I've been involved with a few threads here about the strat model and bombing etc. and backed off to think for a while and read more.
I think that what it comes down to is what people want from the game when they log in and I'd be interested to know how my "wants" compare with others.
So what am I looking for in the MA ??
Basically I'm looking to fly / drive missions which match the real use of the aircraft or vehicle in a game where my success or failure will impact on the success or failure of the side I'm fighting for at the time. This would apply equally for a fighter mission to intercept incoming raiders or a bombing mission to destroy the other sides infrastructure. A big part of the fun for me is the collective success of the group I'm fighting with - defending a base with 5 or 6 others and holding off the attack, getting a 6 or 9 bomber formation over target, taking a feild with 4 or 5 other GV's.
This emphasis on the team competition aspect is what has led me into the discussions with Wotan etc about the bomber strat situation.
It's obvious though that many folks just want to up a fighter and go find some custom and the impact or otherwise on the "war" is largely imaterial. Thats not to say they are just lone wolfing either, many of these folks hunt together against others with similar aims on the other sides - the furball core perhaps.
Let me be clear I'm not saying either view is right or wrong I'm just curious to understand exactly what the other 300 odd in the MA are there looking for when I join in.
I'm looking forward to the Mission Arena when it comes but I wonder whether it will become another CT or Duelling Arena?? - somewhere you'd really like to go but hey there's no one else there.
If the Mission Arena is the nirvana for the strat potato like me then should the MA change when it arrives ??
When you take your loaded P47 and go blow up the fuel and hangars at a field is it to take the field, stop the other side getting in the air or just to blow stuff up??
I'm curious chaps and chapesses - what do you get out of the MA??

Sparks.... most nites I've got 1-2 hours to play.
Most nights I just want to fight against fighters; the how or where isn't that important. Above, below, co-alt.... whatever plane type.
I think I would like the MT idea but it's going to have to pack some action into the 60-120 minutes I have to give it.
I'm not going to cruise around on a "mission" for 90 minutes with no action. If that's what happens, it's back to the MA.
Just my .02.

Anything but the pizza map.

What I want to see in AH is missions, realistic bombing runs with escorts (long range of course) what I want to see most is 30+ people in the CT. So I don't have to go in the MA to get some action.
And mostof the time the missions won't happen in the MA so what I really want to see there is a field where the enemy has got the numerical superiority, makes it much more fun to fight.

agree with toad... I'm not british so i like a little excitement. I have a couple of hours to play and I don't want to pretend I'm in the BOB spending all of it watching for "jerry".
I want to see a couple of the closer fields with action at em. I want to see 6 or more guys from each side meeting in the middle somewhere or I want to see a carrier off shore to either take off from or defend against. I want to see two or three hotsposts and I don't want to here... "the 40 plane missun to attack their deserted field is now forming at____".
oh.. I also agree with toad that the "missun" arena will get some of my time if it has some action and none if it doesn't. I allready read the book and know how it all comes out and why.
How do I judge action? I guess kills/hour is a good one. anything less than about 6/1 is not gonna be much fun generally... there are exceptions... 5 prolonged and hard fought victories in an hour are more exciteing than 6 vulches and then nothing the rest of the hour but.... it's a good general statistic overall.

told ya what i wanted oedipus (say hi to mom for me) but... I will settle for an imbalance on one side or the other so long as i have good fights. I did not participate in any land grab. The fights between the carrier and then the field further north started out in the classic way I like em... about even numbers. In the pizza map you take what you can get... any fight that you are not being gangbanged is a blessing... heck any fight in the map is a blessing.
When the numbers got too lopsided I amused myself by stealing kills with 4 mg planes like the 51b and fm2 away from my al cannon all the time teammates. it can be a challenge.

I want to see a few squadies to join up with, some fights with somewhere near even odds, and low enough "density" to prevent warping. Otherwise, I will try to spoil a field capture, or work the fringes of the Giant Furball.

