Title: Medieval: Total War
Post by: Creamo on August 16, 2002, 04:52:36 PM
Excuse me if i missed a post on this, as certainly someone has played it and might have mentioned it.

People had a fit over a game very similiar, Combat Mission?, but the graphics were hideous. I couldn't get into it.

However, if you get a chance, get this demo and play it. (its in the PC Gamer disks in the Sept. issue) The whole time i was in the tutorial, I was thinking what a great tank/infantry game it would be. To adapt this to a WWII era, would sell a million copies and ruin what's left of your free time. It's a awesome game format I will be getting into for sure, and I really only liked flightsims till now.

the strat and view system is really, really cool.

On the LOTR DVD they mentioned that they wrote a program that allowed them to send 2 CG armies against each other and that each indivdual soldier would fight independently. You will see a lot of this in "The Two Towers".

This sounds like the beginning of the next generation of games.

Combat mission 2 "Barbarossa to Berlin" will be released on the 20th of September. You will have to get that one. A friend of mine has litterary been counting the days to that release for the last 6 months.

Personally Im waiting for the similar game from Mattox games. That one sounds like what you are descrbing.

When that one comes Im gonna rob someone to be able to afford a new computer. I'll probably get caught  though. But since this is Sweden, I probably wont even have to go to jail for it (no previous record, good job, stable social life etc etc), my career will be pretty screwed though, but that doesnt matter either since this is Sweden and I can live on welfare...which is fine because I would have to quit my job anyway so I can have more time to play the new game...

Points taken on gameplay, although I find it hard to believe the next version of Combat Mission can be THIS good in strat and graphics, but I’ll certainly take a look.

And Hortland, I miss the foreign computer cost bottleneck. Is it they are more expensive there?

My ex-roommate who I work with still, build systems that just scream by today's standards for like $700 USA bucks. We have a 75% off discount with FED EX, so 3 day shipping overseas is like $30 TOPS. Pry cheaper.

Why would anyone outside the USA in AH  wait and pay exorbitant  amount of money for a computer? Or you saying just need time for more $?

Anyway, if this “Total War” engine/game code/ company makes a WWII game, they are going to be rich. I think the guy from IL-2 is going to spearhead this lucrative market. Whether it’s as good as what I just played, we’ll see.

Is this similar to Shogun: Total War?

Yes.

I lost the strat with that, had no clue on Japanese tribal squad tactics, lol, but  the Medieval era was more accessible.I was tricked into playing Age of Empires once.

WWII format? Shaaawing.

Cool... I looked at Shogun a few years ago but never purchased it. It's sitting on the shelf at Staples now for $10. :)

It's based on the same engine as Shogun: Total War, which I thought wa very good (Albeit the overall strat a bit weak)

Loved it, when after hiding your cavalry around a hill/forrest, you would lure the enemy forward and the charge the cav in to their rear/flank and watch them fall apart.

I bought Shogun: Total War Warlords Edition a few weeks ago after playing the Medieval: Total War demo. Never really paid much attention to Shogun when it came out as the era was a little different to all the other strat games on the market but glad I did buy it and look forward to the sequel Medieval: Total War

Combat mission 2: Graphics wont be as good. Dont think there will be any strategy, only tactics. Strategy is outside the scope of the game. But its a game you have to buy anyway.

CM1 was good, CM2 will be really good. RPS, the new Mattox game will be the best tactical wargame ever seen.

Here in Sweden you have to pay something like $1000-2000 for a top of the line comp. With me working for the government (lousy pay) and having kid nr2 arrive in late september and paying support to my ex wife...lets just say I wont be able to spend $2000 on a comp any time soon :)

Got the game and have found it to be quite enjoyable. Its been a long time since a game like this has pulled me in, most seem to be cheap clones that fall far short of what pre-release hype promises.
Anyone else out there playing?

Lonz

PS.  only gripe... those "lost factions" that arise from obscurity deep in your kingdom with more and better troops than what that country had when you originally eliminated them.

I think the engine would be great, not for a WWII game, but for a Civil War game.

Shogun is terrific... I'm trying to decide if Medieval adds enough value to buy it as well.

Seems like an expanded Shogun.  I've only played one campaign thru (almost thru, far enough to win then it gets boring), but at least at this point it looks to have a lot more replay value than shogun did.  Seems to be a lot bigger, more countries, and a few more nifty little variables tossed in on top (like holding trade routes with navy, or having those blockaded and suddenly losing 3/4 your income when you really need it.).
