I have always wanted to know how many Mac guys are activly flying the "other" sim...my guess is that 22% of the vitual pilots are Macintosh users. My question has been answered on a future Mac version, however I think enough interest could help a decision in the next 12 months or so?...PLEASE>>>PLEASE!!!
1)just cc here once so that the count is accurate please.
2) only cc if your REALLY a Sim junkie
thank you all for the particpation.

Gentlemen as i've stated before we are not supporting the mac at this time. It realy dosnt make any econmic sense to support the mac when you have an unknown product, and an unkown subscriber base size. All that supporting the mac at this time would do is greatly slow the devlopment process and make our financial risk greater.

Dale,
I hear you and in some respects your arguments make sense.
I'll agree that adding an additional platform always adds some complexity to the development process.
However, if it were added now rather than later, the complexity would be greatly reduced.
You mention your subscriber base is of an unknown size. We're simply pointing out that it will be smaller even on the PC side without Mac support. People are going to go where they can fly with their friends, unless HTC is going to offer something that's 200% better than its cross-platform competitors. Even in my small world I've pointed out 90 people that will not fly AH regularly because they won't be able to fly with their Mac friends.
If AH were to include Mac support and were to follow historical trends, the Mac userbase would be 10-20%. Now, if you were not to have that 10-20% plus lose the many hundreds of PC pilots who would go where cross-platform support was available, I find it difficult to believe that that is not worth one Mac developer's salary.
And a word of warning: it would be easy to put yourself into a position of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Say that 12 months from now you decide to give in and hire a Mac person. Say during that time Playnet has come out and is outstanding and WB 3.0 has also made tremendous strides. Now, because of the delay and the other outstanding choices available, you're not going to get the 10-20% Mac userbase, and you'll be telling us, "See, I told you there weren't enough Mac users."
All this said Dale, it's certainly your game and you have the right to make whatever decisions you wish and we'll respect that. However, that doesn't prevent us from urging you to take another look at the business case. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Not really. I run VPC to dual boot into NT4 or Win95, for business apps, mainly. For a game with lots of 3D, forget emulation.
Any hardcore sim guy is going to buy a PC box anyway. How many sim titles are available for the Mac versus the PC? I rest my case.
You're joking, right? Sure, it used to be the case. No longer, bud. While I was at Con, I saw Rainbow Six, and thought it was a really cool looking game. Well guess what? It's in beta for the Mac. Fly! is coming. Halo. Playnet, WB3, Falcon4, SC, etc., etc. I can pop a Voodoo3 in my Mac, and with the new G4, I can put AGP 3D cards in it.
But if you mean the aisle upon aisle of cheap, useless 3D shooter games I see at CompUSA, then you can have them.
With Playnet and WB3 coming out for the Mac around the same time as AH, I figure I can do without AH just fine. I do think it was a mistake, HT, and will rear its ugly head later on to bite you in the bottom.
Over at WB, the current figures as of early this month (with a non-equal client and no 3D) show Macs bring in $30,000 a month. That's $360,0000 a year. And that's with many Mac customers NOT EVEN FLYING due to problems, and many not flying out of priniciple because they aren't up to standard, and a generally eroded Mac players base. Now, I have developers working for me, and even throwing in insurance, etc., you'd be hard pressed to eat up HALF that revenue with development overhead. If your game is built with portability in mind from the outset, you can get by with one Mac developer, as the billing, web sites and other features are written easily with cross-platform methods.
Given a game with equal development and cutting edge features at a fair price, you'd easily pull in enough to cover development and contribute to the overall revenues. But I suspect this is no different than WB in the beginning, when HT had to be convinced of the potential of a Mac port. Unfortunately, this is a little different than when WB began. There's more competition now, and the competition all are giving the Mac a fair shake.

So from the looks of all these posts the mac users and hundreds of PC users that have mac users as friends are going to kill AH even before it gets off the ground.
A projected user base of "maybe" 20% is using thinly veiled threats of "If you don't include us in the initial release we are going to kill your program."
Don't think that is true? Go back and reread some of these posts.
I've never had much of an opinion of Mac users in general, but after reading all the garbage spewing forth here and I have to ask are you guys proud of this type of attitude?
------------------

I have both a PowerMac and a 400MHz Pentium II PC. My preference is absolutely the Mac. The only reason for me to have the PC is that some games I play are not supported for Mac. When support to Mac is available i prefere to use the Mac. The Mac means easy and reliable use, and far less configuration and operating problems. So please port to Mac as soon as possible.

It's not a threat, it's a statement of fact. Many squads have stated they will only go to games that support both platforms and that statement is made with the full support of the squadron's PC users.
How is that a threat?

Funked,
Would you consider it fairly likely that HiTech wouldn't be particularly averse to adding another PC developer?
That would double his development costs and add how much revenue? Zero.
The problem as we've stated is the unrealized revenue won't be just 20% as it won't be just from Mac users.

