Title: HTC, a plea for a "1.09 Arena" for CTD bug victims.
Post by: eskimo2 on September 15, 2002, 07:25:07 PM
Please!  I haven't been able to play for about 7 weeks, as have many others.
Could you make 1.09 available for download and dedicate one arena to accept AH version 1.09 only?
I guess it all comes down to numbers.  How many players are seriously affected by CTDs?  If its just a few dozen of us then I suppose that it wouldn't be worth it, but if there are hundreds of players who can't play 1.10, then don't we deserve a place to play?  I understand that there is no way that you can predict when you will find the bug, but from the looks of it, it could be a few more months.  Pretty soon, your going to have players getting past the flight sim withdrawal stage and discovering that there really is life without AH.

have you...

a) tried reinstalling dx8.1a (at a minimum)
b) reinstall the vid and/or joystick drivers (and then reinstalling dx8.1a
c) re-installing AH, then reinstalling DX8.1a (see a pattern here?)
d) deleting the vid.cfg file to let AH redetect your vid card

what's your system? your type of connection (and firewall/router)?

it's uncommon for problems to persist this long... and if it's many as you say, then there has to be somethin gin common with ya'll because AH is as jammed as ever.

a, b, & c.  Thinking about re-installing Windows.  Doing everything over from the ground up.  Others have reloaded Windows though and the problem still exists.

Athelon 1400 with a Geeforce 4? I think.  Road Runner Cable, no firewall or router.  (got a netgrear hub though)

As many others have stated, it's not our systems.  They run fine and no other programs cause CTDs.  AH 1.10 + patches causes CTDs on systems that ran fine on 1.09.  I think Hitech is still looking for the bug(s) and hasn't assumed that oodles of players coincidentally had systems become incompatable with AH with the release of 1.10.

This thread was not intended as a whine.  I just want to play and would be happy playing 1.09, even if it took 6 months to find the bug.

does the netgear hub have settings you can look at?  that might be a problem.

there's way too many people playing and the ctd whines have dropped down quite a bit after one of the last patches...

it has to be something unique to yours (and others') set ups...

oh... and in control panl under umm something...  have you tried turning down the sound acceleration?

Not sure... the hub came with no software, has worked fine well before 1.10 came out.

There are a lot of folks playing.  I think the bug in (its worst unplayable form) never afflicted the vast majority of players, so its hard to tell how many are out there...  Those who are afflicted, however, aren't whining because they are not playing, its not on their minds.  Even for a long time junkie like me, I don't even think "Maybe I'll play tonight" All I do is check the BB for a HTC patch post, no post, I don't even think about playing.  Just waiting somewhat patiently.  The only times that I have tried to fly has been after a patch, so whining about it isn't on my mind.  I'm sure others are the same.  I know some old timers who have even quit for good since 1.10 came out.

"it has to be something unique to yours (and others') set ups..."

That's what I think too.  But HTC hasn't formally gathered information on our puters, and hasn't officially recommended that we change specific hardware or reload software.  I think there still looking.
Heck, I'd even mail my system to HTC so they could dissect it if they wanted to look at a perfect CTD specimen system.

"oh... and in control panl under umm something... have you tried turning down the sound acceleration?"

Don't know about this... I'll take a look though.

Thanks Shane.

Only crash (CTD) I had this weekend was when the auto-updater finished it's download.    Once the install proceedure started I got a Ddhelp error message CTD. Patch still installed OK and after a reboot AH ran OK without any further incident.

SUPERFLY,
My new machine is dedicated to AH only and I don't have an Email account...  I guess I'll set one up for it so that I can send the films.

Thanks

Its a Microsoft Internet Keyboard, Model RT9410 V:56TW

Its got 10 extra little blue buttons, for web type stuff.  (never really looked at it/them)
At the hint that it may have something to do with CTDs, I'll swap it with the one on my old machine.

I swapped keyboards and still am getting CTDs right from the tower.  The first two in just a few seconds, next lasted a few minutes, fourth lasted about 1 minute.

Hitech, would you reccomend reloading Windows (ME)?
I also have Windows 98.  Does AH run better on either one?

CTD guys - make sure you run a good (ie. not a windows utility) memory checker.  I have a little one that creates a boot disk and checks all memory above about 74k using a number of different patterns.  I found a bad memory stick that didn't fail some basic tests but consistently failed other patterns like walking or alternating 1/0s.

Email me if you want it.  It's under 100k. eagle@flyingpigs.com