I log into the MA, I look for squadmates and wing up with them. I love all aspects of the game, from hunting to knuckle-whitening NOE raids. I can't wait for the Mission Arena, where success or failure will be somewhat more meaningful. It will add to the realism and make the role played more vital.
I'm not much of a furballer. Sure, I'll mix it up, but I'd rather see that mix happening because I'm escorting a wing of heavies and run into the interceptors trying to down them. The up spit, barely make it off runway only to be smashed into little bits because 4000 enemy are vulching scenario just isn't appealing.
Oh....nekkid chics would be cool, too :)

variety!!! we must have variety!
many different flavors of nekkid chicks :)

oedipus... i am glad that you felt so threatened by 2 or at most 3 of my squaddies in a yak, 51b and spit. It was me, apache and codger and I don't think we were ever in the fight at the same time. None of us made any effort whatsoever to capture any field or destroy anything other than enemy ac so far as I know. I shot as many as 3 guys at one time off the tail of apache and he shot them off mine. towards the end.... any cons that continued to up from that field were just plain stupid or.... didn't care tho.

I check the MA for any Squadmates online - if none of them are there, i go CT.
If I don't have much time I go straight to the CT, because you get instant action there, plus good fights.
Other than that: I'm waiting for the Mission Theater.

If this was the fight at field 108 that was a hoot even though I died repeatedly defending the base :D
I was trying on the Spit V for the first time so was giving it full rundown in what I consider the worst pressure cookers available - a base capped by nme bogies.
As for what I look for, I look for squaddies first to join up with then look to see where the nme is putting pressure and will move there to support the base or up in a buff to hit an nme base that is supporting the assault.
Like most others I'm anxiously waiting for the MIA.

Well a good variety - thanks so far.
It seems there is polaristaion which I percieve (thats only MY opinion) as being stronger than the early versions - say 1.04. A lot of people seem to want to just go fighter group to fighter group but I wonder why then the dueling arena isn't full ??
Obviuosly for those of us that like the mission based flying (NOT base capture - mission based as in organised with a specific task) It's frustrating seeing a huge resource of people in the arena who aren't interested in what we're doing but I suppose thats the variety we have. It does however create the conflicts we've seen on the BBS with ideas to use the new bomber model.

Lazs I really must get over to the con and bring you some warm beer and teach you how to play darts ;) - we know how to live ya know.
But to the point - Lazs - do you think the your and my differing wants from the game are best served in one MA or two separate ones ??
No-one has yet mentioned perks - for those that like to dogfight without regard to a "war" do the perks play a part or are they just incidental ?? Toad ?

"But to the point - Lazs - do you think the your and my differing wants from the game are best served in one MA or two separate ones ?? "
That is a very good question. I have a partial answer. As an MA...I don't think it good to have one arena that is all airstart uncapturable fields where it is one big furball from the same three fields... I also don't think it is good to have an arena where the only way to suceed is in an organized "missun" that has very little or no air combat worth mentioning and the "war" is a thing that takes forever to "win".
I like a mix.. believe it or not. I like what we have but I would like more of the fields, say half, as close as the closest ones. I would like large cities or "area targets" that were the focus of heavy fluffs and escort.. This might work as an "all in one" arena.
the 'missun arena" may give a certain group what they want so far as "organized follow the leader" and "immersion". fighting another plane is all the immersion I want tho. The DA certainly doesn't work for the furball set.
unless it is a difference in skill requirements..... I don't think seperate arenas work. limp wristed realism and full... that works cause they are..... seperate flight models. Sooner or later tho... the guys that have seperate arenas but the same fM's... want to go to where the players are to test their metal.
Oh... I'm not toad (think of me as an ugly, meaner, less bright version) but... I don't like perks. I like an early war area in the arena. and a mid one also... let the uber planes have a "free" day or two at the end of the tour.
I guess it's the difference between somebody liking 'darts" and someone else likeing 5lbs per horsepower.
