Title: US residents: Whats your Labor day plans?
Post by: Ripsnort on August 30, 2002, 10:42:08 AM
Mine are pretty uneventful (We always do something the week-end before or after to avoid the crowds, thus camping last week-end)

Saturday is yard work, Sunday is Flight musuem with the kids (monthly thing, they have a neat kids program down there where they get to build something different)  and Monday is BBQ with in-laws, with discussions trying to solve the worlds problems...pretty uneventful.

Going to head to my dad's place, take my fiance' and her kid.  Head to the river for some kneeboarding after a morning of dove hunting.

MT, Creamo gave me the idea of marinating Brats in beer before the b-b-q'ing and man are they good. I've revised the marinade to include a bit of crushed garlic and red pepperb (just a bit) and I always use a GOOD amber or darker beer for the marinade. Come to think of it, this is the only good idea Creamo has ever had.

Saturday - 5k training run, light breakfast, some yard work, cold lunch, then Battle of Britain scenario for Aces High, then check the weather reports to see if surf will be up for Sunday.

Sunday -  5k training run, light breakfast, then either surf or wash the 4Runner and watch the tropical depression to see if the surf conditions improve for Monday.

Monday - Labor Day Prediction Run at local sporting goods chain store - whomever guesses their 5k time closest wins a watch.  Could be the only thing I win this year.  Followed by a surf trip if surf is up.

(No, this isn't me, but I wish the surf got this big in Florida).

that ain't surfin'.  You don't lay down to surf!

damn gulf of mexico.  Get rideable waves maybe 4 times a year.  ;)  (not that infrequent, but I like hyperbole.)  Haven't surfed since high school tho.

anyways, tomorrow is Virginia at FSU so that'll be an all day thing for me.  Sunday is recover time and watch the replay on Sunshine Network.  Monday is relaxation day.   I'll probably log onto AH at some point.  Might head over to a friend's house if he plans on grilling and I'll bring some of my homebrews over.  Might do some AI scripting for Neverwinter Nights.  Dunno really.

Everyone gets to leave 30 minutes early today!  But someone has to stay to cover the phones.  Guess who that someone is.  Yay.

mmmmmmmmm Bratwurst!

Grilled Bratwurst

6 Bratwursts
1 12 ounce can of beer
1 medium onion, chopped
6 peppercorns
6 hard rolls

In a large pot combine all ingredients except the rolls. Simmer for 20 minutes. Preheat grill. Remove bratwursts from pot and place on grill for about 10 minutes, turning occasionally. Grill until brown. If you sprinkle with water they will form a crispy skin. Serve on rolls with your favorite mustard.

OR (even easier):

12 bratwurst sausages
24 ounces beer (darker is better)
a disposable aluminum pan

Preheat grill and prepare for indirect grilling. Place aluminum pan over unheated part of grill. Pour beer into pan. Place sausages over the direct heat. The fire should be a medium heat. Close the lid and cook for about 10 minutes.

Turn bratwursts frequently.

When the bratwursts start to brown move them into the pan with the beer. When all the bratwursts are in the pan close the lid and cook for about 20 more minutes. Serve right out of the pan so that the sausages are hot and juicy.

Unfortunately, I'm painting the house and doing some roof work  :(

Might be able to squeeze in some AH between picnics.  :)

Dark beer is best in that one too.. don't forget to fish the chopped onions out and toss 'em on top of the brat & slather with good German mustard.  :D

Or,
12 Bratwurst sausages
Two cases of Beer
two friends
One funnel
a pack of smokes

Apply beer to self and friends using funnel. Get into football related argument. Knock over BBQ (which you forgot to light anyhow). Order Pizza.

Brother in law and his wife coming in tonight. BBQ steaks tomorrow. I might have to cook some of thos Brats! Sounds great.

Have any of you fellas ever tried serving a Whole Green Chile as a side to a steak. There very seasonal but the canned ones are pretty good. I like to refrigerate mine beforehand so they are chilled when I service. Try a bite of Whole Green Chile along with a bite of your steak next time.

On Sunday we are going to a friends house in Keller for a big fish fry. Spanky's daugther (from real life) is coming to...hehehe. She and her husband are friends. Spanky, although past on now, retired in Keller.

Adios!

Study, study and do some more studying. Maybe play a little AH as well. Got finals covering 53 credit hours of college starting on Tuesday morning. Then they will be followed up by a 4 hour oral exam covering all topics  of the 53 credit hours and a 3.5 day series of practical project exams. This is the mid point of the Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic course. When I get through by the end of September I should have my airframe certificate. Powerplant starts at the very end of September. Only 7 more months and 34 credit hours to go WOOHOO.

Mm..friends over for spare ribs.

Alabama style Spare Ribs--

Slow boil the ribs in 1) mixture of 4 cans of beer to 48 onces of water or 2) 24 onces of vinegar to 48 ounces of water for 1 hour. Start the grill in the meantime (I like charcoal) and you want the fire to be hot.  Place ribs on the grill for 4 minutes each side, adding prepared BBQ sauce before turning. Remove from grill and now, take a basting brush and add honey or honey/brown sugar mixture to ribs. Take a propane torch and just singe the ribs, causing the honey to give you a glaze to the ribs. Serve up!!

Sauce--

Pick your own, make your own. Mine is simple. I pick up a bottle of Kraft hickory smoke flavor.  Combine half bottle of sauce in bowl with 1/3 cup of brown sugar, teaspoon (or more for more pizaaz) crushed red pepper,  pinch of black pepper,  squirt of Charro's hot sauce (texas pete or franks red hot is also good), .25 cup of vinegar. mix well.

Dont forget the bread.

MMM good stuff.

Went to the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, Ca.
Absolutely awesome. They've got around 130 aircraft and seems a quarter of them are flyable. I took tons of pics and will post them after I get them sorted out.
Got to sit in the cockpit of a P51D as the owner was gracious enough to offer me the oportunity to take pics of the cockpit to compliment the exterior shots I was taking. This was my 4th visit in about 3 weeks.
I am one happy camper :)

OK, well if you feel the urge to visit again, I live about 30 miles from the POF.

That P-38 was originally housed at the March Field Museum. Its owner flew it there from Florida. I work across the street from March Air Base. While on one of my unauthorized smoke breaks (about 3 years ago, I have since quit) outside the building I heard a sound like no other.

I looked up and this P-38 was coming straight towards me. It did a hard 180 right over my head, and then went back to the field. I was looking around to share my excitement with someone, but I was alone. It was the same plane that is in your picture.

Hehe that's a cool story :)
I was passing the restoration shop/hangar and saw that the staff were working on an F-8F. Took a few pics then decided to go get other photos taken. As I was in the South 'Flyables' Hangar, I heard this engine starting up, then started ROARING. Had to go to the tarmac to check it out. It was that F-8F, man that was awesome. They were checking the engine and running it through various power settings (they had it chained down and the wheel chocks in place. After they were satisfied with the engine, they did a taxi test to check the brakes, etc.

How often do you go to the POF? Do you have a digital camera? I know I could make 20 more trips and still not have all the photos I want :)
I'll probably be heading down that area again the end of Oct - beg Nov as that is my nephew's b'day.
I'm posting my pics in the 'Screenshots and Images' section of this BBS.

Spent three days sitting under a tent in a parking lot in Matthews, North Carolina (outside Charlotte), helping my wife sell her jewelry (see www.foxfiredesigns.com (http://www.foxfiredesigns.com) for examples).  It ain't the most macho thing in the world to do, but (a) it'll hopefully get me outta working in a cubicle someday, and (b) we left with a niiiiice full cashbox. :)  God bless suburban wimmen!
