We're all gonna DIE! We're all gonna DIE!
No... really.. we are. It's just that you really don't know when that will be.
But THIS JUST IN:
'Asian Brown Cloud' poses global threat (http://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/south/08/12/asia.haze/index.html)
The important thing to remember is that THIS IS ENTIRELY THE FAULT OF THOSE BASTIGES IN THE USA!
Thank you, and good night.

LOL! Guess we'll have to turn our "White mans guilt complex" to the Southeast Asian countries now? ;)
-
see see , if only bush had signed the toyota treaty non of this would be happening,
i promse not to cook with cow dung anymore
-
Toad, do you have alot of investments in oil companies or something?
You keep quoting the Diserata, I wonder if you have ever read the serenity prayer?
-
Damn shame us energy wasting polluters in the U.S. don't have that haze. Mexico does, SE Asia does, and I am sure that Eastern Europe did or does, to say nothing of Africa and S. America.
Yeah, it is all the U.S.'s fault.
-
Who are you guys arguing with?

The world Thrawn.

You mean Terra? Uhhh, I think she's going to win.

The interesting thing here is, Toad actually reads CNN, and apparently believes what it spins.

Just had a thought. Millions are going to die and soon. You can be as nonchalant it as you want, of course you aren't in their situation, are you? Millions are going to die because of this, but hey lets talk about how this affects the US.
Get over yourselves.

Damn RIGHT we better talk about how this affects the USA! We better start building huge fans on the East and West Coasts to keep that brown cloud from coming over here and killing us too!
-
Thanks for getting that straight Thrawn. We caused it and we don't seem to even care!!!

Read my sig. :D

I wan't talking to you. Do you need some attention....are you feeling lonely...want a hug?
And before my toejam gets spun to much. I haven't placed any blame whatsoever on the US in any of the three treads on this topic, so you can stow it.

Guess my aim is getting pretty good :) how's it feel to have pee in your cherio's? :p

Oh, yes, I've read and known of the Serenity Prayer for quite a while. I find the Desiderata more to my liking; seems more reflective of the everyday life that I actually lead. Touches upon more of the normal everyday occurences so to speak. There's that "listen to the dull and ignorant ; they too have their story" part that seems so applicable many tmies every day. Particularly, I like the phrasing of "Therefore be at peace with God whatever you conceive Him to be That's just so... so... so.. INCLUSIVE, don't you think? So, my fave is the D.
I have no investments in Oil Companies directly. There probably are some in a Mutual Fund I have though. However, I am considering doing a little research to see who really controls the cow dung market. Could be time to short it, although if you read it on CNN you can bet the "big boys" in cow dung have already made the real money on the shift. But what if home chefs stay with the traditional fuel despite the Brown Cloud? Trying times, indeed, for investors.
As to the millions dying.... well, they might die of the Brown Cloud. You really can't be sure. After all, as Easymo pointed out, it IS a CNN piece.
Most certainly though, you can be sure all of those millions and billions WILL die... sooner or later. It's man's fate, eh? Birth, life death, rebirth (well, the last depending upon your particular belief system)? The Circle of Life so to speak?
Another thing you can be certain of is this: If CNN is correct, there's not much Toad or Thrawn can do about now is there? I don't really see myself as a "causal factor" in the chain of events leading up to the disaster, either. Do you?
So, unlike the previous threads on man-made disasters it doesn't seem like we'll have to wait 100 or 200 years to see if this one is a real threat or a hobgoblin. At present, of course, it apparently does not affect the US, however the bit about the traveling cloud is a bit disconcerting, eh? Probably hit Vancouver first...... but then we'd all eventually be in the "soup" as well.
Nonetheless, I just wanted to be the first to point out that the US is at fault. I'd like to offer my apology at this time as well. Might as well get it over with , eh? Someone has to be the Sin Eater.
Now, I hope I've answered all your questions, Thrawn. Let me know if you need anymore info.
:D
-
Thanks for the info!
I’ll add that to my worry list when I get around to it. ;)

No there is not much that Thrawn and Toad can do about this one. And yes it is our lot to die. I just don't want to go down like a deer staring at the head lights. Nor do I want any of the people who are on this board to do so either, but it is there choice I guess.
And Udie, I've picked on you often enough, I imagine I deserve that and worse.;)

No Thrawn, the people of Terra.
As for who's fault it is... won't matter who's fault it is if that thing starts movin...

Now there's a great mind picture... tragic, but thats population control in canada for yah..
;)

You know Thrawn you right. The only problem is I'm a put your money where your mouth is type of guy.
If you can get the folks up in Canada to kick in, say 30% of their yearly income to clean up the mess made in Asia FIRST, then I'm with ya. Otherwise your barking up the wrong tree.

Just to be a nit picking jerk, I imagine you're taking to the people on this board that aren't from the US, that blame the US for all the worlds ills. ;)
Your right, and Toad's right, that cloud of toejam would be heading for our western seaboard, if it moves anywhere. It would be nice if we could find a way to stop it from happening again or continue to happen.
Is this thing seasonal? Anyone got more info on it?

30%? Where did you get that number. Why the people of Canada? Do you think I speak for all of Canada?
Do you think this problem won't affect you?
Edit: BTW Seatle is about five feet away from Vancouver.
-
Exactly. ;)
Dunno much about it, but in the CNN article they scientists "were able to track its journey to pristine parts of the world, such as the Maldives, to see how it affected climate." during the northern winter months of '95 to 2000.
Is it winter over there right now?

Sorry Thrawn, I am not making light of this subject or you, but I couldn't resist throwing in a Dr. Suess reference. It's very rare that one can do that.
As far as being seasonal, -dead- should be able to answer that. It appears he might be a HK resident. I used to travel to HK/PRC alot and the smog/haze was always worse in the summer months.
Been in northern Thailand when they burn the fields....that helps to cause this.
Actually, if memory serves, this brown cloud was really big back in 96/97 when the Indonesian farmers where burning their fields and it got out of control.

Not really. Did you or I choose to let China and the Indian sub-continent become so populated? (Well, I guess we could have tried to forcibly reduce their population...) Is there any way we could have switched them all to "clean electric heat"? Would electricity have solved the problem, given coal fired generators and all?
BTW, what do you think about ole Tom Malthus, anyway?
Relax. There are many things on the planet that no one controls. This is one of them; put it in the "fate" or "destiny" column.
-
Thanks for the info Cobra. Checking the web now for further info.
I through out my "Sneed" ages ago. ;)
PS: This is completely subjective, but has any else seem to notice a crap load of record floods, droughts and forest fires this year?
Here's the latest.

Got to make sure there enough money to get the job done right the first time. No F***in around.
Why not the people in Canada? Don't they want something done about it? Be the first to stand up to the plate. Show the rest of the world what it takes.
I'm sure if Canada could come up with a way for the US tax payer to do it, they won't have a problem with it.

When I said "there choice" (forgive the spelling) I was referring to the people on the board. It's their choice whether or not they ignore what's happening to the atmosphere.
I don't have an opinion on Malthus specifically as I'm not to familar with "An Essay on the Principle of Population".
But if a country gets industrialized it appears that population growth stablizes.

Put the bottle down, seek help. Thats a start to preventing premature death.

That's a lie! Everyone knows that alcohol is a preservative. ;)
