Title: Flying Styles..
Post by: Hangtime on April 24, 2001, 07:58:00 PM
I was up the other night and ran into a pack of P38's.. and in observing the fight from on high for a few moments was able to decipher who was flying two of 'em... Zigrat and Bug322. The one I had pegged as Zig nailed me on the first turn.. (yup, Zig alright) and I returned to the distant fight with a p51D (having been in that atrocious B thing the previous sortie) To find only one P38 and a 109. I made a fast pass on the p38 and watched the evasive.. "Bug" I sez to myself, and I swap over onto the 109. One turn later I sez "ahhh. Zigrat."  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Seems I can do this with other guys too... Udie and Hblair are quick to spot.. tho sometimes I mistake Berserker fer Udie when it gets hot and hairy. Hazed flies a lot like Udie too but he don't do the flick roll the same way. The rythm is diffrent...

Now, it's nothin in particular I can define... but do you guys sometimes get into a fight and on the second or third turn KNOW who it is from the way he flys??

Have we been doin this too long?? LOL!

Absolutely.  Usually I can tell on the very first turn who it is, and if not that, I can at least judge skill level fairly accurately.

While I rarely can tell who a particular plane is based soley on how it is being flown, I certainly can very quickly tell if the person is novice, expert, or oh crap I hope I can extend away.

One thing you learn very quickly (or you die a lot), is to be very warey of lesser planes.  While everyone uses the easy to fly planes, when you see a plane with a more restrictive flight envelope, you'd better watch your arse.  There arn't many novice or marginal pilots flying around in P47s or Yak9s.  Its not that the planes are bad, its just they require a more disciplined pilot who knows how to use them.

Cant' really ID the bad guy, but I quickly know if he knows what he's doing.

As a classic example, if u attack a guy dead 6 and he does a spilt S, then I know it's probably not a Top Ace.

if I see a good pony pilot I will think of the TAS (sry Hangtime, never dogfighted you yet). If I run in a P38 I will think of TAC, a 109 I will think to the famous LWs guys (too many to name, but HB/Santa/Regurge/Grunhtz/blablah).

When I was fighting HB/grunhertz, I could guess who I was chasing to their evasives. I think they could tell the same between Nomde or me.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, I'm pretty easy to ID, I'm the D30, I may have other P47-D25s (soon D11s) around me.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) Gotta love the dedicated plane squadrons, wohoo! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Frenchy is very easy to spot.  He thinks that overgrown behemoth of his is some kind of fighter plane.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

And I can spot Manedew from 5.0k.  Just look for the helicopter.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Only guy I can spot for sure is Hang in his 51D - he does this interesting negative-G zoom climb, and generally makes his 51 maneuver like a Zero and shot like a chog.
He even flies a B26 like a fighter.

While I was flying as Ametz there were several people who recognized my style in the 190  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif). I'm the one whole extend away from a good TnB (Spit, Nik, whatever) after a hairy engagment, getting out by the skin of the teeth, nothing left...and then reengage like a dumb bellybutton  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Oh and in my feeble brain I consider my particular evasive technique a bit of a give away.

I can usually pick kbman and spivey (chog dweebs) out of a crowd. Wardog and manedew (tiffie dweebs). Spatula and hangtime (pony dweebs). Blkhammer (yak dweeb). And ALL of the Night Hawk Squad (10k bish Lanc dweebs   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)). Oh and Animal (p38 dead meat dweeb).

Was flying along in a Spit IX one fine day and spotted a slightly higher P-51.  I acted like I did not notice and once the P-51 past my LOS from a front view I watched it wing over and slightly dive.  I lost it below my starboard side and knew the P-51 would climb up underneath about on my 7 o'clock. I began a slight turn to the right and picked up the P-51 comming on strong and fast. I waited until about D1.6 - 1.7 and tightened my turn to evade. Well instead of opening the area and getting some alt this P-51 starts turning with me!  Huh?  Oh, this guy is toast!!

In the initial part of the turning this P-51 is gaining on me in the turn!!  What!?!?  I'm getting scared but the 51 just can't seem to get the angle. Now I start gaining.  Before this 51 loses too much "E" in the turning, it bugs out!!  Starts a shallow dive and I'm left in the dust!  Well, well, well!  Let me go on a hunch,

Over channel 1, "P-51 turning with Spit over A29, Hang is that you?"

