Title: How to get better than 1024X768?
Post by: Seagoon on August 23, 2002, 02:07:09 PM
Hi Guys,

I'm hoping you can help me with a lingering problem. I run Windows 98SE on an AMD 750, I have a Herc Prophet II MX card and an RIC DH1564 monitor.

Both my card and my monitor are capable of resolutions higher the 1024x768 and yet that is the highest resolution available under the windows display settings. Unfortunately as a result, resolutions higher than that are grayed out in the AH video options section.

So, does anyone know:

1) If it is possible to get windows to display the higher resolutions I can run as choices?
2) If I can somehow get AH to "un-grey" the higher resolution options?

Thanks for your help.

I 'think" you can edit your AH config/settings file to permit you to try higher ...

However.. with that setup I don't think you will get acceptable performance...

I assume your drivers are up to date?

Regedit

Go to edit and click find

Type in MaxResolution

Click on Find Next

Should display and highlight the MaxResolution line which will have a value in the format of "1600,1200"  or in your case "1024,768"

To alter right click on MaxResolution and click Modify, type in your desired MaxResolution, i suggest putting in 1600,1200 and closing regedit.

At this point nothing will have changed other than the options up to 1600,1200 will now be listed under display settings.
From here its up to you to select a higher setting and experiment to see if your monitor really can display  it.
Remember if you cannot see the screen and it corrupts up at higher res, windows will change back down to last working resolution after 15 seconds.
However if it overdrives your monitor and fails to display anything but garbled rubbish it could potentially damage your monitor, so i would suggest if this is the case either hit escape to force a switch back to lower res or power off the monitor wait 30 seconds to be sure and power it back up.

All of the above will be done at your own discretion of course as registry editing can be a dangerous pursuit , or so they tell me.

The route in registry for me is

HKey_Local_Machine
Enum
Monitor
000

Hi Seagoon,
 Basically what Cav said.
Although I'm suprised that you cannot even see the other resolutions though. Sounds as though you don't have the correct drivers loaded for that monitor. I run a very old Hitachi 20 inch. No drivers seem to be available at all for this so I just experimented until I found a set which worked. During this I had everything from 640*480 max through to 1600*1200 available (Although with much screen flicking and zero instability). Finally settled on 1280*1024 at 60hz & no problems.

I would definately check the drivers are the correct ones before playing with the registry.

Windoze won't let you choose high resolutions if it detects hardware wrong or not at all.

I'd suspect your problem will be gone once you install proper monitor driver to your system, or use a generic one that lets you use higher res.

Thanks for the help guys.

I am now typing on a 1280X1024 screen. I was using the right (manufacturer) drivers for both the card and the monitor, but the higher res choices weren't available until I changed the registry settings per Cav's instructions.

BTW - the higher res hasn't affected my FPS rate or overall performance at all.

Thanks again,