You just hit on one of the problems with adding Mac support. Rainbow Six for Mac is in beta, but it's been out for the PC for about a year. For a dual-platform online game are you going to hold up a release while waiting for the Mac version to get finished? While Mac support may create a larger potential user base, it also creates a gating factor that can have a real impact on revenue.
Rolo
-
People can argue this point until they are blue in the face but it won't change anything. If the Apple is no longer a viable platform then it just isn't. If they can get their numbers out of the low single digit percentages that would change things overnight.

I am the XO of a squad that was origionally the "green apples", hence the all mac nature. Still, about 40% atleast of our squadies are mac users. While AH is looking good, I think that we're gonna be considering the "other" sim comming out real good. And, if the "other" sim is all its cracked up to be, AH is gonna have to really blow my socks off.

Rolo,
It's only that way because the game developers make it that way.
Why does Bungie do a simulataneous release on Mac and PC for every product they ship? Why did idSoftware do a simultaneous release of Quake 3 Arena? (Actually the Mac release was slightly ahead of the PC)
They do it because they planned properly and they wanted to do it.
The games that have the Mac port show up a year later are those where the Windows programmers wrote with no thought of cross-platform, making life a PITA for the guys who end up doing the port.

When you plan on selling millions of games almost anything becomes a viable platform. When you plan on selling thousands, that changes things.

Some people just have no clue.
It seems Bungie, Id, Playnet, Epic, Westlake, Terminal Reality, G.o.d., do.

My guess is that right about now things are pretty tight financially at HTC...or at least there is a large unknown factor of what the new player base will be capable of returning in the way of revenue. While it's true that adding Mac players to their player base would increase their revenue, the money they would have to lay-out at this point in time to develop AH for the Mac would thin their resources, and only make their whole venture more risky.
What's the solution...? Add programming for the Mac at a later date when they are on more solid ground financially...Or is there a possibilty that there is enough talent and incentive in the Mac community to have someone, (or ones,) willing to work on a volunteer basis to port the program over to the Mac until HTC can stabilize itself.
I don't know anything about business or software, so I don't know if what I'm suggesting is something that is completely ludicrous...Just trying to help our Mac only Brothers up into the tower.

Though our squad is currently in limbo, all except one remain on the mac. We are looking for a cross-platform alternative to the discontinued MacAW...
I understand things may be balancing on a rope right now for HTC, but what about later? Is AH being written in code that will be portable to the mac at a later time and made cross-platform compatible? Unlike Kesmai, are you keeping other potential markets in mind NOW, before it's too late?

WOW! its been a long time since I left this thread. about a month or more. I'm happy to see that everyone is getting along so well! The only real solution to this problem should have been a NON issue simply by programing AH in an Open GL. Its a mistake that will cost in the future.
I love Computers, both Mac and Pc's and I really hate to see the miopia thats happening by only programming for the PC. The Pale Horses are about 50% mac and thats $ not in AH future.

Bronco,
Open GL is just a GRAPHICS API. Even though AH used OGL for graphics you still have to rewrite the rest of the game engine for Mac. Just like you "Mac guys" to try and oversimplify things (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Btw all you "Mac guys" complaining about pc:s beeing hard to configure and "downtime", this is the downside about having a configurable and open architecture as opposed to Apple. If you don't know how to configure your system or install software and hardware properly you obviously is going to have a defunct system.
I'd choose the the configurability of the PC any day over the Mac's idiot proof OS where you are limited to what the programmers allows you to do. But that's just my opinion. If you don't like "getting under the hood" of you machine and getting you fingers dirty I guess the Mac is an alternative if you can afford it and stand the lack of software.
I think the comparison with cars is quite good:
Mac: Japanese sports car, expensive and new design, no problems to get to run, just turn the key. Great around some bends but a bit boring to drive in the long run. Looks the same as any other car and not a lot of accessories.
PC: Muscle car, cheap to buy and old design but a lot of power. Requires a bit of skill to get to run properly but a lot more rewarding when it does. Lot's of accessories to personalize you car after you needs.

I have no idea why I am posting to this thread, especially after the beating the mac guys have given me, and I don't think I attacked them.
HTC has limited their choices of online flight sims.
Downtown didn't limit their choice of online flight sims.
How about HTC Makes enough money by pandering to us PC Guys the next year, HT hires the GOD of MAC Programmers to get AH up to Par with the PC version.
Then you MAC guys will be thumbing your noses saying "Nope you chose not to support us from the get go, now suffer."
The that self fullfilling prophecy from above still comes true.
Hitech if you read this are you hiring, I'm not even defending you and I am taking a beating, I usually get paid for that.

HT, I understand your reasoning, but with two competitors offering concurrent Mac releases within months of you going gold, I still think you're making a mistake. Well Mookie, I don't think it's all that negative of a signature line and like I said before it has nothing to do with anyone here, the fact that your handle comes close to part of the line is unfortunate.
I'm not all that toon oriented either (Would rather be flying a sim and evading bullets, but mindless humor hever hurt anyone) however I do have kids and that's how I picked up the words 'idgit' and 'mook'.
Had never put them together until one day I was driving down a busy street and made the comment "I'm surrounded by idgits and mooks!" after getting cut off for about the 6th time by some fool in a SUV, my oldest daughter started laughing 'cause she thought it was funny and it kinda stuck.
'Idgit' is from an old Warner character and 'Mook' is from a current Disney character and the ascii character is from a Anime series.

