Title: The Ideal Custom-Made Rifle
Post by: H. Godwineson on August 28, 2002, 09:56:52 AM
Alright all you BB posters who hunt or collect firearms, I have a couple of questions to ask.

If you could have one custom-made rifle for hunting, what would it be?  Give barrel length, stock material, type of sight,  or anything special that meets your special needs or desires.

Or list the one factory manufactured rifle that you have always wanted but have never been able to buy.

I would like to have a rifle built along the lines of the old Mannlicher-Schoenauer carbine.  It would have a 20 inch, hammer-forged barrel, with the hammer-marks polished but still visible with a dark bluing job.  The action would be a bolt-action with a butter-knife style bolt with the bolt rails and feed ramp highly polished and the bolt itself having a jeweled finish.  The stock would be walnut with a fiddle-back figure to the wood.  The butt-stock would have a classic style conficuration, with a full-length mannlicher style forearm with a barrel band.  The barrel would have Ruger style iron sights and would be drilled and tapped for scope bases and rings.

Regards, Shuckins

I saw a book once that described how to make a sniper rifle in the comfort of your own garage using readily-available components, except that you had to provide your own .50cal machine gun barrel.

for hunting I'm still partial to a plain old springfeild .30-06
not to expensive.  go 180 grain for elk, 150 for deer, and those 50 grain .25cal excellerators are just awsome for small game(gotta love any round that goes over mach4)

lol, it's aimed the wrong way.

on the frwy I have no problem with the cars I've already passed.  it's the slow ones in front(in the fast lane) who that would be handy for.

Ripsnort,

I take it that you don't have much trouble with people stealing your parking space, do you?

If it aint got a guidance system or propelled via a rocket motor, I aint hunting with it  :p

In 2 more years, when the statue of limitations are up, I can fully discuss the hunting trip with the TOW missile we bought  :)

1952 j.c. higgins model 50 ( fabrique national 98 mauser 3 bolt )  in .270  with chrome bore, trigger  is fine but replace safety.

i dont like Mannlicher stocks . black 500 year fiberglass. screw iron sights 4X i find is better for actualy hitting things.

can take anyting less than large thick skined african game can be built for under 500 bucks and doesent tear up the meat like alot of the he man cannons.

there is no better all around rifle.

Save yourself some time and trouble.  If you want the one gun which will hunt anywhere in the world, you need one in either a .338 Win Mag, .375 H&H Mag or a .416 caliber (Rigby, Taylor or Rem).

Personally I'd buy a Winchester Model 70:
http://www.winchester-guns.com/prodinfo/catalog/md70/md70.htm
If it's going to be your only gun, you might consider getting one in stainless, although I prefer blued.

Ruger's M77 or the CZ 550 would also be good choices.  All of these weapons use the Mauser-style controled feed bolts.

I own 3 Win M70's in .375 H&H, .35 Whelan Ackley Improved, and .300 H&H Mag (it was a .30-06 which I had rebarreled).  My .35 is actually a pre-'64.  My next rifle is going to be a Win M70 in .270 Win.

If you want any question regarding hunting rifles and calibers answered, post your question here: Accurate Reloading BBS (http://www.serveroptions.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi).  The people there are incredibly knowledgable and very friendly.

And here she is. :) If not the real thing (its like $1500.00 +) then at least an AirSoft version (dweeby) or next time I play paintball I'll be sporting an M4 lookalike paintball gun (they have those now also). I just think its a bad bellybutton looking weapon.

Whoa Rip! :) What is that? Sure looks like a Browning M2 HB or maybe an MG34?

If money is no expense, easy question, Steyr Scout:

For the money, the Savage has the best out of the box accuracy nowadays. Remington used to be, but their rifling has gone to toejam and they arent so accurate out of the box. Browning Stainless Stalker always a good best as well!

Senna.
I owned an Ar-15 tell californias laws went nutty.

the airsoft guns can be upgraded.

You can buy modded guns from these guys
http://www.airsoftextreme.com/store.html

It is more fun then the real one cause you can shoot it in your house or yard, lol and yeah it leaves a pretty good welt.

You can get all metal ones.... better motors, better gears... you name it and it is still cheaper and more fun then the real ones.

I kinda liked my M14.

Winchester 70 was a damn good rifle too.

Nowadays, to give the cats hairballs a place to gather in the corner, there's a Mossberg Defender... just the right package fer a blind old man.

PS, just a thought.  The .338 is a perfect round for anywhere in NA, but most African countries wont let you hunt the Big 5 (buff, lion, leapord, elephant, rhino) with anything less than a .375.  And the .416 is a little overgunned for NA game except grizzlies and moose.  So buy the .375  ;)

I don't get to africa much, for NA (don't get to alaske or canada much either) the old .30-06 is plenty big enough. plus a fairly flat trajectory is a big plus

am wondering how the hell you have 2 m2s side by side on a swivel with off center recoil on a 50 cal it will break you wrists. looks non functional.

or are they syncronized? even if so you get a single dud round and blamo need new wrists.

Put 3 straight shots through the same bullet hole at 200 yards with this.  I'll stick with it:

Thats a .308 yes? Best cartridge there is ;) - Remington makes nice looking rifles, but I've gathered that their rifling of the barrels has really gone to toejam, thus reducing the accuracy. How long have you had that rifle? I presume it came with the Leupold scope? What did it put you back?

Yes, its .308.  I bought it 3 months ago (or so).  I actually opted for a Sprifield Armory scope.  The rifle ran $780 and the scope was $550.
