at a decent speed with your current hardware.

Geforce 3 and some Geforce 4 "only" have 64mb wich will supposedly suck for those future games.
Probably moot, even the 4600 may suck, and we will all need faster hardware.

We are being played the upgrade game.

The first was 4x FSAA and the second was 2x (like bloom's)

My setup is right out of the box too.  I don't tweak high performance parts... I mean why pay the $$$ if you still have to tweak it?

Nice FSB ya got going there Animal.  I guess that's not much of a problem with those disposable processors you use. :p

Deja, I really like overclocking my FSB :)
You usually get more noticeable speed improvements with a higher FSB than just overclocking the core speed.
I tried to go for 160Mhz FSB, but anything above 155 is unstable. Lowered it to 153 just to make sure.

It may lower the CPU life, but by the time its about to die I will already be replacing it with another $80 processor.

:D

Below is my 2xFSAA result
3DMark Score   4446
This is better and we dont clutter the thread.

Eagler go to Direct3D settings in your Geforce display properties and change Mipmap detail level to best image quality
that should take care of your high scores ;)

If you are still getting 3k+ scores after that, then you are probably using the old version of 3DMark2001 and not the new SE version.

Your score seems unusually high.
In fact, Deja's scores are superb.

Yup thats the right one
Its an awesome score, what drivers are you using?
are you overclocking the video card?
are you using any third party tweaking utility (like riva tuner and Geforce tweak utility?)

It's a PNY ti4400 with XP driver 6.13.10.2742
Can't remember if that's the one from the PNY CD or if that is what XP put in. I know I didn't download one.

Nope the video card nor the cpu are overclocked, straight up default settings. AMD XP2000 cpu on the Asus mb. Using the ATA 100 IDE thingy for the HD's.

no tweating programs either

I currently do not have an anti virus program setup on the XP disk, been meaning to put Norton 2002 but haven't got around to it. XP is the work OS while the dual boot goes to Win98 for AH and games so the X45 works correctly. Dunno ..

Just ran it again to see if it was a fluke ....

3561 3D marks

I noticed under tests in 3D Mark SE, I have been testing 17 out of 21.
There are 4 tests called "Pro Version Tests" I guess I haven't been testing. Are you guys including those? Looks like they need to be checked/added to be included.. maybe that's the difference.

edit:
seems those four are for a purchased version of the program, nm.

I got mine up a bit with some new drivers (40.41 Detonators and 1.13 nForce drivers).
2655 3Dmarks at Animal's original settings. (http://www.raf303.org/funked/animal4x.txt)
4628 3Dmarks at Animal's settings except 2X FSAA. (http://www.raf303.org/funked/animal2x.txt)

Skuzzy here is why your numbers are weirdly high:

Article 1 (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/videocards/article.php/3211_932821__11)
Article 2 (http://www17.tomshardware.com/graphic/01q4/011123/radeon8500-01.html)

According to those guys, the 8500 won't do 4xFSAA at that resolution.  From the second article it sounds like it ran without FSAA when you asked for that resolution with 4x.

AKNimitz, your numbers are just fine.

Eagler, your numbers are way higher than anybody on the MadOnion comparison site using those settings with similar hardware.  You should post them with the "online browser" thing, maybe they'll give you a prize.  :)

Eagler I think I figured it out.
Go into the properties for your display adapter, hit the advanced button, then find the 3D Antialiasing Settings.  Make sure you have it set to "Allow applications to control the antialiasing mode".

For those interested GF3 will do the test if it's the 128mb version.  I've not messed it about too much, the det drivers could do with updating and a bunch of other housekeeping.
