Title: What Kind of System are your running? Let's Help HTC
Post by: muckmaw on August 14, 2002, 10:55:10 AM
I wonder if HTC has these stats compiled somehow. But in another thread, some were discussing the fact that AH's graphics engine is getting a tad long in the tooth. (Just a bit)

The question is, how far can they raise the system requirments, and still maintain the bulk of their player base.

Let's give HTC an idea as to what we are running, and perhaps this will lead to the development of a better game for all.

My System:
Dell Dimension
1.9 Gig Intel Pent IV
256 Megs Ram
GeForce (something) 64 Megs Ram on Card
Turtle beach Santa Cruz Sound Card
19" Monitor
Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS

Average Frame rate in MA=74

Pentium III - 800Mhz
17" KDS Monitor
394Mb of RAM (3x128Mb)
Creative Audigy Gamer
Hercules GeForce DDR-DVI
Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital joystick (the non-force feedback)
(edit) - I use a 56k dial up modem for gameplay, for right now
OS: XP Pro (Full Version, not Upgrade)
Dumb question guys.  How do you find out the framerate?

Muck, looking at my sys.  would any number be about "average" for my Framerate?  I realize the larger the number, the better.

I'm no computer expert, but with all that ram, I would say you should be running at least 65 average.

(Keep in mind, I've had my FR drop to 40 in Large Furballs)

Maybe it's me but so far, everyone who has checked in has a High-end system. I'm no expert, but it from the replies so far, we can support a more complicated game engine.

Pleae keep those stats coming. Maybe this will give HTC the data they need.

(God knows, they're probably terrified to put up a "Pop-Up Question" when we log in again. Remember the war that started on the BBS?)

just fyi but I think HTC already  knows.
THere was a poll about it.. (you know, counted poll)

If he needs an update it'd be easier to post a poll that automatically calculates the results, instead of having to read through this (what may become very long) post.

I think alot of puters above have too much memory. Most PCs dont need more than 256MB unless you are using it for special reasons (like database or something other) as well. 256 is plenty then again  memory is cheap these days.

There is no such thing as too much memory.
For smooth sailing in Windows XP and newer progams, 256 is not plenty, its just barely enough.

-Pentium IV 1.4 Ghz
-1 GB RAM
-GeForce 3 64MB video card
-19" KDS monitor
-Thrustmaster Fox 2 Pro FF joystick
-Cable modem through Cox cable
-Windows ME
-Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound, with 4 speaker surround sound + subwoofer
-40 GB HD

I get a monitor limited 75 FPS frame rate.  It is rock steady at almost all times.  On extremely rare occasions, fr might drop slightly below that, but anything below 60 fps would be so rare that I can hardly remember the last time it happened.  I suspect that with a different monitor, my frame rate would be far beyond 75 but why bother.  Game runs smoothly at all times and I have never had the CTD problem that others have suffered.  Before the last patch, I would occasionally (maybe twice a day) get a CTD when hitting the runway button from the hangar.  The last patch seems to have fixed that though.  In short, I cant complain about frame rate, lag, warpiness or CTDs.  Well, actually there are the occasional warpers but not common enough to really be annoying.  This system and connection seems to handle AH very well.

Only thing I really need is a new microphone, as anybody that has ever heard me on voice comms can attest!:D

Come on, be real.  Think about all of the higher resolution graphics, XP, Photoshop 7.0, and you realize that 256mb ain't toejam.

Best advice I ever got....Buy a $10.00 Mic from radio shack.

Works better than any $40.00 heaset/Boom mic I ever owned.

I think my system wins so far :)

Anyway, with all this data that so many have posted, there seems no obvious reason as to why the graphics engine cannot be expanded to something of more warbirds 3.. or Il2 standards.

Correct?

PIII 933 MHz
512MB RAM
GF2 MX
Sound Blaster Live!
Windos 2000 Professional Finnish
Samsung SyncMaster 950p 19"
CH F-16 CombatStick + CH Throttle + CH Pro Pedals
Dual ISDN 128k

This system is faster in Windows usage than my work pc IBM 1.6GHz 256MB Win2k, IBM sux! :) OTOH this clearly shows that 512MB RAM is reasonable in Win2k.

Homebuilt Special

Athlon 950
A7V Motherboard
GeForce2 MX 32 MB
384 Megs of Ram
20 Gig Western Digital HD
Sound Blaster Live
Win 98 SE

In 1024X768 I get an average of about 40 to 50 FPS, in a furball sometimes it drops to 20-25 but still very playable.

I for one do not want to see HiTech hold back on the upgrades because of antiquated systems that are owned by some players.
I also realize that some of us do not have the funds or resources to immediately build Uber Machines...

I saved up my money, waiting almost 6 months , in order to build the system I currently have...  The only reason I upgraded was because of this game...  It was well worth it IMHO.  :)

My original system shot craps, cpu fried...
I went to my business computer (Dell) and started flying...  I used the Dell for the interim
Although my FR were horrido, I still enjoyed the game.  Sure, I was not a lethal threat to anyone in the MA... But then even at the new frame rates I'm not a lethal threat to anyone...

Original System Specs.

450 mhz
ASUS K5 MB
256 ram
Voodoo3
Frame rates ran in 30's and 40's

Interim System Specs

Dell
433mhz
onboard sound & video
Frame Rates ran in teens

New System Specs

1.73 Gig
512mb 2700 ddr ram
Geforce2 gts 64mb
Maxtor 7400 rpm HD
Frame Rates in 60's  rarely dropping in high 40's in smoke/furballs

466 Celeron (eek!)
16mb Voodoo 3
SB PCI 128
196mb RAM
17" acer monitor
Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold USB (logitech wingman 'checked out' after 2 years of reliable thrashing)
fargin dialup (verizon is evil!)
no overclocking, no custom work
FPS run 20's-70's, with no rhyme nor reason.
MA pings 160-200, occasionally somehow down to 120 or so.

okay, this isn't exactly state-of-the-art, but, hey, I have fun.
CTDs are the rule rather than the exception in fixed gun emplacements, or when buff formations lawndart. beyond that, it all works fine. I run 1024x768, 16 bit color unlimited framerate. Also occasionally use a Dell Latitude ( I think), anyway, laptop with 766 cpu with no goodies whatsoever- my humble POS is a monster compared to the laptop.

hub7

Athelon XP 2200 Palomino

1.5GB PC2700 DDR

ECS K7VTAS KT333 MB

GF4 Ti 4600 Video

Cable connection

and I can only get 25-35 FPS, and it drops to the teens as soon as I get into a fight at 1024x768 res.

Side note:  I run at 100+ FPS in WB 3.0 with same exact settings with a much higher resolution???
