Title: Airwarrior.....
Post by: hazmatt on July 24, 1999, 03:16:00 PM
I've been flyin AW since the days of GEnie and dos and I'm can't believe how far behind they've fallen. I've been spoiled by the all you can eat pricing and haven't move to WB because I still have memories of $250+ bills on GEnie.  Alot of people are sick of AW but not willing to pay by the hour so I think that there may be a mass exodus from there as long as the cost is flat-rate or reasonable. Can't wait to see it!!  (http://beta.hitechcreations.com/ubb/smile.gif)

Play Air Warrior Dos emulator here:

https://archive.org/details/msdos_Air_Warrior_1992

After it takes a couple of seconds to download put mouse cursor on game screen and right click and look up to open various menus to play the game.

I need to find my Kesmai DOS manual so I can remember how to get off the ground. I saw it the last time I moved and almost chucked it in the trash but now I see why I saved it!

Can you do multiplayer on that AW DOS? I remember there was some sort of head to head thing.

There was.  If memory serves, all it did was blank out everyone in the arena but the two of you.  Seems to me you could still hear the duelists, and vice versa.

No, you could set up your own Head to Head server. I use to do it with my Dad years ago on our dial up connections.

Good thing I didn't join AW until A-O-hell times where it was flat rate, maybe around 1996.

Oldma

You're thinking of the online RR & FR arena's "Dueling Mode"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Warrior (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Warrior)

When it came out of beta on AOL and went prime time, it cost something like $2 an hour (or 2.99) + whatever your phonebill & monthly AOL subscription was..... Then for a little bit, AW went flat rate on AOL, then it went back to the small hourly rate....not sure what happened after that because I was over on Kesmai's new Gamestorm beta testing AW II, which never really went live, that I recall, Gamestorm opened up with free open beta of AW III BigWeek Pacific and I never really returned to AOL...

iirc, Gamestorm cost something like $7 a month or close.... I don't remember, heck at that time, I had 6 free accounts among other things, heh

That Wikipedia Air Warrior page could use some editing and correcting

I started Air Warrior when it was on Gamestorm, after watching my husband (Zeb/Zebedee) playing on and off for a few years before.  In the early days I was more concerned about the phone bills but by then getting my own account was more manageable.  At first I only ever used GVs or went as a gunner in a bomber, but I was soon persuaded to give actual flying a go.  I was never very successful at flying fighters, more often than not getting into a spin and crashing - but eventually tried bombers and loved flying B17s, and never looked back (apart from to check my 6!  LOL)

A lot has happened since then, but I'll never forget how it all started in AW.  :D

Did you ever run what we in my old AW Squadron The Specialists called "The Death Star". Where you could have a guy man each gun in a B-17?

Those were fun.

I was Ditto in AW also. When I made the switch to AH there was already a Ditto here so I started with AWDitto. Then started my own squad called the Knights Cross, that is where the KCDitto comes from. After a few months I got an email from AH that the name Ditto is available if I wanted it, so I switched.

BIG WEEK in AW was my first scenario also. My computer could not handle that. I remember being in a FW190 and having a perfect head on pass on a massive bomber formation. Then all the ICONS appeared and my computer screen froze and when it recovered I was past the formation..... Then of course I got jumped by P-47s.  That sucked.

That has also occurred here in AH a time or two over the years.

Good times   :rofl

I gunned for Spiff in Longbow apart from one flight I think after I accidentally bailed out!  I had some sort of control pad and had programmed BAIL right next to BALL (for jumping to when gunning).  :D

Oh yes!  After I became a Game Assistant and had to patrol all of the arenas, I started spending some time in the RR arenas - I'd only ever been in FR until then.  Deathstars were very popular there and we had some crazy times doing some very stupid (but fun!) things..... like sitting on the end of a runway shooting pilots as they spawned, or parking up inside a hangar and shooting it down from the inside!  That sort of activity never happened in FR LOL!

Then there was using B17s as turn fighters - Spiff often did that and I would be in the Nose gun doing the shooting.  Good times.... <Sigh>  :)

All of you old Air Warriors need to come fly Scenarios and "Target for Todays" with your other fellow old Air Warriors.  :aok

Scenarios were invented in 1992 in Air Warrior (Doktor Gonzo's "Indian Ocean" being the first), and we keep the tradition alive.

There are two coming up:

-- Jan 26th; "Leyte, 1944".  It is a late-war battle in the Philippines involving air combat, bombing, attack, and antishipping, with P-38's, P-47's, F6F's, B-25H's, and B-24's vs. Ki-84's, N1K2's, Ki-61's, Ki-45 (as Bf 110C's), and Ki-67's.
https://ahevents.net/index.php/events/target-for-today/current-or-next

-- Feb 16, Feb 23, March 2, March 9; "Nuisance Raids 1942".  This battle will pit Spitfires, Typhoons, and Bostons of the RAF against Bf 109’s, FW 190’s, and Ju 88’s of the Luftwaffe in a series of coastal raids and combats over the Channel.