What is it with these Mac guys that make'm so errie. Is it a cult thing?
Seems like some are trying to use the JEDI mind trick, " You *WILL* port to the Mac now...Porting to the make is easy...These are not the Droids you are looking for..."
Oz posted in a different thread a few words of advice that hold true here:
" I find it best not to unleash the FULL oddity at once..."
Some of these posts have loosely veiled threats and a few hidden 3D messages I think.
( If you stare at them long enough (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif))
HTC has already stated, more than once, that *AT THIS TIME* it is not financially feasable.
Translation:
*AT THIS TIME* there is NO money to do so. Once the pay subscriptions roll (ya know, from us Crazy PC users) & the money starts rolling in, debts get paid, salaries get covered, & maybe a little profit will be left to throw back into
Mac development.
Unless...
1. There are one or two extraordinary MAC programers in the area of HTC offices that would like to volunteer their spare time, *possibly* get paid at a later date ( (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)) to speed up the process.
2.The only other speed-up alternative would be to send check or money order payable to
HTC Inc.
for the
AH MAC PROGRAMMER FUND.
(This will give HTC a true gauge of MAC interest) I'm sure if the fund amount doesn't reach a certain point within say a month or so, then all money will be returned.
Bottom line, unless you help the *cause* with one of the 2 ways above, then you will just have to wait.
squeak, moan, complain, threaten all you want, It doesn't help the financial limitations currently present.
Hitech and company are no dummies. They are the clever folks who created Warbirds, once THE greatest online air combat sim and Aces High looks to top that. In my opinion AH will be successful with or without Mac development. The strong response from the online community so far proves that.
Threatening to boycott is a kin to shooting yourself in the foot, in essence robbing yourself of revenue that could go towards MAC development AT A LATER TIME.

PS - This is the only thread I have seen to date where someone (Tigger) had to explain their signature Tagline. You MAC peeps need to loosen up...You give me the Heebie Geebees. ( See...Look at the goose pimples on my arm. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif))

FWIW...don't want to flame anyone or denigrate their preferences, just relating personal experience...
I used a Mac at work for 10 years, and bought 2 for home during that period. Not a darned thing wrong with the platform.
In April, TPTB--more accurately TPT Sign My Paycheck--decided my dept. and one other were going to volunteer to go WinTel, since we decided we needed to be able to do magazine-design-and-production-type-things-and-stuff on either platform.
Okay..."Hall! Bangalore!" "Yes, Sarge," says I, saluting, putting on my tin hat, grabbing the bangalore and crawling up to the wire, where sat a tricked out Dell OptiPlex running NTW 4.0.
Fast forward to October 8.
I don't miss the Mac. I won't bash it, but I don't miss it. In fact, I so don't miss it I went out and bought a P166/32/2.0/12x/SB16 ISA from a good friend ($100), picked up a Canon BJC printer ($52 incl. shipping courtesy eBay), found an STB Velocity4400 16MB PCI video card ($69 incl. shipping, found thru PriceWatch), and I'm using the same external 28.8 modem (all I need to fly, and less strain on the old 200W power supply) and--with a cheap, or more accurately free, adapter--my already-on-hand 15" Apple MultiSync monitor with the built-in stereo speakers.
When my student loan reimburses me for my out-of-pocket tuition down payment and book expenses, I'm going to sink it into a BH6/Celeron 400/64MB RAM/new case, cooler & power supply, and maybe a Labway or equiv. Yamaha 724 PCI sound card. At usually under $20, awesome value for money (it's what I use at work, since the Dell doesn't have a game port).
So I get to fly--however badly--now, with the certain hope of flying much better (from the hardware standpoint, anyway) in a few weeks. I've tweaked the video for better frame (installed the card myself (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)), changed BIOS to re-enable an unaccountably disabled serial port, and lived to tell about it (more to the point, so did the computer).
It'll get me 30-40 fps in all conditions (anything over 24 is just gravy anyway), for about $700. And I can overclock if I can pass the gut check. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
I guess what I'm trying to say is, the Dark Side(tm) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) maybe isn't as bad as it's made out to be. It's worked out well for me...just as the Emperor had foreseen. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

"the ideal platform for a sim would be Linux or FreeBSD"
Oh yeah that would be great. Boy, they might get 10 or hell even 20 subscribers!

Nothing like putting a post where it won't get read (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
I happen to use both Macs and PCs equally for home and office work. PC's are far superior for gaming and even for many business apps.
As a matter of fact, the "stable" G3 I use crashes more often than my Win98 PC.

Jedman...I don't have a G3 *7500_120mhz 604 for me*, but I agree with your assessment.
My P3_500/256megs RAM/SCSI/TNT/21" Trinitron Dell Optiplex NT4 box at work is THE most stable computer I've ever owned. Looking forward to Win2K's multiprocessor support.
