As mentioned in another thread, our UK Convention is to be held on the weekend of 26/27 October, at the Great Barr Hotel (http://www.thegreatbarrhotel.co.uk/) in Birmingham, UK.
There has been some sort of get-together in the UK every year since 1997, originally for Air Warrior pilots, but last year it covered Aces High too - in fact, as it turned out, it was a mainly AH event. This year, of course, it would be an Aces High Convention. We started out having relatively small "Summer Meets", but these have gradually got bigger to be more of a small Convention, with about 40 people attending. Hopefully, now that more of us are playing Aces High, these will continue to grow in the future.
These events, although small in comparison to the US equivalents, are always a lot of fun, and it would be great to see some new faces (as well as familiar ones, of course) there this year. You can expect an action-packed weekend with plenty of competitions, quizzes, Gala Dinner with a 'veteran' Guest Speaker (tba) etc, in great company... we are also planning on having a webcam, complete with a chat window for anyone who can't make it to see some of the action and maybe get to chat with someone there to get the latest news. :)
To whet your appetite, here are some links to reports and pictures from previous "Meets" and Conventions we have held over the last 5 years:

Hmmm, I was born in Birmingham...must be a sign. Of course it was in Alabama. GL with the con, hope I get to see some of my Euro-squadies there on that web-cam.

Flossy - is there a Con Lite or Con Express alternative? I'd like to meet everyone, have dinner, have a few beers and talk about AH. One evening (Saturday) would do me. I don't want to participate in any competitions. I don't want to make a weekend of it. And I don't want to spend £145.

Best idea is to email Trip to see what he can work out for you - steve@clara.net :)

for Euro/UK Pilots.... :) Or any others for that matter! :D
-
Flossy - did that, but got no reply.
Guess I won't be seeing you then.

Really? I know Trip gets loads of email, so he may have missed it. Maybe trying again with CON in capital letters in the subject might catch his eye. Otherwise, there should soon be a page for Registration (I hope!) so don't give up just yet! In fact I will enquire about Registration today and will post as soon as I hear anything. :)

Flossy, any advice on how to convince my wife that we want to go?
-
So she can meet all the other AH Wid..... er Wives/Girlfriends, of course! :D Actually, quite a few wives and girlfriends come to the Con and although they may not be interested in the game itself, they usually enjoy each others' company at least - I suspect maybe swapping stories of how much time their "other half"'s passion takes up in their lives, and how they cope with it (or attempt to control it.... ). They usually spend some time either shopping or visiting local places of interest at least once during the weekend. Good Luck - hope you manage to persuade her, MJ! ;)

I heard that David Coulthard was going to be the guest speaker?
Flossy, can you think of any one better to have. :) (Zeb watch out, DC is quick on the move)
ATC ;)

Beet1e, I asked Trip and he said he has replied to you, and that you are on the list of attendees. :) The Registration page should be up later this week.....

Flossy - no reply received. I've updated my profile to show my email address. I saw Hammy last night, and it sounds like he might like to do what I want to do about this con.

OK, will let Trip know and get him to email you again.I saw Hammy last night, and it sounds like he might like to do what I want to do about this con.
OK, if that's what you want..... it's a pretty good deal for 145 pounds though, including evening meal Friday night (usually curry by tradition ), breakfast, lunch and Gala Dinner on Saturday, breakfast and possibly even lunch on Sunday, as well as two nights accommodation. The only extra you would need to pay for would be anything you buy at the bar! :D Maybe the odd raffle ticket as well.... Last year there was also a continual supply of refreshments during the day, which I think will be the case this year too. Come on, make a weekend of it! Bring the wife/girlfriend/significant other - there'll be others there to keep them company - and have a great weekend of wall-to-wall Aces High! (no doubt a fair few playing things like EverQuest, WW2OL etc too.... ) Our Cons are always great fun, and you won't regret it! ;)
Oh yes, and we will probably have at least one WW2 vet to give a talk on the Saturday Evening after the Gala Dinner - it's always wonderful to meet these courageous gentlemen and let them try out AH later.... :)
