ok, when i practice my slap shot on the street, its awesome. but when i practice on the ice i can barley hit the puck. the stick i use on the ice is only like an inch taller the one i practice with on the street.

LOL Joe...
I live in suburb of Kansas City and Pepsi built a great 2 rink facility by our house. It's only a couple of years old and where we live a lot of Northeast Coast transfers are here so it gets good support for adult leagues and getting ice time is not a problem.
My sons school is having a skate night there in 2 weeks....we'll be there (lived in Boston for 16 years....so yeah Bruins rule and Bobby Orr IS a Hockey Diety!!)
Don't know what to tell you about your slapshot, though....maybe try adjusting as you bring your stick back and the angle coming down

are you using the same ammunition on the street and on the ice?
eg: a ball for street play and a puck on the ice? I know this may seem like a dumb question, but you never know.
Of course it is much easier to get good lift and a ball than on a puck.
But if you are using a puck both on the street and ice, check your follow through. It is a much larger factor on ice than it is on the street.
-
Are you on roller blades when you are hitting the puck on the street? If not, your skates on the ice will make you about 3 inches taller. This could be the problem.
For good steet ammunition, I use squashed beer cans. Compress them till there about 1 inch thick. It gives you a good puck sized target, and they loose there energy quickly so there is less of a chance of breaking car windows or the like.
Also, try to have your stick contact the ice about 6-8 inches in front of the puck during your swing, this will cause the stick to flex and give you the good snap your are looking for. This does however tear up the street sticks a little bit.

woa thanks for the info.
im on foot. i use some "active gravity" puck. its about as heavy as an ice puck. it is a little bit thinner though.
i guess i need to buy a longer stick huh. i just baught a new one last week lol. figers.
man cobra i wish i live there. i live 50 minutes away from the closest ice rink. and the leagues suck. there is usually 2-3 teams in the in house fall league.:(
anyone know good website to order hockey stuff from?

another difference between roller hockey and ice hockey is how you hit the puck and/or ball.
In street hockey (roller hockey) it's tough to really load up the stick. I.E. bend it on the ground and springing it loose on the puck.. thus the snap part of the snap shot or slap shot.
In ice hockey it's easy and becomes second nature.
and even though using a longer stick on ice (skates) than on the street (feet) I think it'd be much more productive to wear roller blades when on the street.
For one thing the different length sticks cause differences in how you handle the puck regardless of skates or feet. A lot of forwards and stick handling types prefer the short stick, being more bent at the knees and able to move in and out quickly and possibly hold the puck between their feet.
Defensemen tend to prefer long sticks that give them better reach allowing them to poke check well. (not to mention good for cross checking, but I didn't say that)
IMO you should select a stick length that suits you and your playing style (or planned style if you don't already play) and wear skates on ice and dry land.
One other advantage to this approach is that you'll get used to being on skates when you shoot. Period.
Momentum can be pretty intense with a good slapshot so it's good to learn how to handle while on skates.

also, can some one tell me where to mesure from?
Blue, Green or Red?

as for ordering hockey gear, the best place i have found in my 10+ years of playin hockey here in GA is http://www.oceanhockey.com
As far as measuring you stick..hehehehe...sorry. ..had to say it. the best thing to do is strap your skates on hold the stick normally but with the tip of it on the ground....keep you head straight and cut the stick at chin level that is the best height. Bes t of luck to ya, GO BRUINS
-
so i guess according to your pic you posted..blue is the best way....just cut it under your chin, with skates on
-
Stick should be nose height on feet, chin height on skates
You want to keep your upper hand (left hand if you're a righty and vice versa) real steady. Make sure your thumb and forefinger form a v-shape around the stick and they cannot, i repeat cannot twist. It'll give you blisters when you practice for hours but it's worth it.
Lower hand should be more then halfway down the stick and that too need to be steady through your shot. After practicing I found that my shots tend to have a little more snap to them the lower I go, but the accuracy also goes awry. Where you put your lower hand is more a personal preference.
Go BRUINS! (but they suck cuz they let Billy Guerin go!)

Gretzky was know for his wrist shot, not his slap & for good reason. in a game situation you're not going to be given the oportunity to wind up & shoot (except penalty shots) like that w/out some heroic defensman sliding in front of you to take a puck in the kiester & save the shot on goal...wrist shot will get the puck going almost as fast & do so in the bat of an eye & you dont have to take the stick off the puck
-
Some of the best slapshooters I play with don't seem to wind up at all. They raise the stick approximately 2-3 feet off the floor behind them before swinging forward.
Me... I can't do a slapshot to save my life...
oh... I play on wheels with a puck.
-
What do you mean you play on "ice"??? ;)
I played some at FSU with my friends. Typical Florida hockey. Inlines on an old tennis court with a ball. hehe, we were so cheap our goalie equipment was my baseball glove. lol
regardless, it was fun and fantastic exercise. That and soccer. Hell, I'd die if I tried to do either for 5 minutes now. :(

Just remember to "foil up before each game, eh"
Credo of the Hanson Brothers - From "Slapshot" The movie.

IMO Joe Sakic has the wicked fast-release snap shot.
oh.. heel of the blade. but those are general guidelines.
Like I said, offensemen tend to like shorter sticks, defense longer ones.
