Title: Graphic nuances for Hitech to consider?
Post by: faminz on August 22, 2002, 09:41:19 PM
1. The Flak explosions. I just read a Tempest pilots book. they did a lot of flying thru flak. He noted specifically that the explosions were generally black smudges (like we currently have) but close ones had a sharp red flash in the middle. Should be easy to implement? given the code can tell how close the explosion is to the plane (Therefore its bigger!).

2. I saw that in IL2 they are going to implement searchlights. I saw a pic of a circle of intense beams going up into the night from round a base. Perhaps we can have the same with the extra nuance of locking on to a plane and illuminating it until a wild maneuver loses the beam. Sort of like you lose the drones if you fly too wildly!
Be neat if the light could be slaved to the field guns too....

Nice idea's but if the searchlight's were controleld by the ack we'd never be able to break away from them :D

I can already tell how close the flak is by sound and the fact that the black 'poofs' are larger the closer they are.  Waste time to code IMO.

I think most of the AH pilots would prefer not to fly at 'night'.  That's why there isn't any in the MA.

Wlfgng, there certainly is night in the MA.  I have a nice film of a night sortie that I took last week...

Ack bursts should affect the aircraft with a shock wave, even if no real damage is done.  Heavy bomber in Ace High, and fighters as well, ride through heavy flak as if they are on rails,  rock steady.  Bomber gunnery might more closely approximate reality if it was disrupted by shock waves from the flak bursts.

johnnyb.. I guess I've been out on summer too long :)

Godwineson.. that'd be great.

wussock!  The post included the word 'nuance'. Look it up. Im talking about small easy to code changes that increase the immersion and 'reality' of the simulation.
If you dont consider realism to be a goal worth achieving in AH then go and play in the arcades.

I like the idea of planes being buffetted by the flak shockwaves.
That would add a lot of game immersion IMHO.

I really loved B-17 II's flak burst at graphics and sound. :)

AH currently utilizes single source lighting effects in its game

engine so what you are suggesting is a technical impossibility at

this time AFAIK. This is one of those things that HT will probably

implement when GF IV video cards are in the average users

computer. ;)

my point is, if you'd care to read what's there instead of lacing it with what you'd like to think I said, is that it's a waste of code.
Realism, why not give us dirty windscreens, rain, smoke out of exhaust pipes, animated pilots, etc.

There are many other things that I'd rather see the team working on.. like they probably are right now.

things like improved damage display.  I.E.  bullet holes, parts ripping off, cracked glass, oil and grease on winsdshields after blowing somone up in front of you or chasing a smoking con, etc.

1.2meg guncam, showing what Wolfgang wants (http://www.lizking.com/guncam1.mpg)

(the last frame, esp.)

yeah I know... cool stuff but just eye candy IMO.

Priorities. Priorities. Priorities.

FM, DM, STRAT, etc.. should (and I think do) come before eye-candy like upgraded explosions and searchlights.

I don't mean to imply that I wouldn't like those things.. just that they're not as important priority-wise.

100% agree with all these, just add my two to the list.
I must have misunderstood... you obviously DO want more realism!!!

yes, I do want more realism.  but at the proper time with a clear understanding of system restraints.

Priorities.  IMO eye candy isn't the highest priority.