I was in the Doolittle Raid some 25 yrs ago,(I think)  and I always thought that was the first. Original plan was to launch from carriers but there were so many the carrier crashed and we had to launch from shore somewhere.

Hey Brooke,

Is your scenario list complete?  I was looking for one that I flew with squaddies at the time, I think the Screaming Meanies in early Aces High, but it may the been with the 69th Shepherds Fold (Air Warrior).  It was quite a few years back, and we flew F4u's and F6f's off a carrier hunting for a theoretical German Carrier on the Norwegian coast as I recall.  At the time it was my motivation to learn carrier landings.  One interesting aspect is that we had a limited number of F4us, and when we lost them we then went to F6f's.   Scenarios now are my favorite part of Aces High, and I mostly fly MA to practice my next ride in scenarios or FSO.  For most of my flight sim "career" big chunks of sit time at the puter were hard to come by.

I didn't have to pay a dime for AW3 during Gamestorm... cause I was a volunteer techie with Vette..

I can't even remember my handle, but seems like I was with a squad called the -==99th==- We got together one year and went to the Lone Star flight museum down in Galveston. Guess that would have been around 1998 or 1999.. memory is a little fuzzy.

Anybody remember Fighter Duel and that arch?   Early 1990s.   You had to build a TCP/IP environment over dialup to accomplish your duel appointment.   Then you would log the results in the Fighter Duel Ladder on the BBS.   Ah, Fighter Duel, the "Flying Instrument Panel!"
Title: Re: Airwarrior.....
Post by: TequilaChaser on January 11, 2019, 07:39:06 AM
Still have my "Fighter Duel" CD, LOL

Yeah, EAGuru and the EA online campus, with those damn EA demanding that the complete Staff regardless if Paid or volunteer, had to keep taking exams/test and be logged in while on duty   being a MOD, GA or Trainer...

Yes Helen, you and G-man were my "Final check-off/ride officers" for up and coming GAs... I had KGann, myself at times and 1 or 2 other Trainers doing the same for new trainers...during that time well even before EA came, we actually Trained the Trainers, so all were on the same page / knowledge and training new players in the same manner/way/training session...

My last AW staff database shows over 1200+ of all currently active and retired/formal staff members (along with your real names, AW cpids and alternates and your addresses, phone numbers, what Bwanas you had and if you were paid staff, volunteer staff, the dates you started and/or retired, etc etc) Snowman (SM) along with Glint and Spiff were near the top and Spiff was CO of the GAs.... I accepted the Mentor CO position of having final decision over whether a GA or Trainer made it through....

But enough of that....

I always found it funny how SM would go out and make new squads/help start new squads and ask others to merge with them, then most of us ended up being Damned....miss those blitzkrieg runs we did....

That's what I love about FSO and scenarios....

Cheers

TC

I only did the Mac AirWarrior beta in the late 90s... "HOSS"(Kesmai guy?) made everyone go FR for that one. I think it was on Gamestorm for a bit before it went to AOL for a while before the shutdown. That free beta Mac AirWarrior used to cost me the equivalent of 15 US cents a minute dialup (today's prices or thereabouts) from Ireland (the Irish Telco did not give out a flat rate for Internet access back then). I would not have missed it for any dollar in hindsight... I loved that A-26.

Check out me old AAR on the "BOG III" that was run back then (web site is still hosted by that ISP near twenty years later). The small "film" GIFs or icons on the page are the links to the AARs:

There are some game sites that you can still DL later versions. But I doubt it can be run MP. I still have install exes for a few versions. Including the last version.

Damn it! I mean Damned it!
This thread makes me want to get a PC and stick in order to get shot down 240 to 270 times in row. Damn you people!
Can you still play this game with just a stick and pedals? Or do you need all the Buck Rogers VR/nerdware stuff to thrive. Xmas is coming and my wife thinks that I want a home weather station or a new set of metric tools. I might have to trick her into rethinking those ideas.

The VR helps me with my poor gunnery and lacking SA. You can get a VR and a card that will run it for prob 300 total.

Check out Rift S or Quest 2 on Ebay looks to be around 150.

For a video card I've done well with a 1070 looks to be under 100.

I used a I7 4770 for a long time too which you can get for a complete system:
Dell Optiplex 9020 Mini Tower Desktop PC, Intel Core i7-4770-3.4 GHz, 32GB Ram, 1TB (1000GB) SSD Drive, WiFi, DVD-RW, Windows 10 Pro (Renewed) $197

So I'm guessing you could get all the eye candy for around 500 if that helps.

It’s all good just that. Some people still use just mouse and keys.

I haven’t taken the vr plunge myself but I use a 55” 4K TV as my monitor.

