How feasible would it be for a terrorist to smuggle in a shoulder launched IR missle (stinger or russian equivalent) and shoot down an airliner full of passengers taking off from an airport? If the terrorist planned it right, the plane could crash into a city.

Very likely, this probably worries me the most. Though there is some debate as to what a Stinger/SA-7 class weapon would do to a modern airliner. I think it would be catastrophic especially at the most likely points of attack - takeoff and landing.

they probably could just buy one here instead of smugling it in. I doubt it would be too hard to find some nut with one for sale.
I know it wasn't the official report. but there was alot of I witness reports and speculation, that that may have been what happend to the plane that went down off the coast of NY a few years ago.

Or get a M2 Browning... worked great in WW2 :eek: good for more than one plane, cheaper, too...

Low-tech ways to down a low-flying plane on a known flightpass abound.
I would use a cluster of home-made 12 inch or bigger mortar tubes lobbing explosive-filled gas-tanks with propellant amount and fuse-length measured to achieve detonation next to the plane.
Alternatively a few dosen pounds of nails can be shot from each tube in a hope to get a few into the engines.
How about suddenly releasing a line of helium baloons tethered to something heavy by 2000-feet steel cables?
All such technologies made from materials commonly available in USA can be safely tested and calibrated even in low-populated areas of USA, let alone in some other country with exact specifications and ballistic settings tables passed here for manufacture.
P.S. Of course if I have a 12 inch tube and an explosive-filled gas-tank, why would I try to shoot a plane in the air - there are plenty of them right on the tarmack or other targets for that matter.

oh sure.. some rifle fire into the cockpit or tracers into the wing tanks.. (do jumbojets have self sealing tanks?) and you would bring one of those mothers down. Or you could go old school and fashon a ballista type launcher.. get close enough and launch a big mother steel pole into one of the engines.. maybe have it flaming too.. combine that with cheap sniper fire..
