Title: Celebrity Dweebs
Post by: midnight Target on September 13, 2002, 02:34:26 PM
I was watching the Science Channel, some show on computer gaming. Anyway, they did an interview with Michael Dorn (Warf) which through screen shots implies that he flew in AirWarrior, and that he is still a flight sim geek. He also happens to be a pilot and the owner of his own T-33.

Any other celebrity dweebs that we know of?

I think I remember hearing that he flew under the name "worf" in WB way back when.  I believe he almost came to the '97 con but got called at the last minute to go read some part or something.

That'd be cool if he was here too, but I'm sure he'd want to remain unknown so that dweebs like me wouldn't start talkin Klingon to him :D

I remember hearing a rumor that Robert Downy Jr. used to fly AW between bumps of coke.

Steven Spielberg flew in WB at least once every couple of weeks for at least 1 year. A good Friend of mine has done some work with him. Said good Friend also played WB 'back in the day'.

Spielberg is big into WW2 Aviation.

And, a million years ago (~ '84-'85 is when I saw him personally, I was still in H.S. at the time), you could often find Robin Williams with his Son at Pacificon at the Dunfey Hotel in San Mateo (I used to compete in ASL tournaments there). Apparently Williams and his Son were (are?) big into Napoleonic miniatures type wargaming.

read an article a few weeks ago that Robin Williams is a net junkie.  Plays games, chats, all that stuff.  Don't remember where I read the article, though, sorry.

Hell, hblair's a celebrity.  They know him well on that BMW board I hear.  ;)

oh I forgot to add.....

There were a few references in Star Trek Deep Space 9 to WW2 aviation.  One I remember seeing was either right at the begining or ending of an episode.  Dr. Bashir and Worf were going off duty and Bashir says "Battle of Brittain in 10 minutes Holodeck 4" or something like that.  I bet Worf flew LW iron :D

No, Worfs name in WB wasn't Worf. It was letters and numbers. Can you guess? :)

I've heard the thing about Broderick and E Van Halen too... VH I doubt, Broderick who knows.  I doubt ANY celebrity would give thier ID so we'll probably never know anyway.

Here's an odd thought,
Out of the vast number of "celebrities" there is probably roughly, or slightly higher, percentage of them who play online games, as "normal" people.

With the vast number of people most encounter IN online games, the odds of not having run into one of them at one point are quite small.

So what happens when you realize that someone you've been flying with turns out to be *insert celebrities name*?

*queue twilight zone music*

Mark McKinney from Boys in the Hall and SNL flew AW3  at least occasionally (and maybe earlier) and showed up at one of the cons a few years ago.  dunno if he flies AH.

I'm Alan Ladd's evil clone.

and if i encountered a celeb  in game and they were a ganging lamer, why i'd call them exactly that!

He definitely flew WBs, he was either in Gryf's squad (The Rogue Gryffons) or possibly the FT's. I'm sure it was rekkof who told me, but it might have been Gryf (I think was flying with Gryf's squad at the time).

I remember reading somewhere that she has a masters degree. IMDB has this to say:

Quote
A member of Mensa with an IQ of 156.

Taught piano in japanese college by 16

Performed as pianist on stage in Carnage Hall while still a teenager. Self taught web master of her own web sites.

She is a member of MENSA, an international organization of about 100,000 highly intelligent people whose IQ's rank among the highest in their respective countries.

Used to attend Rutgers University in Newbrunswick, New Jersey, USA

Sounds geeky enough to me.

Michael Dorn's callsign in WB was f86c.  Dsgone worked on the set for DS9 and introduced Dorn to Warbirds.  Gunjam, Boa, and I went to the set a few times to hangout with them.  Pretty good time, nice folks.
