I'm curious. The few times I do encounter a pair of enemy fighters, they typically fly as a fighting wing. Often, this becomes more of a sort of double attack or loose deuce when a furball is encountered before degenerating to 1vMany with almost no mutual support.
Is anyone using strict section tactics or is everyone flying more or less seat of the pants?

Untill voice coms become the norm in AH ((and the way RW locks up in DX8 thats not anytime soon)), there is no effective way to communicate on the "fly" durring a fight.

For us, it depends on the sortie/mission type as to what types of 'rules' we set upon ourselves for any engagement. However, just as in real life, they can't be 'hard' rules since the battle environment is a fluid situation that requires you to make adjustments. So when we set up the rules for the mission, they tend to be 'recommendations' more then anything. The rest is really a matter of good communication.

It's totally random!
No Comms!
No tactics!
Strictly by seat of the pants!

Those P51D's bubble canopies must be getting a little on the tight side for you 13th TAS guys. Maybe you should retrofit the F8's canopies onto your Ponies... it might alleviate some of the pressure on your heads. <G>

While we don't fly any strict tactics, one of the strengths of the Pigs has always been fighting together. We have been flying together a long time, and we tend to just do it, without requiring much if any communication.
That's the beauty of a good squad. When you fight together long enough, you can be as efficient as if you were in constant communication, but in actuality you don't communicate much at all. When you just know what everybody is going to do you don't spend any of your attention on coms, and you can really kick ass. It always amazes me how the pigs can tear up the enemy when we fly together.
So pigs try to stick close, but we use pretty minimal coms and play it pretty loose. We've learned how to work with each other efficiently without constant coms, and it works really well. Oink!

Usually loose duece...I usually stay hi why my lead kills, then we switch. Maintaining real tight and strict section formations negates the numerical advantages somewhat IMO, though I think that you've gotta stay within 2k of ur wing at all times, but not necessarily follow him through all the manuevers like was the common way that all sides fought during wwii.
