What plane had best turnrate at sustained turn speed ?
What plane had tightest turning circle at sustained turn speed ?
just curious
-
Yak-9U?
-
is this a question or a riddle? - if i had to guess i'd say (excluding biplanes) an Oscar, or Maybe a Zeke. if i had to analyze the situation, i'd be too lazy to do it, but i'd bet the answer varies depending on altitude & fuel load.
also, by
sustained turn speed
do you mean turning rate, as in degrees/second, or do you mean sustained IAS?
-
he asking about turn rate, not turn radius.
Actually Russian Yak series had good turn rate.
You can feel it in AH too.
-
I was asking for the maximum turn rate and minimum radius...
Not corner speed, just simple sustained turn speed. The one you get by engaging full WEP and pulling the stick to the edge of stall. After couple of seconds, you will be turning at sustained turn speed.
It is not a riddle, I am just curious.
Also, how about WW1 planes ? What was their turn rate and turn radius ?
-
for WWI planes i'd say on the Fokker Dreideker although, due to the rotary engine or the Sopwith Camel/Snipe could turn to the right better than any fighter...come to think of it, I'd bet the Feisler Storch turned in a tighter radius than any WWII plane i've read about, but there are a lot of WWII biplanes i dont know much about. Charles Lamb, a Swordfish pilot, slashed 2 Cr. 42s using the sustained mauverability of his plane to fly them into the H2O...i guess you're probably thinking about monoplane fighters, tho...

I distantly remember a 100ft as a turning radius of a WW1 fighter.
In DoA Sopwith Camel was a better turner than Fokker DrI, especially if yoyos were involved. But Halberstadt (two seater) turned tighter than Camel ! Some think it was a poor FM though ;).

Turn rate = degrees pr. time unit right?
In AH: A6M2, A6M5, Hurricane I, Hurricane II/Spitfire I, Spitfire V, FM-2/N1K2/Spitfire IX, etc etc....in this order approximately.
Better monoplane turners we still are about to get: Well, the Oscar, the Nate and maybe some more.
Then the Biplanes....Gladiator, CR42, even Swordfish...
The Storch is of course an uber turner, but not much faster than an M16...
