My brother-in-law, architect, knows a man who owns apartments and is renting them. This man showed him the following letter (I'll try to translate as correctly as I can):
Dear Sir,
I am aware that I haven't paid the rent during the last 4 months. However, you have to understand that I am owing money to a lot of people and that you aren't alone in this situation. Be also assured that if I had the opportunity, I would happily and swiftly clear all my debts.
As my financial situation is far from good, I am currently unable to even pay a small amount of money to everyone each month. So I decided to use a kind of lottery system, drawing randomly every month 3 persons who I will pay or refund.
Hence, the fact that you haven't been paid during this last 4 month isn't the result of an ill will on my part but just a sheer lack of luck on your part. I sincerely wish you best luck in the future.

Lol thats the sytem I use when I dont have nuff money to pay all my bills. They all go into a hat and I draw them out untill I dont have any money left. When the bill collectors call I tell them that story and if they dont quit giving me crap they dont even go in the hat.:D

use the Married With Children bill paying 'alternative'...
put the Gas bill in the Electric bill envelope, and the Electric bill in the Cable bill envelope..
see the trend here...?

many years ago, I had a guy harrass me for some bill (one of those screwed up acounting things, I might have owed it, maybe not). anyway he started screaming and threatening me with legal crap.
so I told him "Look A-hole, I used to have a nasty gambling problem, and I've owed money to people way scarier than you. so shut the F up and get in line."
didn't hear from him again for a couple months.
btw- no I wouldn't have sent a letter like the one posted above, to the guy who decides wether or not I have a place to sleep.

Heh Mr Apathy, Landlords *cant* throw you out in this country, or it's a very long process. (impossible between Oct -> March anyway).

He's right, took me a year to throw out last tenant, at least this guy told him whats going on. i've heard alot of excuses, had 1 tenant who's mom died 4 times in 2 years.
Even been offer sex exchanged for payment. told her that she has to be better looking than mwife before i would even think fpor a second, she moved out right away thank god.

Yea, Im going through a tight spell right now too. Everything is on time, but there are a few old bills out there I found on my credit report I want to zap. Everytime I have enough to zap one or two on my credit report, my car goes hiccup or some damn thing comes up. Its quite maddening!
But, welcome to life :) Maybe someday I'll meet a rich girl! Heck, dual income would be great right now...but probably bring in 2x the bills! LOL

I think the question is "Are you stupid enough to write such a letter?"
By all means say this to your landlord on the phone. Never put anything like that in writing.
You never know when something like that will turn around and "bite you on the butt". Could be tomorrow...could be in ten years. When you write stuff like that you can NEVER take it back..and it ends up in the hands of someone who now thinks very little of you.

I have a good landlord opportunity...
I live in a 2 bedroom house, with 5 other houses just like mine all together on the same block. They are all renters, and recently our old landlord came around to tell us that the whole property was for sale.
Naturally, I was concerned, my wife is going to graduate from school in December, we just found out we are going to have a baby, and also at teh time we were talking about living on my income only (until my wife graduated). So I ask the old landlord if he knows what the new guy is planning. At that time, we had some options.
He said that the new guy was more interested in long term renters than making a quick buck, so he wasn't going to touch rent for at least a year. We figured we had it good, and we didn't dl any looking around or anything.
Of course, 5 days after teh sale goes through, we get this "Hi there, can't wait to meet all of you..., excited to get to know you..., if you need anything.... By the way, were raising your rent about 35%, and two of your neighbors are getting LA county eviction notices. Effective immediatley... Signed, Mr. Real Estate, Glendora CA."
Legally, he is within his rights, so there's nothing I can do, but it was heartless. Our neighbors had a kid the day they got their letter. I have sold a guitar that will pay the extra rent until we can move out in December. Everyone else in the community, all our neighbors, are moving out this month, if they haven't all ready.
I could send "Mr. Real Estate" a letter like the above in a second....