Few seconds later, "Swager, how ya doing?"  It was Hang alright!  He went on to tell me there was not much use in him sticking around anymore. He actually apoligized.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I seen which way he went and I went the other way.  "See ya later, Hang".  No sense in pushing my luck!!  Cool.

I can tell if I am fighting a great stick vs. newbie but usually not enough to figure out exactly who is who anymore.  lack of stick time has made me rusty in this aspect.
The other day I was flying a g10.  Took off with DT and 100% fuel. Wanted some alt before I went truely hunting.  About 22k I dropped the tank and started burnin the main down.  woah 109 and almost co-alt.  Let's turn to it and see what happens.  After the initial merge I think this guy is good.   As we roll and duck and dodge each other I am starting to sweat.  My speed is getting lower as the fuel in the tank sloshes around.  This guy is slowly gainin angles on me.  Then it happened.. nose flicks just a bit.. stall .. ARGHHHH.  The fight lasted another couple of passes with SYSTEM:You have been killd  SYSTEM: Kill #1 by Hblair.
My hand hurt and was shaking.  I had sweat dripping from my forehead.  Was just a plain awesome fight.
Point was I could tell I wasn't flying against just any 109 I was fighting a damn good 109 stick for sure.  I guessed it was hblair by the middle of it but that was just gut feeling.(actually the way I have been flying lately I figured it could be a newbie and I just suck that bad anymore and was quite happy to be killed by hblair.  I figured I made it him work a bit for it  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) ).

Those that fly against me usually can tell who I am. Who was that dweeb that just turned perfectly infront of my sights!

Dweeb? Hell no rocket, that was a damn good fight. I was just fortunate you stalled, or it may have been a very different ending.

Thanks for the mentions fellas. Truth is, I'm not as sharp as I once was in H2H, But I'm working on it.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) It can be a bit of a handicap only flying one plane all the time, but when you do, it seems you build a reputation if you're a good pilot in it, Look what drex has done for the P47-d25. I'm just glad they're rook right now.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Yah know, I've had some absoultely superb and memorable fights with just about alla you guys that have posted here.. damn I love this sim, and the guys that fly it like they love flyin are what make this the most fun of all sims I've ever flown.

Swager.. I remember that encounter, and I also remember buggin out when it was certain you wern't gonna let me get inside.. A pony can turn with most anything till the 'e' is gone.. trick is in knowin when yer hittin the wall on the e slope. I remember thinkin "damn.. almost; no cigar. This guy's no fool.. he's gonna drag me outta e and then thouroughly pound 20 mike-mike up my bellybutton till I squeal.. time ta get outta dodge..." Nice flyin.. thought I had yah bagged too.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Spent a coupla hours last night in the dueling arena.. flyin that damn B.. and had a great time workin the scissors with AKnimitz and a few other guys. Hazed, thanks again hazed fer showing me that place, a nice place to go and work on techniques and try new ideas.

Probably the most remarkable fight I ever had was with DMF.. I had the advantage and the e states pegged, and he flew my bellybutton right into the ground. I think I was #8 in his kill streak that night... another sierra hotel stick with a crisp aggressive style was Nath.. that kid was some hot stuff to try and handle.

Had another wild encounter with Drill (I think it was Drill) when flyin a B26.. I was gettin swarmed.. had nailed two or three guys by FLYIN that big old buff like a fighter..  runnin from the nose to the tail; shootin at everything that got close when along come this F4, he got around front set up for a crossing frontal approach and as he came in range just blew my bellybutton outta the sky in little bits with a HVAR. LOL! (A5; beta terrain Drill??)

TOWD also put up some great fights in the days gone by.. what can you say about a guy that'll roar right past 3 easy kills just to get on the only pony in the fight? Yah gotta love it.. I do the same thing when I see a 109...   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I'd been outta the program about three weeks and logged on.. got to talkin with Rocket on chan 1.. and he saddled up a pony and overflew 3 or 4 enemy fields just to come tango with me..  we did some wild fancy dancing before it was over and I felt like sucha heel fer gettin lucky on a dweebish shot. <S!> Rocket!

Some guys have remarable evasives, others a tenacious way of doggedly prosecuting the fight, still others that play the 'chess game' of hight, alt, postion and angles so well it's scary, staying high in the 'e' band.. had a great fight with Ammo like that the other night; him in a jug workin that magic extend and reverse...

Seems like when I go looking for a good fight; by god I sure as hell don't seem to have a bit of trouble finding one. Salute ALL of yah, damn good show!

And thanks!

Hang
