Title: Dive Bombing In a Stuka
Post by: Tilt on August 28, 2002, 08:55:25 AM
I read recently that even early models of Stuka had automated the controls for use during a dive bombing attack......

"With air brakes deployed and bomb cradle lowered the Stuka would normally start its dive from 13,000 feet (usually into the wind)...........at about  3000 ft a cockpit alarm would sound and the bomb would be released........after which the Stuka would automatically pull out of its dive..............."

I have never read anything on the Stuka and was surprised to learn this (if indeed it is true and not an exaggeration of one aspect or another)............... 13,000 ft seemed high..........

can any of you guys add to this................

how may it be modelled in AH given existing parameters.........

Dive brakes = dive brakes

lowering cradle = open bomb doors

Auto release =

a)"pressing secondary fire button with the cradle down will cause the bomb to be released when alt is next at 3000ft or below"

b)"pressing f6 invokes auto bomb release and pull out"

Auto pull out =

a)" with an empty cradle down the AC is forced to fly at auto climb until its cradle (bomb door) is raised or until its at 2750 ft"

b)" pressing f6 invokes auto bomb release and pull out"

Ju-88 could also use correct dive bombing sights which were showing calculated hit point in ground IIRC.

Hi Tilt,

>I read recently that even early models of Stuka had automated the controls for use during a dive bombing attack......

It worked a bit differently from what you quote.

On enaging dive mode, the Stuka was trimmed for dive, radiator shutters closed etc., dive brakes out, elevator travel limited.

The alarm would just alert the pilot of the release altitude. He'd have to release the bomb manually.

On pressing bomb release, the Stuka automatically recovered by changing elevator trim again. This was not by auto pilot, but just preset trim that worked for any standard dive initiated with the system.

With a heavy pull on the stick, the pilot could override the system at any time.

Thx Ho Hun thats makes a bit more sense.............

working that into AH.........

a)selecting the dive brakes would auto trim for Dive????

b) buzzer at 3k with the dive brakes selected?????

c) auto climb (like auto take off) engaged once bomb is released????

as we know pulling on the stick will override auto climb/take off.