This does help, Hazmatt. Thanks so much!
Frankly, I'm shocked I don't need 3K like I did back in 94 or whenever to get up in the air, $500 is great. $1 97 for Windows seems absurd-can't I just throw my Win98 CD in and upgrade that? I think I'll wait on the VR as my gunnery and SA did little for me with my "pray and spray" technique. Give me a Zeke and a furball and I'll hit something sometimes.

Of course I kid about the win98 CD....I have a Windows 7 CD around here somewhere.....

Oh man! 4K TV's are getting cheap. Thanks for that.

It has helped my gunnery somewhat now that stuff is much bigger. I shoot like Mr. Magoo anyway still. I guess only downside is I have to cap it at 50 FPS with the best resolution. I can use lower resolutions and get up in the 120’s but the image quality is reduced on the lower ones.

Uh it's a complete system with 32g  of RAM and a 1TB SSD. It comes with Windows 10 pro installed for $197

And you thought my SA was bad. Take a gander at my reading comprehension, pure crap!

Was just over at Dell.com taking notes to slip into my wife's calendar. I think I might be a moving target soon.

I've bought some amazon refurburbs and had good luck with it. Think there's also a 90 day return policy. I don't see a reason to spend a bunch if you're just looking to get back in the air. That system is more then enough on CPU, RAM and storage and comes with windows installed.

Heck you might be able to play it with the onboard video card but there's no reason to if you can get a 1070 or something comparable for less then 100.

You could tell you wife you need a tv for the bathroom and then steal it and use it for a monitor :)

I'm just stick and throttle. Having a good time. After watching some vids with VR,.. that's a gotta have thing for me.....eventually.

I think I saw it in a magazine, maybe a gaming magazine? People used read stuff back in the day, not watch 30 second videos. No wonder the youngsters have a shorter attention span then a goldfish. I wonder how many people under 40 have read a book of a few hundred pages and finished it...

Ah so true. My son is 13 and longest read for him was "Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy", over 800 pages. Trilogy of "Lord of The Rings" and many others. He loves books and that came by example of his parents. No smartphone, he don't even want one.

People have even been taking pics of him and posting them in social media, wondering how that age of young boy sits in a park and reads book instead of fiddling some zombie application.

Here is another blast from the past:

https://www.paperbackswap.com/WarBirds-Story-Far/book/0958519498/

Still have this book sitting on my shelf.  This was just before AH.  Even have a Warbirds sweat shirt awarded to me when I had won a dogfight with HiTech.  He used to hold contests online and award winners with real merch.  Also have several "campaign" pins.  I remember flying halfway across the country to attend a Warbirds convention...different world.

546 pages. That is a book.  What was the book about? Gameplay? dev stuff?

All the above, plus a synopsis of the largest squadrons at the time, WWII pilot stories, a break down of each aircraft, tactics/tips, history of the game from AirWarrior to Warbirds in 1999 (including the resignation of HiTech and staff from IMagic to form HiTech Creations), the Warbirds community in various countries, Warbirds events, etc.

Great bit of history filling in the AirWarrior to Aces High progress and how much Dale has contributed to the genre.

Plaed AW when we had to pay per hour. Then it was Free to playon AOL. Still got 100s of films of flying somewhere on a USB. Played as Yipi then on the B side. Their was a glith where I flew without a cockpit for a few years but I could see better so flew like that lol. In AW 3 the graphics got pretty good and I thought there noway it can look better than that then

I’m now glad my 286 wouldn’t pull AW during dos, 12fps.  I played very little. I flew as Arrow in Dos/pre-AOL. I heard of some were at i er $500. 500 in the late 80s was a mortgage payment. Today thst would be about $1500.

And we were going to play no matter what. Divorce may have followed.

Amazes all of us that people complain about $15 flat rate, which is 50 cents per day. Reminds me of old timer stories of “I had to crawl through a desert of crushed glass and razor blades just to walk 5 miles to school.”

I feel I have to start my posts with a disclaimer now so it doesn't start a new dumpster fire.
"These are my opinions and my situation only" I'm stating this from my point of view. Most likely I am the only one in this situation and I am not saying that anybody else is in the same situation or that anybody else has the agrees with my opinions or point of view."

I think the difference for me is that back then I was single and if I ran out of money it only affected me.

These days I have 3 kids and a wife. If each of them wanted an account to play together as a family that would be around 900 a year. I guess I could take it from their budget for new clothes but they might start looking funny when they were all wearing clothes 3 sizes too small. lol

There are too many other options these days that have some level of FTP. They can play WoW up to lvel 20 or WW2 online with limited selections, or Warthunder or whatever. We don't play together enough to justify spending that money when there's other things it could be spent on like new shoes. I also find myself playing less and less so after a while it doesn't work out to 50 cents a day.

I really wish there was a FTP option and some sort of way to attract and keep new players. I know it's not going to happen and there are lists of reasons why it won't work. That said if nothing changes, we all know where it's going to go. It was a fun ride while it lasted!
